  1. I understand the need to have official historical data. The folks at Maxwell are actually pretty easy to work with and seem to enjoy what they do. Call them at (334)953-2395 and tell them who you are what you are doing. They will help out.

As a side note, I stumbled on some info from one of our units C-130s. Rumor had it the aircraft was awarded two AF Crosses for a mission in Vietnam. I got in contact with the folks at Maxwell and they actually came up with the maintanence documents and the forward air controllers paperwork from Vietnam confirming the mission and the particular tail number. That is the kind of info they have at their disposal. If they can do that, they should easily connect the dots on your squadron's history for you.

  2. I would say that your unit is a descendant of the 20 TASS that last operated out of Shaw AFB, SC. I say this based on the info gathered from your units public website and the dates listed there. Your unit was originally named Detachment 8, 507th Tactical Air Control Wing. The 507th was at Shaw until 1991. The 20 TASS was one of two flying squadrons under the wing. The other was the 21 TASS. They flew the A-37 and later the OV-10. It would make sense that the AF would have kept the 20 TASS history alive by moving it to Ft Drum. I do not think it is just coincidence that both your unit as Det 8 and the 20 TASS were both under the 507th TACW. It is just my opinion. I hope that helps.

  3. I'm trying to do some research on the history of my squadron but I'm not having much luck. I've beeen to the AF Historical Research Agency (http://www.afhra.af.mil/) and of course Google, and it looks to me that perhaps my squadron was deactivated/reactivated in the Vietnam timeframe but I can't find much to confirm or deny.

You guys have any solid resources for AF history research? Brick, any advice?

    Square

Our unit has no money for a historian so it is one of my additional duties. I have a few contacts. Post the unit here or send me a PM.

  4. Who will you guys be training on the aircraft? Seems odd to give it to you guys unless a lot of others exist for you to upgrade people on. Or will yo be getting a new mission?

Rumor is OT & E first. Get our guys qualified and then train folks as their units receive them. Same mission though. Instructor school and intial/mission qual. Just on the AMP.

  5. Let me add some more buffoonery to this fire.

UCI at my guard base recently. The wing CC mandates "wear of reflective belts 24/7". This includes during hours of daylight, while indoors, while upstairs in a two story building, while driving your vehicle to and from the base, while at your hotel off base if you're not from the local area, if you are in civilian clothes on base. Hell to me 24/7 means 24/7 so if you're in the shower at home... better have a belt on. Fucking the wife? Better be wearing your belt!

The Wing CC also directed 1st Sgts to go to the local hotels and make sure his out of town traditionals were wearing the belt at the hotel "just in case an inspector sees them during their off duty time". Those caught without a belt on "will be severely reprimanded".

The gate guards were checking people as they entered the base to ensure they had on reflective belts in their car!

    - More -

All no hat/no salute areas on base were null and void during the UCI; this includes the ramp.

You could not address an airman or NCO as airman or sergeant. It had to be Airman First Class Snuffy or Technical Sergeant Beergut, etc.

The full time AGR and technicians were mandated to take down all personal items from their desks/offices. No pics of the kids or wife, etc.

The list goes on but I'm finding myself getting pissed off the more I type so I'm going to end there.

At a Guard base?????????????? How in the hell does this happen? You have to tell which unit.

  6. How does the point system work for a AAM? I will have a mix of combat support missions and combat missions at the end of this current deployment. I will not have 20 between them though. Can you use the 70% rule for the first AAM even if you already have an AM or two? I have searched with google and on this site but can not find what I am looking for and the unit I am deployed with does not have any idea. Thanks in advance.

  7. And it seems like even worse is said Capt stands a decent chance of getting reamed (sts) by a higher officer if he chooses to put a disrespecting E in their place. Maybe that applies more so to higher enlisted ranks, but geez, it's almost like there's no line between officer and enlisted. Might as well make everyone the same rank the way some people act.

And there is the problem. I have an interesting perspective on this decline of the line between officer and enlisted. I am a current TSgt but am also the son of a retired O-6. I am a 130 loadmaster and he was a 130 pilot. He speaks the language and gives me insight into real old school leadership. I can assure you he reads this thread and is absolutely disgusted with the current leadership overseas. The AF is headed down a real slippery slope with this type of buffoonery in the AOR. It is almost like there are two different Air Forces. One stateside and the other is this laughed at bunch of morons in the AOR. When do these Air Forces converge? When does it become the norm that Es start harassing Os stateside? Why should a MSgt respect a Capt stateside when he doesn't have to respect him in the AOR? We should also keep in mind the level of authority and influence that these MSgts have over 18 and 19 year old AMN who will eventually be the enlisted leaders of this AF. As an NCO, I ask of all of you officers out there... put these Es in their place. Take back this AF. I have no problem doing my part as a E.

Edit for drinking and posting... I leave for Bagram tomorrow.

  8. What is the accident rate for folks getting run over by a bus? Has the accident rate gone down since the introduction of the reflective belt? My point is that these things are not usefull at all. They aren't good for a damn thing except giving powerless shoe clerks more power than they need. I have a complete lack of confidence in senior officers. How are they so blind that they allow the basic officer/enlisted relationship to completely fall apart. MSgts grabbing LTs trays at chow halls? Really?

  9. Let me set this up. I am at LRAFB but in the Guard. There is a four way stop that seperates the Guard facilities from the active duty side. For those that are familiar with LRAFB it is the intersection where the RF-101 and RF-84 are located. There is a cop that sits a ways away but can still see folks that roll the stop signs at the intersection. By the time he catches up with folks driving to the ops building, they are already in a parking spot and getting out of the car. We have a two story building and love to watch all of this unfold. We have had a couple old crusty LTCs just keep walking away from the SF AMN. Late last week we had one of our command post ladies get pulled for rolling the stop sign. It was suggested that we all set off our car alarms using the panic buttons on our key chains. There must have been 30 car alarms going off all around that dude in his SF pickup. He had no idea what to do and looked like a complete idiot. Not 20 minutes after this we had a mass email from the Guard SF guys asking us to behave and follow the rules on the base. The AD had obviously called them. Not 30 minutes after that I went to lunch through the same intersection and there were no less than four AD SF cars waiting in various parking lots with two more having already pulled somebody else over. Just goes to show how much time they have on their hands....

  10. latest fun at BAF:

"Combat O (Combat Orientation - BAF's version of Right Start) is mandatory for all new arrivals, who will be remaining at Bagram. A Physical Fitness Assessment will be conducted at Combat O. Members must report in Physical Training Uniform (PTU) - no weapon, backpacks, IBA gear, or food allowed. This assessment is not an official physical fitness test, but will be recorded locally as part of the Commander's fitness program aimed at ensuring all Airmen are healthy and fit for the rigors of combat."

Really? I leave on the 30th of Oct for BAF. So I show up in the combat zone and do a fit test? I think I will fail on purpose.

  11. I find it interesting that in 2 pages of gay talk here on Baseops that there is barely any gay bashing like there has been in threads past. Why is that? Is it because he was a fellow aviator? He is a great poster boy for allowing gays into the military. What a great example. He is a combat proven aviator. He is well spoken. And according to him and a few people here his gayness went undetected for 18 years. I am not stupid enough to fall for this. Do people really think every gay person that is going to serve in the military is going to keep it hidden for 18 years if they do away with don't ask don't tell? Because in reality we are dealing with the military as a whole. When people speak of ruining good order, morale and discipline they are speaking of the average army dude hanging out in the barracks acting gay as gay gets. If you do away with don't ask don't tell you will be dealing with a flaming ###### who WILL ruin good order, morale and discipline. I am glad they found the perfect gay dude to be the poster boy for the liberal media who can put pressure on Obama and make him do right on his campaign promise of getting rid of the policy. Bottom line is gays do not belong in the military.

My last question is this. What behavior did he show to get turned in? If he did not say anything and the Air Force did not ask then how did anyone know?

  12. Amazing that when the B-52 first flew our F-86's were fighting over MiG Alley, and that the BUFF's (only slightly more recent models) are flying today with F-22's. B-52's have been flying for 25% of the time that the US has even been an independent country...

    Mike

Aviation is roughly 100 years old. The B-52 has been flying for half of that time.

  13. I am curious how much distance was between the pirate ship and the destroyer the SEALS were on. Must have been pretty tough for a sniper to get the shot with both boats moving on the water. They are bad mother ######ers no doubt. I am glad they are on our team.

  14. +3 That is why I always take my cooler full of beer prior to leaving home station...you never know where you will end up. Some of the best TDY times I have had have been drinking cans of cold beer on the back of the Herc.

  15. Well said in an earlier post. Rest in peace young warrior. These guys are not only elite warriors they are the most professional people I have ever dealt with bar none. Attached are two pics from a couple weeks ago while dropping at Creech AFB.
