  1. C'mon, no one here would be irresponsible enough to post the unit, wing, base and perhaps even a photo of the exact tail number, would they?!

I'm hoping the families receive notification before seeing it on social media, where it's spreading like wildfire.  Sincerest condolences.

Multiple news outlets are reporting those exact details, minus the tail number.

  2. F-16 pilot seems to have ejected safely, fingers crossed for survivors from the Cessna.

Air Force Fighter Jet Collided With Private Plane: FAA

An Air Force F-16 fighter jet and a Cessna private plane collided on Tuesday about 11 miles north of Charleston, South Carolina, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Defense officials told NBC News that reports indicate the military pilot safely ejected from the F-16 before it crashed.

The status of the Cessna or anyone aboard was not immediately known.

  3. Software Cut Off Fuel Supply In Stricken A400M

FRANKFURT and LONDON—The crash of an Airbus A400M airlifter that killed four people on May 9 may have been caused by new software that cut off the engine-fuel supply, industry sources have said.

    ...

Sources have told Aviation Week that aircraft MSN23, destined for Turkey, featured new software that would trim the fuel tanks, allowing the aircraft to fly certain military maneuvers.

  4. I don't doubt you are pissed. Unfortunately, in this life, you are not "owed" anything, and I believe that to be the basis of your anger.

Nobody thinks they are an underperformer; however, in the overage year groups and communities, we cut the bottom of the eligibles. Again, facts are facts. Don't get caught-up in the emotion of the right-sizing efforts or you will go insane.

Obviously, you are assuming I'm one of the people the Air Force cast aside...you know what happens when you assume?

  5. Curious...compared to our brothers and sisters in other services, our personnel system is a bright light. We have cut our requisite bottom 10% performers (which became only the bottom 2% or so, thanks to voluntary separations) and are not facing involuntary separations in 2015. If sequestration hits again, thanks to last year's VSP, we can get rid of a few more underperformers without extreme stress on the system, but we're anticipating that will not be required. We revamped the EPR. Our list of stressed career fields is remarkably low, and we have a plan to retain our critical RPA officers by offering more money. Trust me, we are the envy of the other three services. Have some pride in your AF leadership, particularly in A1, because we've made remarkable strides shaping the force for the 2020s.

Jesus, Chang. You're like my dog that keeps shitting on the kitchen floor and then looks at me like he has no idea why I'm so pissed. Again.

The Guard thanks you for cutting all those "underperformers." Many of them are finding homes where their hard work is actually valued.

  6. I don't care who you are, do NOT fuck with a HOA.

Chuck Yeager sued by California homeowners group

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —Chuck Yeager, the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound, is facing a very different type of challenge - this one in a California courtroom.

A homeowners association is suing the retired Air Force brigadier general and his wife, saying they owe about $28,000 in fees on two units they own in a town house complex in Sacramento.

The Sacramento Bee reports that the 90-year-old Yeager was in court Tuesday for the case, which has gone to trial.

The Yeagers' attorney, Michael Thomas, says their properties were never annexed to the association, Park River Oak Estates.

Yeager told the Bee he has seen more interesting cases, such as the time he presided over the court-martial of a colonel who was charged with strafing a Soviet ship.

  7. "Easy" is a relative term here. Units have to pay for you to go through initial qual in an aircraft. Switching to another MDS means the unit has to pay for another initial qual on you AND potentially pay for the initial qual for the guy who replaces you in your old airframe. You would have the benefit of being a known quantity within the wing, but other than that, there would have to be a good reason for them to want to spend a bunch of extra money on you. Why would a unit take a fully mission qualified pilot from one airframe and essentially start over with you in another airplane? I'm sure it happens, but it's not as easy as putting different patches on your bag.

  8. I hear you. When I flew I wore a baseball hat and a crew patch. I also knew when to take it off and so did my crew. As a Sq CC, we standardized our Friday patches, wearing a heritage patch, but we did not allow individual pencil pocket tabs outside the aircraft or TDY. I believe in the value of squadron morale patches and traditions, but squadron commanders need to be responsible for the content.

I've got no beef with that. But once again, though, if your automatic default position is that everyone will screw things up if you don't micromanage every aspect of our lives, then that's a problem. If we put people in command who earn their position and the respect of their followers through actual leadership, not just checking boxes, then situations like this won't come up:

As a group commander, I saw more and more instances of crews not getting the discretion part you described above. After an Afghanistan deployment, one of our crews arrived home to families and media, and the MAJCOM commander. Most of them stepped off the aircraft wearing their baseball hats, black fleece jackets, handlebar mustaches and chops to the jaw. They had 7 days to transition from the AOR to home station, but didn't. The MAJCOM CC and Wing CC looked at me and basically said, "WTF, why don't they know when to take that stuff off?" The argument from the crew and many in the squadron, including the sq cc was, if it is ok in combat, it is ok at home. Their lack of SA was startling.

During my time on active duty, I never saw a situation like that. That scenario, to me, seems like the exception not the rule. I'm in the Guard now, so I'm dealing with a whole different animal, but in my former life I can tell you I would have been very shocked to see that happen at any of the units I was in.

Wait...you fly eagles? I thought you were a herk driver.

    Touche.

  9. You naively think that broad "go do the right thing" guidance equals leadership.

I think it shows a profound lack of trust in your people if you automatically believe they won't do the right thing.

When I fly, I usually wear a baseball cap under my headset. Am I stupid enough to wear it outside of the airplane? Hell no. As soon as the squat switch in my ass opens up as I get out of my seat, the hat comes off. Shockingly, the hat even stays in my bag if I happen to have a VIP onboard. It's scary how smart I am sometimes.

When I was a young LT, I wore a subdued tab patch with a silhouette of a Herk. Most everyone else in the squadron wore some variation of that. I didn't have to be told not to wear a patch with a stripper on it, or even one with my school's logo. I knew damn well that if I did, I was going to get the stink eye from someone in the squadron, or worse yet from the DO or CC. I didn't need it written down, nor did anyone else. We had enough sense to know where the line was and policed ourselves in those rare instances when that line got crossed. SQ/CC's rarely, if ever, got involved, much less WG/CC's.

Put a little trust in your people, you might be surprised at how they respond.

  10. Another small victory. New change to AFI 36-2903:

Holy shit, I didn't believe you and had to go look for myself! E-9's worldwide must be seething with rage right now.

    SUMMARY OF CHANGES

    ...Changes eliminated athletic shoe color restrictions; authorized black socks with athletic shoes;

...deleted the requirement for reflective belts with the PT uniform (commander’s discretion remains).

  11. So I got a GoPro for Christmas this year and am really hoping to use it as a helmet cam in UPT. I have done some searching on YouTube to see what's out there and it looks like there are quite a few videos, but they all seem to be shot by the IP. Does anyone know what they likelihood of me being allowed to shot video, as a student in UPT, is? Thanks in advance.

Hell no. You need to worry about flying the airplane, not fucking around with a goddamn camera so you can impress Mary Jane Rottencrotch.
