  1. If you're legally allowed to dress up as an O-6 at an airshow and walk around asking people to do stuff...

This seems like impersonating an officer to me, which is already a crime.

I think that falsely stating a person was a war hero to gain personal fame, a different image, or just as some weird Facebook stunt should remain protected. The Supreme Court thought the same.

Thankfully, in a world of iPhones, web-enabled watches and Facebook-friendly widgets, society tends to correct these guys before the judicial system ever can.

  2. FIFY.

ok, I've met my quota for Nav jokes this quarter.

It could be worse... at least I'm tall enough to ride the six-flags rides.

Here are my favorite nav jokes:

"Never trust a WSO who doesn't wear glasses"

"What's the difference between a gay guy and a nav? The gay guy has a future in the Air Force"

"What do you call a nav who has been retired for five years? A GS-12."

"Why do we give leather jackets to navs? To better contain the smell."

  3. No, because Joe and Jane Citizen have no idea this douche is a faker. Just like the recent pretend Marine who some NBA player traded seats with on an airplane and tweeted about it.

My view is that lying through your teeth and being a faker F-tard should remain a protected form of expression.

Now that doesn't mean it shouldn't be called out and that the bastards shouldn't be "Martinized" ...just that it should be free of criminal penalty.

  4. I think this article is also a good show of how flawed the gun pod concept is. Much like the early F-4s, it's just no replacement for an internal gun. I'd say if they want to make the F-16 more useful as a CAS asset, a GAU-22 upgrade would be nice.

As a side note, I believe only the A model F-35 will have an internal gun. Not such a big deal for the Marines since they've had to make the external GAU-12 work on the Harrier, but I'm sure the Navy won't like dealing with pods on their C models.

It's also interesting to see how thoughts on the gun have changed. 45 years ago, we needed a gun to counter a highly maneuverable BFM adversary. These days, it's the danger-close weapon of choice.

  5. I already sent the guy I was working with at the FSDO an email with all the documents he looked at. Like I said, he didn't really understand the whole mil competency thing and it took quite a while to convince him that an E-8 is based on a B707.

You may want to just pay a DPE to do this for you. They'll charge, but you'll get this solved quickly. Consider the value of your time here... There are some guys who have specialized in turning your stack of Forms 8 and mil comp tests into appropriate pilot, flight instructor, and type ratings.

If you're in or TDY to Fort Walton Beach or Boston areas, I can recommend DPEs.

  6. What does your pilot certificate say right now? Does it say: Private privileges for Single-engine? If so, thats the reason. If not, re-engage.

Yep... To make that more clear, you have to have "Commercial Pilot ...Airplane Single Engine Land (or Sea)" on your pilot certificate before they'll put "Airplane Single Engine" on your flight instructor certificate.

Did you ever do the commercial mil comp?

  7. There are lots of people at the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and 60 Minutes that would love to hear these stories. If the IG doesn't work out... there are certainly other options.

Actually, I think this very forum and JQP have done a lot.

Simply having a publicly-facing vehicle to communicate and vent has been a great resource to commanders who are smart enough to harness its value.

As an example, I don't think there would have been some of the senior-level interventions during the Force Shaping fiasco had it not been for BO.net and JQP.

I don't think a Fogelsong can emerge as a MAJCOM/CC in an environment where blatant command buffoonery is now impossible to hide.

  8. Cool. The resolution wasn't good enough for me to count the stall fences. I'm thinking about abandoning my financial sanity and purchasing a MIG-21UM. The only way I could justify the cost were if I was able to secure a contract or two. Just starting to do the research. Thanks for the info.

I think the only work out there is contract red-air, but likely no growth there....

  9. Have you ever tried to manage a base club? Ever actually been involved and seen the budget breakdown on paper? It's a huge challenge just to keep some of these clubs open. Many of them have revenues in the negative--i.e. the Wg/CC has to figure out how to PAY to keep the club open. But yet people want and need the Clubs for retirements, promotion parties & ceremonies, dining in's, reunions, etc. And many people genuinely still long for the club to be a good/fun place to hang out, like it has been at various times in the past.

What's really wrong with the AF is that it takes at least MAJCOM approval to shut a club. Rather than figure out how to best provide air, space, and cyber power, WG/CCs are spending way too much time figuring out how to keep all the balls in the air when it simply isn't possible.

  10. Weird. Refusing to purchase a mess dress never occurred to me. I would have missed out on so much. The shenanigans at my own upt graduation was worth the $300 for my mess dress, not to mention the formal AF events at Nellis that rarely ended in boredom. Plus my wife digs me in it.

One of my favorite recurring AF moments is emptying the pockets of my mess dress when an event comes up and finding the booze that I stuffed in there from the last event. Then, prior to the event, I buy a bunch of hotel sampler booze bottles and the cycle repeats itself....

  11. ...Bowe concluded his e-mail with what, in another context, might read as a suicide note. "I am sorry for everything," he wrote. "The horror that is america is disgusting." Then he signed off with a final message to his mother and father. "There are a few more boxes coming to you guys," he said, referring to his uniform and books, which he had already packed up and shipped off. "Feel free to open them, and use them."

Perhaps a fourth possibility is that Bowe tried to commit suicide by Taliban, failed, and became a pawn instead.

  12. The FY2000 NDAA authorized changes to pay through the grade of O-6 and thru 25 years of aviation service. Additionally, it pushed the services to increase to $25k instead of only allowing it.

That's the problem: the $25K ACP limit was enacted now 15 years ago, and hasn't been updated since. At the same time, the DoD has been too busy trying to get other more important items into the NDAA that ACP gets lost every time.

I'm not sure if it's legal to peg ACP to CPI or some other inflationary measure.

  13. He didn't "milk" rated guys. As the article states, the word got out that $300 was the going rate. Guys were happy to pay it and he was happy to accept. If you didn't pay him, you still got your ticket. No one wanted to be the first person to test that technique, for fear he might stop doing the checkrides. When I flew with him, I didn't "tip" him until I already had my temp in hand, so the fee wasn't a requirement.

He got sentenced to 366 days in 2012, so I don't think he's still behind bars.

What do you call a government official accepting payment when he knows it's illegal to do so? Maybe "milking" isn't the right term. How about corruption? This is like the fire marshall taking a tip after a successful fire inspection on a new building....

  14. So now this is happening -

    http://www.dallasnews.com/business/business-headlines/20140523-spacex-ceo-suggests-rivals-hire-has-conflict.ece

While it's no tanker fiasco (what a wild ride that was) it's interesting.

It's a bunch of balderdash. Aerojet is never a prime... They're always just a sub.

...and to bring back the monopoly discussion... Aerojet is pretty much the only solid rocket motor maker in the US. Nobody ever mentions that (to include SpaceX).

  15. Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't $300/checkride a steal with regards to getting an FAA checkride from a designated examiner pilot? Back like 15 years ago, I paid $250 per checkride for my private and my instrument. I thought the standard was like $350 per checkride now.

This guy was a federal employee who should be giving check rides for free as part of his federal service. DPEs are sanctioned by the FAA to give check rides at a rate of their choosing. There are a few FAA GS types at each FSDO who can give check rides, and it's illegal for them to charge. Most mil dudes probably assumed he was a DPE vice a FAA guy and happily forked over $300.
