  1. Hey guys, how many of you would let your spouses use your GI Bill? I'm pretty curious about this. So many of my friends don't have their GI Bill anymore because their wives all used them for school. Most of their wives who finished school already don't even work. I've been planning to save mine in case I get force shaped and I decide to go for a different line of work. At the base newcomer's brief I went to today, some ladies from the AF&RC were talking to my wife about working with them. My wife told them she has her Bachelors, but not her Masters and she doesn't want to take out loans for it. The girls immediately all told her that she can use my GI Bill to get it and that most of them had used their husbands' GI Bills. It just seems ludicrous to me to throw it away if they aren't going to make a career out of it. My wife and I both want her to be a stay at home mom when we have kids. She seems to be getting a lot of flak lately about not using my GI Bill. Does it make sense to let her use it?

    Thanks guys.

  2. Between him and the previous Little Rock WG/CC aka SOS Commander, they are producing some real winners.

I know exactly who you are talking about and I can't stand that guy. He looked a friend of mine dead in the eyes and said not to bother trying because navs have no place in his Air Force and if he has anything to do with us we will all be force shaped within a year (about two years ago). That guy is a piece of work. I knew someone that worked closely with him and he refused to admit anything was his fault. Everything that didn't turn out perfect had to be blamed on someone other than him. If that's the type of people that get promoted to general, I just don't know what to think anymore.

  3. Hey guys, does anyone know if BAH is prorated? For example, I am departing my current duty station on the 1st of x month. My BAH is much higher here than at my next base. I have 4 travel days to get there. Will my BAH for said month be at the higher rate for the entire month or will it get prorated to a certain amount of days and the rest be at the lower rate?

    Thanks for any help!

  4. "The Budget also requests authorization for another Base Realignment and Closure round in 2015 to close or realign excess infrastructure and avoid wasting limited resources maintaining unneeded facilities. The actual closing of any bases would involve a multiyear process that would not start until 2016, after the economy is projected to have more fully recovered."

It is too much to ask to put out a coherent message and information at this point; they honestly believe they are doing everyone a favor by releasing this matrix prior to the holidays.

The "funny" part is that everyone involved is working way too hard to get this done, while we have known for a long time it was going to happen. It's quite standard really, but I don't need to say that...do I?

The intent of the law is interpreted by the Air Force as an attempt to trim the force voluntarily first, they can target whom they please and deny whom they please. After that is "complete", they will non-voluntarily target the force...again, targeting whomever they please and removing whom they please.

He was asking for your opinion as the only "senior leader" he has any direct line too. If you don't want to be "called out", you should probably just go back to lurking. While I do not believe for a second that anyone should be looking for clarification from you (no one has any idea who you are or what you are qualified to answer), this is the situation you have developed. If you have the capacity to add value, you (and you alone) have added that obligation to yourself.

This, if you recall, is an all voluntary force. What you have just written is not true; we serve at our pleasure...for the values that we hold. This "usefulness" you speak of is purely political jargon for "I have no control over it". While I believe this viewpoint may have merit for O-6's and above, I am surprised you took the time to log in to write that. I suppose he did say, "Any comments?"...perhaps he should be more specific next time...or go ask someone that cares more.

That said, I hope you have a good Christmas...but, I hope everyone at A1 isn't taking Christmas off. I'm not (again, while I serve at other's pleasure).

Personally, I think you should try again...Perhaps with a little more value or empathy...your choice.

    Bendy

We absolutely do serve at the usefulness of our leaders. The only control we have over our jobs is to check the boxes and play the game. We are a number to our leaders and nothing more. I shudder every time I have to sit through a brief of some O-6 or O-7 telling us how each and every airman personally means the world to them and they would go to hell and back for every single one of us. That's funny considering how few of them take the time to even give a halfway respectful returned salute to a lieutenant.

Granted we all volunteer and continue to stay in the job through our own will, we have little control over how long our careers will be. Too much of the military is driven by politicians, not warrior generals.

  5. At the risk of reposting info...

We had a wing/cc call yesterday to address all the reduction programs for 2014. We were told a total cut of 25,000 personnel: roughly 20,000 enlisted and 5,000 officer (which sounds proportional...mebe). I don't know where to fact check this, but the cc mentioned that's a 7-8% reduction in force. Kaboom.

Other mentionables: cc's should be notified of their folks' eligibility 19 dec, and everyone notified of their eligibility on 20 dec. Eligibility = vsp, rif, early retirement, and a couple other programs I can't remember. All of these programs will run almost concurrently starting in January 2014, with board results for most programs out in June/July 2014.

Check your records to make sure you got credit for organizing the sq Christmas party.

    That's coming up so quickly.
  6. I made the claim already via DPS and the moving company hired an inspector to inspect the damages. The inspector made a report and sent it back to the moving company, who then made offers for the damages they caused. No one will give me a copy of the inspection report though, so I have no way of knowing if I am being offered a fair deal on the damages or if they are trying to screw me over. I would think the moving company would be obligated to give me a copy of the inspection, but so far no one will let me see the report.

  7. I can't find any information on this and my local TMO people haven't been of any help. Basically, the moving company destroyed quite a few things during my last move. They had an inspection company come out to do a claim inspection, then the moving company sent me an offer for the damages on DPS. I called the inspection company and asked for a copy of the results, but they said the inspection is confidential between the moving company and them. I then contacted the moving company and everyone I have talked to so far say that they need someone else's permission to send the report and that person isn't around. They also did not upload the inspection to DPS. Is there anything that says someone has to furnish me a copy of the report or that they have to upload it to DPS? I don't see what would keep them from getting a report that says repair would cost $2500, then offering $1000. Thanks guys.

  8. They are commissioned officers. Treat them with the proper customs and courtesies that they rate as such.

Don't be so short sighted and closed minded.

Thank you for the fail post. It was a question. Last i checked asking a question to clarify something is the exact opposite of short-sighted and closed-minded. GTFO.

And a real thank you to the actual answers.

  9. Is the Coast Guard still part of the actual military? I met a guy the other day who claimed to be a commander in the CG and got furious when I asked him about them being under the DHS and not DOD. He rambled on about how they are still military and blah blah. So do we actually salute higher ranking coasties? I'm not trying to insult the CG. There are a lot of organizations who are not military that do some tough work (CIA, DEA, FBI, etc). I'm just trying to figure out if they are still considered military and why. They protect the homeland, but they don't take the fight to the bad guys like the four main branches.

  10. Thanks guys. I appreciate the answers. I think I'm just going to hire a company to ship it down for me. It's worth the cost to have my wife ride with me for the traveling. I did look up the DLA and if I'm not mistaken I should get it for both PCS's since it is separate fiscal years for each PCS.

  11. How are you PCSing to Florida for just four months? That makes no sense.

    Do you mean TDY enroute?

The same way the AF PCS'd me to Little rock for 6 months before being PCS'd to North Carolina. It doesn't make sense, but they've been doing it. The answer I got when I asked to change it to a TDY enroute was "no, it's cheaper to PCS you".

If I drove one car and my wife drove the other, would we be able to claim mileage on both cars? Thanks for that link. I'll have to look into that.

  12. Hey guys, has anyone had to PCS with multiple cars? I am pcs'ing to Florida in a couple months and I have two cars. I will be there for about four months, then I'm PCS'ing to the West coast. I looked into the cost of shipping a car, but it would be about $1600 combined for both PCS's and I have no idea how trustworthy and safe shipping companies actually are. Has anyone found a good way to move cars around during PCS's and has anyone had experience using shipping companies to move their cars? Good, bad, and any scratches/extra miles on them? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

  13. Does anyone know a good place to buy them? I've been looking all over the internet and they are pretty expensive for the type I'm looking for. One of my buddies found a place that sells "imperfect" boxes for ridiculously cheap, but he can't remember the site anymore. He bought five of them and they all looked perfect.

  14. Curious - what happens to those that were passed over for Captain in FY12...Yes, that's right, passed over as a pilot for CAPTAIN. No problems with the law, DUIs, or negative paper work. I would normally be pinning on in September 2013, but since I was passed over I was waiting on this years board. There was a group of us who had blank PRFs submitted to the board last year (while deployed). Are we still pretty much SOL? Or will I receive an apology and a promotion, and pin on in Sept '13? Haha, yeah.....sure....

I was passed over as well as a nav with no issues either. We also had a pilot passed over with no problems. The non-select counselor said it was because we "didn't have a push for a leadership position on the PRF". When we told her that flyers don't have leadership positions as LT's, she said "well the other jobs do". I guess being a flight commander over three people as a 1Lt is more important that two years of undergrad and all the associated training to get us mission ready.

Anyway, I asked the question and I was told we are not getting back-promoted. We are rolling a year back into the 2010 year group. I haven't been able to get a straight answer on when we will pin on, but my best guess is 1 January. I'm still trying to find this out for sure. It was a horrible process to begin with and you know how Force Support is...there's one person who knows their job and I can't find him.

  15. Even if the opportunity to bail out presented itself, I'd still ride it in. My landings are better than my PLFs.

Landings at the wrong runway don't count.

    Sorry...saw the c-17 sig. Couldn't help myself.

The mentality that nothing could ever happen to make bailing out either viable, or preferable to riding it in, is usually just due to a lack of imagination.

In my community the notion of bailing out was laugable to many, particularly those whose crew stations are on the flight deck. It was a, "sure, give it the old college try, but you're just going to die halfway through the cargo compartment, as opposed to your crew station seat" kind of proposition. Granted it's not a heavy (AC-130), and is based on a platform that was designed to airdrop personnel and thus is configured to make exiting the aircraft in flight safe, but it was usually assumed that in any situation where you'd want to bail out the aircraft would be uncontrollable, dark, and for those who are familiar with the AC-130, full of obstructions in your way.

Then one day a crew found themselves over central Afghanistan (good luck finding a viable crash landing location) at a relatively low altitude (typical for the gunship) with a perfectly controllable aircraft that wasn't producing adequate thrust to maintain altitude. The crew was in the process of prepping for bailout when the issue was resolved, but had it not been, bailing out would have absolutely been the best option. Crash landing onto an 70% slope with a sheer cliff face at its end with no power isn't a highly survivable situation. I get that bailing out of a heavy is a much different proposition, but defending the stance that parachutes are worthless in a heavy is going to be a shitty one to have to own for the 5 minutes that you glide down to certain death when that one situation that you couldn't ever have imagined crops up.

The probability that they ever save a life being incredibly low, it's still easy insurance for a few hundred pounds.

I completely agree. The chances that we would ever use our chutes in the 130 community is extremely slim, but they're nice to have. For true heavies that fly much faster though, I'm not sure they are as useful.

  16. Hey guys, I'm looking into getting a tablet for some GA flying. I know there are a bunch of awesome apps, like Foreflight, for the Ipad, and I saw the post on here about the new Naviator app for the Android platforms. Most of everything I have seen has been positive for the apps, but do either of these really drive the purchase of a specific tablet? I will be primarily using it for private flying and that's my main reason for wanting to buy one. As of now, I'm looking at the Samsung Galaxy 2 Tablet and any of the various Ipads. Of course I want the new one with the retina display and a 64gb hard drive, but the price is pretty steep. Do you guys have any recommendations on which tablet to go with for this use?
