.... it is whether or not the Air Force is going to decide to give you the boot at 15 years....

Yeah, my response was a little bogus.  The year after me is when they booted all those dudes with effectively zero warning.  That incident had to change the decision making math for a lot of guys.

I know several AFSOC mission hackers who then got passed over for O-5. Maybe AFSOC believes in primary job duties, but the promotion boards don't. I would not advise anyone to join AD until they've exhausted their options with the Reserves and Guard.

Geting passed over sucks, but I flew every assignment.  I asked myself if I'd rather retire an O5 who spent years on staff, or an O4 who didn't.   Surprisingly easy question to answer.

I might have been too harsh on Michael Bay a few months back.  This one actually looks like it could be a dark horse that wins at the box office come January...

    The latest trailer just released...

Huh.  When I watched the trailer I kept expecting a transformer to pop up somewhere.  Blackhawk Down this aint.

  4. Any advice for a 22 handgun.  Shot a Ruger III a few years back and loved it.  Heard it's a serious PITA to clean though.  Open to any recommendations?

Second question, how well does BX pricing compare to anyone who has done some price comparing recently?  Last time I checked was years ago in AK, and they weren't competitive.

  5. I have the 22 inch, got the light (plastic) frame. It's only a few pounds lighter than the metal one but difference is very noticeable.  I was commuting when I bought, which made the 22 in a better choice.  Now that I live in base I plan on upgrading to a 26 as soon as I can suck up the cost .  Far as the plastic, I doubt it will last as long as the metal frame, but a year later its holding up well.  If you plan on commuting long term, I'd lean towards metal.  You can tell who commutes and who lives in base by bag condition.  To Tonka, while the roller bags are easier to move around than a backpack, so far the durable bags I've found come with the tradeoff of being very heavy.  Which matters when slinging them in an overhead.  So I dont know if that'll solve your back problems.

I heard many stories like Huggy's, which is why I bought mine.  They hold up well and you can have them repaired/refurbed to like new at fairly reasonable prices when they do eventually get too banged up or torn.

Warrior, I looked at all the bags and decided I didn't really care where the pockets were, I didn't have that detailed a packing plan. I decided I wanted the light weight, bought the bag and made it work.  Far as 22 vs 26, the 22 fits in a standard overhead, which might matter if you commute.

  6. My viewpoint has merit because I have surperior experience. Furthermore, having been both a rated and non-rated officer, I have superior perspective. I don't dispute that COCOMs insist on having a rated officer in billits that don't require a rated officer. I take umbrage with your assertion that a rated officer is an inherently superior resource. That is an ignorant and short sighted opinion to hold.

I can't tell if you're serious. Umbrage? Seriously?

  7. Bud Day did ok

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2179136/ American Sniper

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1091191/?ref_=nv_sr_1Lone Survivor

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0462504/?ref_=nv_sr_1Rescue Dawn

I'm sorry...you were saying something about not using war experiences for profit?

Your point is valid of course. Though Id say with each of the examples you cited, those dudes did something worth writing about. And worth reading.

I personally wouldnt rank OGradys achievements quite up their with those others.

But, we all gotta pay the mortgage. I can think he acted like a db, he can laugh all the way to the bank.

  8. And that is why so many dislike him. He really bought into acting the war hero. The high point for me was when he stole the title of his memoir from Bud Day's.

You'll note the two dudes shot down during Allied Force kept much lower profiles.

  9. Probably better in wtf thread, but in middle of PCS to Ft Living Room and for no good reason decided to stay night at Scott AFB. Where a dank, nasty room cost $60/night. WTF?!?

Yeah, didnt go TDY much my last assignment. But when the hell did AF billleting lose their f'ing minds?

  10. Hitchens has several books on the subject. In any of them, I would argue strongly that his thesis is definitely that religion is idiotic, but not that all religious people, consequently, are morons. Im surprised thats what you took away from it. (1)

To your next point, I fail to see where Ive called anyone an idiot for their belief, and again, I'll highlight the double standard. Atheists are overwhelming labeled as such for their non-belief. As for proselytizing, again, I invite you to show me where Ive tried to convert anyone. Ive simply posted statistics and responded to questions. When's the last time an atheist knocked on your door or shouted at your kids in a public square? (2)

People instinctively get defensive when their core beliefs are challenged. I posted statistics, answered questions, and explained my ideas about the trend in religion in our country. All the hurt feelings and insecurity people are expressing now are their own baggage to deal with. (3)

    1. Ok, be surprised. Saying a belief system is idiotic kind of implies anyone holding it is an idiot.

    2. I didn't specifically address my post to you, but while you may or may not have called people idiots, your descriptions of their belief systems was somewhat contemptuous.

    3. I'm a nonbeliever. I just don't think that being a nonbeliever means one has to be an asshole. I have many friends who are deeply religious, they think I'm wrong and I think they're wrong. Sometimes we talk about it, but basically we respect each other. That said, I think you're giving yourself a little more credit than merited--you didn't come close to challenging anyone's core beliefs, you were just being a dick. And got a non unexpected response.

Hey, it's the internet, it happens. Have a good night.

  11. For a good look at religion, read "under the banner of heaven" to see religion at its finest.

It is a fantastic book. I'd qualify your statement by saying its a book about twisted wackjobs using religion to justify evil. But I agree, great book.

  12. I read a bit of Christopher Hitchens and enjoyed it for a variety of reasons, not least of which was that he was very humorous. However, at a certain point, I could summarize his thesis as religion is idiotic, and consequently all religious people are morons. My conflict was that I had (and have) many friends who are exceedingly well educated, very intelligent by any measure, and also devout. His thesis failed observationally.

I would suggest to you that calling people idiots for their beliefs is a poor way of convincing anyone of anything other than the fact that you're a prick. Just a thought.

If you've any familiarity with history, you'll know folks have been confidently predicting the end of religion for centuries. Perhaps it will happen this time, but perhaps historical perspective is worthy of consideration.

Final thought, what many people--including myself--find particularly annoying about the religious is the propensity of some to engage in unwanted aggressive proselytizing. Which, despite your apparent proud atheism, is exactly what you are doing

  13. I kind of hate it when people tell me how to spend my money. That said, I tend to agree with Huggy. Unless you are 100% positive you won't ever need it, you are closing a door that will be a lot harder to reopen.. There may be options later down the road, but I guarantee you they will be significantly more painful and/or expensive.

Delta for as long as I've been looking has only required a current written. I doubt many folks get hired without a full ATP, but clearly it's possible. Since your written is going to expire soon, that fact is irrelevant. I don't know of any major that will hire without the written, as I understand it (?) the written is the part that is about to get difficult.

I had no intention of going to the airlines....and here I am. Hell, even Butters is apparently going to give it a shot. If you're going to close that door, make sure you do it eyes open.

  14. By making his statements, Maj Gen Keltz could be seen as influencing every single member of the 19AF into believing that the accused is guilty. The defense would argue that this is "influence to reaching the findings of the case." If the defendent choses to take this to trial (not very likely), a UCI petition would be the first one filed from the defense.

Couldn't the prosecutor counter by saying "and then he got fired for it?" Proving it wasn't appropriate?

  15. Here's another plug for the Amex Platinum and Amex Delta Skymiles Platinum especially for those of you that are new hire airline pilots. Nothing beats waiting for your commute home then being able to go to the Skyclub for some free food and drinks before heading home, and it's sure better than the crew lounge. Since separating from AD both of my cards' fees have been waived, and I've still been receiving the companion tickets. I'll let you know if anything changes, but as far as I know, if you're still a reservist you still qualify for the fees being waived.

I like the way you think. Reading about the card it says to enter the lounge you need the platinum card, and ID and a ticket showing travel that day. What do you do for the ticket?

  16. Awesome of Jimmy!

When I was shot down in my AH-1 Cobra, (no ejection system or parachutes) I bought my self a Rolex in Hong Kong for $135! Biggest mistake was not buying a box car full of them considering today's prices!

    Wait, what? Story?
