  1. Kingsman was a lot of fun. Well-made action movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. It was directed by the guy who made the first Kick-Ass, so the fight scenes are similar. The best scene is where Colin Firth straight up murders a church full of Westboro Baptist types.

  2. "MIF+1" is a dirty word at AETC HQ. This used to be the standard starting point for checkride grades, but was done away with some time ago, at least at CBM, because it violates the syllabus and CTS. As others have said, it doesn't matter at all how a stud at another base is graded, you are only ranked against your class, at your base, in your track. Work hard, study your ass off, and don't be a douchebag.

  3. I was BSing with another pilot in my unit this weekend and he mentioned that you might be able to fix some of this if you allowed UPT to count for an AAD. It's a year long "graduate" program with written tests and practical exams. I think it's a good idea.

Well, all these pilot AAD shenanighans are probably helping guard and airline recruiting. 45% seems crazy low for a pilot with SOS and no masters.

The shoes would never let it happen.

  4. Penn State has a good online program.

I was in AMC for seven years and had an Internet connection 99.69% of the time while on the road.

Sorry, this was in reference to the suggestion that I should drive to a brick and mortar school on the weekends.

  5. Disagree...Doha certainly isn't my first choice for cities (or weather for that matter) but shithole may be a little extreme. Anywhere with air conditioning and passable food and satellite TV and people driving Mercedes Benz SUVs does not qualify as a shithole in the grand scheme of the world. As an overseas PCS it's way behind Europe and Japan on my list but for a "deployed location" it's pretty freaking ok.

To each his own, I suppose. Like some others have said, it's not a bad place to go out for an afternoon to get to wear civilian clothes and eat some real food, but i'd never want to live there. The novelty of riding a camel and visiting a tacky, highly flamable mall would wear off quickly and be replaced with loathing for the homicidal drivers, endless dirty strip malls, and general filth. The airport is particularly disgusting. Even with an impoverished Pakistani cleaning the bathroom full time, you still manage to end up with a literal pool of shit on the floor. Definitely not saying the Deid is a worse place to deploy than Kandahar, Bagram, etc, but the city itself is one of the last places on earth i'd want to PCS.

  6. Don't confuse the base with the city. Doha isn't terrible, while Clovis is. There is a TON of stuff to do in Doha and a lot of fun to be had there. The reason that undisclosed location sucks so bad is 100% the fault of the Americans and their asine policies. All indications point to that base not going anywhere... ever. I have heard MANY different senior leaders express the desire to make it "The Ramstein of the middle east". With that said, I think we need as many spouses there as possible, because as this thread highlights, the "normalcy" of having spouses there runs counter to the idiocy of that base, and may actually go a long way to get the place changed for the better.

We must not have been to the same Doha. That place is an absolute shithole.

  7. Exactly.

I'm not talking about accidentally landing at an uncontrolled field, and I'm not talking about landing on a dirt strip in dirka-dirka stan. I'm talking about filing to and landing at an uncontrolled CONUS field - the subject of this thread.

CHS' aux field for assaults/touch and goes is uncontrolled. Also had to divert once to Stephenville Canada's old uncontrolled SAC strip when the whole east coast was socked in. Folks should be generally familiar with how to do it in case they ever have to

  8. I also wondered about that...

Wouldn't be surprised if they reported (what they thought) was the field in sight to approach, got handed off to MacDill tower and got cleared to land (at MacDill).

Biggest question in my mind is why, at any point prior to touchdown, neither pilot thought it was a bit odd that the primary runway at an AMC base looked a lot like an assault strip. (literally, nearly identical runway dimensions) I wonder if there were some extenuating factors (though I can't imagine what they might be)

  9. With so many of our aircraft having problems, this is backwards good news for the C-17.

Hell, after this, I'd believe the plane could do almost anything.

It's funny to watch the videos of the landing/takeoff and see how blown all these civilians' minds are that such a thing is possible. The runway at O. Knight is roughly the same dimensions of the assault strip at Altus. "How in the hell did he stop on that? There's no way they're getting that thing out of here!"

  10. Does Verizon offer internet down there as well? Maybe a home bundle type of thing?

    Cheers,

CableOne's internet is actually really fast. 50 Mbps advertised, and I've actually tested my connection at those speeds during non-peak hours. Their cable kind of sucks though, no on-demand channels. Some guys use Direct TV.

  11. Cell phone carrier:

    1) who do you use...good coverage? Reception on base / in your squadron?

    2) 3G / 4G?

    ETA: 19 days.

AT&T here: Around the populated areas of town I get pretty good signal and HSPA+ speeds, but when I get too far out from there it drops off quick. AT&T signal on base sucks. I get signal outside, but can barely get voice signal indoors, let alone data. Where I live off base (off of Holly Hills rd) I was getting about 1 bar inside my house if I was lucky, but I bought this thing called a microcell from AT&T and now I get 5 bars. It connects to your broadband internet and acts like a mini cell tower.

  12. Any intel on good places to eat in and around town? So far, I've tried Hank's BBQ and Proffit's Porch and both have been excellent. Looking to find some decent Mexican, Pizza, and Chinese. I tried the new Umi Japanese place and it was pretty good.

  13. Isn't Ambien/Dex regulated at a higher level (i.e, usage between you and the flight docs since it has to be approved by WG/CC or higher depending on the situation)?

Our Wing had a policy that before the doc would give you Ambien, you had to fill out a "please give me ambien" worksheet and get it signed by your DO

  14. Fuck me sideways....they wrote a 22 (that's right, 22) page CONOP (yes, they actualy put CONOP on the cover page) on playing CRUD!!

For their punishement, I am going to throat punch the first shoe I can find on Monday!

    Cheers,

    Cap-10

Was this thing written as a joke? Never been to an A/T A event, but I thought they were supposed to be pretty legit?
