We got the message from our wing commander today. The message across Air Force Space Command said the official uniform for AFSPC is ABUs, including on Mondays, effective 3 Dec 12
Back are the days of easily identifying folks in trouble/receiving awards/being promoted...and the hilarious sight of someone wearing blues for the first time in 20 pounds.

Despite the thick sarcasm that I've barely managed to get through I think i've learned a valuable lesson here (despite you-all's best effort). It's that glider time is in fact not respected or even considered real aviating by anyone in the USAF. I suppose this answers my question in a backwards kind of way. But, I'm still going to try it out if I get the chance since that dago on youtube made it look cool and at half the price of a powered aircraft!

You might have missed what people are getting at. Time spent behind the controls of an aircraft is great and can only help; you can also have a lot of fun in gliders. Just don't expect it to make you do well in UPT, or have the attitude that glider (or any flying) experience makes you any better than anyone else. Huggy mentioned that they are still using gliders at TPS, which is a pretty respected program in the Air Force. Don't be upset that everyone thinks the Italian kid in the glider is gay.

Interesting. If this is indeed the case then that makes glider's that much more relevant to my interests.
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure he's talking about losing the single engine on the F-16, thereby turning it into a glider...it's a joke.

In all honesty, that duty title from that LOE led to me being a squadron exec for a while and subsequently being put into the OG exec job. My wife and I have both received our #1 choice for our next assignment, thanks to the assistance of my former boss. Say what you want about exec'dom...it is what it is.
What I'm getting at is that I knew nothing as a 2d Lt at Columbus; I wouldn't have ever known or cared what my duty title was or that I could/should get credit for my work. There were some great folks working in the 14 OSS that took the time and effort to put me into that job, and make sure my work was documented and made it into my first OPR. I entered my first ops squadron with an LOE full of good bullets signed by the Squadron Commander. Most of my peers had an empty training report or two.
EDIT: This topic might seem ridiculous, but these kinds of questions are only going to get more common as long as the O-3 board buffoonery continues. While the answer might have been "who gives a shit, you're on casual" in the past, sadly that is no longer the case. Who would have ever thought that the casual job you are semi-randomly assigned might have an impact on whether or not you make Captain?

Upon retirement from the Air Force October 1st 1981 and completing college work for a BBA-Management degree under the Vietnam Veteran's G.I. Bill, at Kennesaw College (Now Kennesaw State University) in Marietta, GA I went to work flying and teaching the B-727 for Flight International, Inc. in Atlanta GA.
Fellow Marietta native and KSU graduate here. Got my PPL and instrument over at KRYY just after high school. Welcome to the board!

Ok, I think we have a bit of a consensus here.
1. There is no reason that Lts that have not even made it into the "real" Air Force, through no fault of their own, should be passed over for O-3. It is a waste of training/money, and a kick in the nuts to good people that signed up to serve their country.
2. That has got to change.
3. Lts can no longer just be Lts and supervisors at all levels need to be proactive in educating/mentoring them.
4. SOF guy is a douche.
Is that about it?

Thanks for the geography lesson. If you are looking at enough of the planet that you can see the entire curvature of the Earth, you are looking at more than New Mexico.

Ahh, someone that knows physics... very interesting.You are right, but at the moment the balloon/craft stopped ascending under power, it would begin falling and experience weightlessness. Any human "jumping" in space would be floating/falling/whatever.
Also, don't confuse weightlessness with zero gravity. There is definitely gravity in space.

Edit: Yes, the Air Force awards astronaut wings for reaching 50 miles, or 80 km. Felix was about 41 km short.

It's sad when you realize an energy drink has a better space program than your nation.
Not targeted towards you, but something that has been bothering me throughout this entire deal...HE DID NOT JUMP FROM SPACE. While what he did was incredibly impressive, he was not even halfway to even the lowest definition of where space begins. That's like saying you're stationed on the East Coast when in fact you're at Tinker.
If he jumped from space, you would have seen him floating in near-weightlessness, then his body would have burned up in the atmosphere.

Maybe a geeky question, but why is it that at the begining you can apparently see the entire curvature of the Earth, but there are no bodies of water present?
There isn't a lot of water near New Mexico.

It will be around the same time next year. There is only one board a year for active duty LAF Capt. Check the myPers website for 2013 promotion milestones. That will give you all the important dates for each board.

Completely agree. Like I said, this entire process is bullshit.
A couple more things for those out there that might be going up for a Capt board in the future. If you will have 120 days of supervision before the cutoff date, you need to request/demand a draft OPR. You can build a PRF using a draft OPR, as long as it will closeout before the cutoff. Also, any work you do on casual, get an LOE. You can use the bullets from your LOE on your first OPR (if you don't have better stuff to pull from) and more importantly, your training unit can put LOE bullets on your 475. Bullets from 475s can be used on PRFs just like an OPR.
This Capt board is forcing everyone to take the first couple of years a lot more seriously; you can help yourself by knowing what to ask for and what you are owed.

Which is a very high percentage as far as promotions go, even higher when you factor out the folks with QFIs. I worked the PRFs for all of our OG Lts this year, and the people that got passed over last year when they shouldn't have been got promoted APZ. The Lts that shouldn't have been promoted weren't.

Were you given a PRF signed by your Wing Commander? What was the overall recommendation? If it was a P, you should have had 5 lines of bullets. If it was a DP, you made Captain. Did you get an Officer Pre-Selection Brief (OPB) and verify that all of your info was correct?
Good luck to you guys, this is a shitty process that has hurt a lot of good people. In the worst-case scenario, if you don't get any resolution this year, you should be fine next year 1 APZ. I know that sucks, but your career isn't over.

Nothing 'goofy' about the Cirrus flight controls.
Flew the 22 with one of their traveling salesmen, and didn't notice my thumb resting on the hat switch on top of the stick. When I rotated, I realized that switch was the trim...
It was an ugly takeoff to say the least, but the flight was great. I was very impressed with the airplane. Although for that money, I'd still take a Lancair.

PRFs for the Capt board are blank for DPs. Ps and DNPs get 5 lines. If someone got a blank PRF that was a P, they got f'ed.

I thought AFSPC would be immune to all of this nonsense. Nope. My civilian co-worker had to take down his bumper sticker that says "VIRGIN" as it could be offensive to victims of assault or actual virgins I guess. That sucks to hear about what's going on everywhere else. I thought the historical class patches hanging in the 14 OG were really incredible pieces of history.
