You completely missed the whole rest of the paragraph, where I (1) figured there was a more valid purpose for the missions Right Seat Driver described than simply taking the jet for an extended joy ride, and (2) even if they had gotten a good deal, it wasn't necessarily a bad thing, since they likely got good training from it. It's also funny that you mentioned there was a glut (not glutton) of copilots at the time, which might have justified long off-station missions, since I was the one who brought it up. 

           It seems you also missed the part when I highlighted "the lunacy of having USAFE, not AMC, own those tails." I personally think the current command construct for tankers in Europe is ridiculous; AMC should own the tankers in Europe, not USAFE. One of the bennies of this would be that tanker crews stateside would occasionally get to do something other than deploy to the desert, European-based crews might contribute more equitably to CENTCOM operations, and--probably most importantly--the pain would be spread more evenly than it currently is. But that would have required a bit more reading comprehension on your part.

    If you're gonna critique folks, at least bother to read what they wrote first. 

    Getting back to the topic of the thread, the KC-135 take rate is currently 32.1%--worse than C-130J, C-17, C-5 and mobility test communities. The only heavy communities with lower rates are KC-10 and C-130E/H, which are only marginally worse, at 30% and 31.3%, respectively. Based on these stats, I'd guess tanker crews aren't going on a whole lot of boondoggles these days. If they are, they sure aren't helping retention all that much.

    Your statement about EGUN not sharing equitably is dated by at least 4 years. EUCOM tanker crews are getting tasked at rates equal to or greater than their AMC counterparts, and they aren't good deals. Up until recently, 21 hour augmented duty day sorties to beautiful Africa were a daily occurrence.  Hell, we're even being augmented by the ANG/AFRC and AD to fill the lines.  Are there good deals?  Yes, but they are fewer and further between.

The most valuable experience I took away from my 2.5 years as a squadron and group exec was how to look after the people I supervise to help them succeed, which is something I wish I had gotten from my Flight Commanders when I was younger. I had the opportunity to go straight into a Flight Commander position immediately following my exec tours and took every opportunity to mentor my young Lts, NCOs, and Airmen, push them for opportunities to excel, and ensure their OPRs/EPRs/award packages were the best they could possibly be.

    This, IMO, is where the value is in being an exec. Not the strats.

  4. Had a '11 Ram 1500 4x4 Laramie before my OCONUS PCS. I can't sing it's praises enough. Not only did the 5.7L Hemi pack a powerful punch, but it rode like a car on the streets and, IMO, is the best looking truck on the market

  5. Another fantastic example of why the system is broken is the ribbon chart. Anyone familiar with these atrocities knows what I'm talking about. At my base, they are required for mid-level Captains and above and include basically a stoplight chart for: AAD, DE (corr), DE (res, DG), Flt/CC, Exec (level), Special programs (High Flight, PHOENIX, etc), MWS IP/EP, Staff, Etc, plus your last 3 OPR push lines. I've literally seen instances where the ribbon chart was the sole thing the CC used to push people for special programs, etc. While I understand that your record is what gets promoted, things like this take the lead out of leadership and only serve those higher-ups who don't know their people.

  6. Liquid sounds like a certain AMC higher-up who told a contingent of aviators asking about ops tempo relief and more time with their families after last year's super-surge to "Get out if this isn't what you want because there are plenty of people lining up to replace you"

  7. My class recently went through Aerospace Physiology. During the chamber ride, I had no issues on the ascent and descent to do the hypoxia demo, but upon final descent back to "ground level" I was having trouble equalizing my right ear. It became a bit painful but I did not say anything because 1)I could hear the ear equalizing slowly and 2)I didn't want to have to repeat the ride. After the chamber, my ear hurt for approx 10 minutes at which time it finally equalized. For the past week, I have had no pain whatsoever, but a slight muting of the sound in my right ear (not all the time) that I cannot seem to shake...sounds like it would if I were to have water stuck in there after swimming. At this point, a week later, it is minimal but still not completely gone. Is this something to be concerned about? I would prefer not to have to report it if this is something that will go away.

    *This is the first time I have experienced this problem

    North and East Aurora are the nicest and newest areas. There is a lot of new construction off of Buckley Ave, right by the base. Apartment costs are kinda high because the cost of living here is a bit higher (you can get a 1 or 2 bedroom, brand new complex, for around 600-900/mo). The base is right off of I-70 pretty much, so you can live pretty much anywhere in east Denver and be a short drive to the base. As far as your AFSC, im not sure. They have been changing things up since the base closings and have inherited a couple of squadrons from other bases. Can't help you there.

  9. Im a ROTC cadet here in Denver and let me tell you...you are coming to one of the most beautiful places in the country. Great weather, beautiful scenery, and a lot to do. Aurora is a nice area. There is a lot of newer housing and apartments around the Buckley area and you will be about a 15 min drive from downtown Denver and about a 15 minute drive from DIA. Let me know if you have any specific ?'s.

    Thanks for the replies and I agree. However, for some of you who dont think I should propose at all...why? Our relationship will be put through the same tests as an engaged couple as it would be without being engaged, except there is that commitment there. At this point, she is far too involved in school and her own career for me to uproot her from all of that and move down with me...that would be unfair to her. While I would like to get married right now instead of after UPT, it just isnt the right time. However, the ring will signify our commitment to eachother through this and we will most definately be married after UPT.

  11. I will be getting engaged to my girlfriend before I head off to UPT. However, she will not be able to move down with me for the first year because of her schooling, but will most likely move after the second phase of pilot training. We have talked about the sacrifices alot (seeing eachother once a month if i fly her down to TX from CO, no more talking on the phone 5 times a day, etc). We will be battling a long distance relationship for that first year and I was hoping to get some good advice for both her and I on keeping things going smoothly. I realize that I will not be able to go see her but maybe twice a year in CO, so i will have to fly her down to TX to see me as much as possible. Any advice is appreciated.
