  1. ... I am now going to be doing a YEAR there rocking the glorified conex housing units.

I'd actually prefer conex housing units to the billeting at the Deid. Although, being there for a year you'll probably get to live in the "Better Person's Complex"

  2. I can, T Mobile works great abroad. Used throughout Europe, South America, and Qatar/UAE.

Good to know, especially since ATT's selection of subsidized Android phones just plain SUCKS. I guess it all depends on what kind of signal bands your phone supports.

  3. Which phones have sim cards? For the heavy drivers out there which company has the best international plan?

The only two GSM carriers in the US are ATT and T Mobile. GSM is the phone standard that uses SIM cards and is what most of the world uses. A quad-band GSM phone will get signal almost anywhere. AT&T seems to work pretty well overseas even though their domestic network sucks. Even without the international plan, you can receive texts for free if your domestic plan includes unlimited texting, and they are only 50 cents to send. It's a great way for people to contact me if they need to when I'm out God knows where without e-mail access. I can't vouch for T Mobile working well overseas, but my wife has it and I seems to get signal in a lot more countries than she does when we travel.

By the way, I would highly recommend any of the current generation of Android phones that have come out since January or so. I have a Nexus One and love it. Great alternative to iPhone if you're not a fan of the Apple walled garden. I bought my phone unlocked directly from Google so that AT&T can't try to charge me for the tethering/wifi hot spot feature when Android 2.2 is released.

  4. AMC '17s are hella busy right now, but the mission is great and you make a shit ton of money. I haven't owed taxes since 2007. My advice, OPS tempo changes all the time and could be totally different by the time you finish UPT and FTU, so take that for what it's worth when you make your choice. When we filled out our dream sheets, the word on the street from the C-17 world was still "you can fly as much or as little as you want to, copilots sometimes have to fight to get on trips". We all know how that's been working out lately, not that I would have chosen differently.

  5. Attention Airmen:

The CJCS is probably not the person to bitch to when the base education office denies your TA application for your underwater basket weaving class. I know he opened the floor for questions, but seriously, WTF?

  6. That's because the current Wing King kicks ass all around.

I freaking love Manas, especially with the fast internet in the dorm rooms now. It was a little weird last time I was there though, what with all the civilians and little kids running around the place.

  7. I understand that your calling attention to an existing poll on the internet, but the title "Rate the POTUS" on a military website is probably not a great idea. Its somewhat funny that it currently appears directly beneath the pinned topic "Fair warning on political posts."

I recommend a name change for this thread. Something more along the lines of "Internet Poll."

It's not a military web site, it's a site for military aviation enthusiasts, some of whom happen to be in the military.

  8. MNPS manual has specific instructions for contingencies while in MNPS airspace like what to do if you have to deviate for weather, can't maintain altitude, or have to turn around on the track. Good to review that stuff before every crossing. The AP2 also has some info extracted from the MNPS, like specific country procedures for obtaining your oceanic clearance. My condolences on not having SELCAL, by the way.

  9. With the fast wireless though they are installing a new proxy server to start blocking websites. As of right now it's wide open, but when they put in the proxy next week it's anyone's guess how restrictive they are going to make it.

True. If they block Skype it will defeat half the purpose. I'd be fine if they at least throttled the WOW servers a bit though.

  10. Anybody have any current gouge on living situation at the deid? I've been to Manas but will be going to Al Udeid in late spring. Can wireless internet be accessed from the rooms in the trailers? Still don't have to share rooms right? Anything else would be appreciated. Thanks.

There have been a few changes at the Deid over the last couple years. There's a new chow hall in the CC that's a lot nicer than the old one (it's an actual building as opposed to a large trailer situated over an open sewer pit). The Wi fi has been expanded, you can even pick it up in the transient tents now, but the quality of the connection varies. Don't know about picking it up in the trailers, it seems like you might need to string an external USB antenna outside your window for that to happen. Then, of course there's the lack of beer, but how long that will last is really anyone's guess.

  11. From the press release it doesn't sound like they plan to sue anyone for money, all it says is "we plan to take strong action to stop the ad containing this music". Since the AFR has already pulled the add, I would think the issue would be pretty much settled.

On a related note, I think White had a cameo as Elvis in "Walk Hard".

  12. Expect the first three months to be spin up time. After that, at most, I would expect one 10 day trip a month. You will see your place often so get something you will be happy coming home to.

I wouldn't count on the "at most one 10-day trip a month" thing. Might have been that way a couple years ago, but we've been flying our asses off out here this past year or so, new copilots especially since they don't have real jobs or upgrades to worry about.

  13. Is that for real or is AF Times just trying to stir up something? I just can't see the logic in wearing blues everyday. Especially since most of us would probably have to buy a few more sets of them.

Since when has unsound logic stopped the AF from making bad decisions?
