  1. Hasn't been that long since I've been there, and yes, they do. My team lost a game once because this one freaking girl kept calling out the fact that my shoe laces weren't tucked in. Tucked 'em in, they fell out, "Point of order, his shoe laces are untucked!" FML...

Ah, so many memories. I had forgotten about the shoelace thing. The sad part about ROTC is that even potential aviators with the requisite highly calibrated bullshit detector have to play the game since ROTC is controlled by the shoeclerks and they are the keepers of the gates to UPT.

  2. This line:

It has calcified from the risk-taking organization it was in its youth into a rigid bureaucracy in which more emphasis is placed on process than it is on mission accomplishment.

really hit home with me. I'm just a ROTC puke, but that line pisses me off. During FT, we did a lot of time at the Leadership Reaction Course (might be familiar from SOS and ASBC for you AD guys that didn't do FT there)... anyways, it was made extremely clear that out of 100 points, mission accomplishment was only 3 points! I can't tell you how many times I heard "It's not mission accomplishment, it's the process you use".... copy, so as long as I followed the checklist, it doesn't matter if I make it back from my next long XC? Shit, next time I land in Key West, I'm just staying there... hey, I followed the checklist! I mean, don't get me wrong, I get that the idea was to get us into a process for solving problems, but how many people do you figure left FT brainwashed to believe that mission accomplishment < coloring within the lines? And how many of them are gonna end up in some squadron where they won't get slapped around for being dumb, and then they progress up the ranks and now... Mission Accomplishment does not matter if you didn't follow our path to get there.... :bash:

I'm young, and dumb, and you know the rest.... but still, from the bottom looking up, this kinda stuff doesn't seem right....

    //rant off

ROTC has always been a place to actively teach and instill shoeclerkery in potential officers at an early age, under the guise of buzz phrases like "attention to detail" etc. Do they still play the "sports" at FT where more emphasis is placed on rigid adherance to the rules and calling "point of order" on the other team's violations than on any kind of athletic prowess?

  3. I just bought a Sony DSC-TX1 point and shoot. After less than a month the touchscreen pooped out. After a very disappointing conversation with the Sony people where they basically told me to go fuck myself, I'm going to get a new point and shoot. Luckily the store I bought it at is going to return it for me. Does anyone have experience with the Leica D-Lux or C-Lux line. I am leaning that direction.

If you're looking for something around the size of the D-lux in a point and shoot, I just bought a Canon S90 and really like it. It has the same sensor as Canon's G11, but with a better lens in a much smaller and lighter body. It's pricey but still $300 cheaper than the D-Lux 4 and has very good image quality for a compact. It also has full manual controls and a programmable control ring on the front that makes changing common settings like aperture/shutter speed/ISO very quick and intuitive without having to dig through menu options.

Granted, the D-Lux 4 has HD video and a hot shoe, but neither of those are things I see myself needing in a compact camera.

For what it's worth, from what I've read the D-Lux 4 is basically a more expensive Panasonic LX-3 (which has a Leica lens), so you might look at those as well.

  4. You know the saddest thing on earth? When ABMs use that stuff.....

Yeah, I've known a couple of those guys. Interesting bunch. Something must happen to you when you put that ACC patch on.

    (edited for spelling)

  5. How long has this been going on, and how quick cna the ACLU jump on this and ban it is my question???

Some places have been doing it for a while. At Disney though, if an employee sees some huge dude in line who is obviously not going to fit on the ride, they're not allowed to tell them so. They have to let the person try to fit anyway and then send them away when they indeed don't fit.

  6. I was rocking the flight suit in local shopping stores on Christmas Eve and I would have told your to take a flying leap if you asked me WTF I thought I was doing. Some of us worked a half-day on Christmas Eve and then finished up last minute shopping. Don't assume you know his situation.

    2. I've rolled into Wal-Mart wearing the DFDU on the way home after a 24 hour duty day/10 day trip and would have been real pleased if someone came up to me and asked WTF.

  7. Airman: "We don't serve their kind here. Your droids, they'll have to wait outside until they find some reflective belts. Yes, I know he's gold and shiny as hell, but it's my commander's policy. If you don't leave now, I'll have some storm troopers arrest you."

  8. I'm with HD. Those of us geographically separated from the land of tucked t-shirt belt wearers are eager to hear the latest installment. Did they postpone the update or did the com nazi's cut off all access to Baseops?

I wouldn't be surprised if they did arbitrarily block sources of dissent, taking a page from the communist China playbook.

  9. Did your SQ furnish them?

Ours did. I don't really use it to do work when I'm TDY, but it's nice to be able to log in once every couple days to delete emails so i don't have to spend an hour of my workday after a 10 day trip to sort through my e-mail trying to find what's important. It's also nice not to ever have to remember my AFportal password anymore.

  10. I probably would have gone with the 32 bit version except I've read that a 32 bit OS will only recognize a maximum of 3GB of RAM.

FYI, if anyone has a valid .edu e-mail address, even from an online school like Touro, you can download Windows 7 Professional for $29 from here: Win 7 Pro student offer

The main page that comes up is for Office 07 Ultimate, but near the bottom of the page there's a section called "Other Student Deals From Microsoft" that has the link to Win 7.

  11. I have Win7 but not the CAC reader. Usually install problems I have can all be resolved by installing the software under a different compatibility option. Right-click install as...Vista or XP. Here is a link pertaining to your issue that someone else solved with this technique.

Edit: Also, 'Run As Administrator' may help.

I'll have to try that. I knew that Win 7 supposedly had some kind of compatability mode but I didn't know you could apply it to specific programs. I ended up getting it to work by having to manually install some of the certificates. The link on portal to download the reader software has a PDF attached to it now with instructions for installing on 64 bit operating systems.

So far, I'm impressed with Win 7. I've had a couple minor issues, but it seems pretty stable for an operating system that's only been released for a week.
