  1. From the Portal:

    Expiration of Leave Carryover Extension

Section 504 of the FY 2010 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) included a provision extending the maximum leave carryover of 75 days through 30 September 2013. The DoD Office of General Counsel has determined that members were authorized to carry forward up to 75 days from FY 2012 to FY 2013, but all leave in excess of 60 days as of 30 September 2013, will be lost on 1 October 2013 (FY 2014), barring any additional changes to the law or policy on the subject.

Members who carried forward a balance of 75 days on 1 October 2012, will be required to reduce their leave to a total of 60 days NLT 30 Sept 2013 in order to prevent loss of leave.

Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (OUSD) Personnel & Readiness (P&R) indicates it is pursuing a statutory extension to the maximum leave carryover, but it has not yet been passed.

Given that, I'd be on track to use 45 unless they do come back and pass something extending the date.

  2. The real funny thing is, we haven't yet seen the fighter/pilot/officer exodus promised by the frustrations in the 2009 letter. Sure, we know it prompted our next CSAF to take a look at the bro-level problems, but there sure hasn't yet been enough of a giant-sucking-sound (sts) of officers walking out the door to put a punctuation mark on either the 2009 or 2012 letters.

When's the actual date when the first 10-year-commitment guys start getting the chance to punch? I thought we were just now arriving there. Or has that been for a few months now?

  3. I just don't think they factored in a couple of bubbas openly refusing to fly the jet. The AF stood its ground on the issue, but that will just make it a more costly decision if we are unfortunate enough to have another mishap linked to OBOGS and hypoxia.

Exactly. Can you imagine what the fallout would be if a mishap related to this happens in the next few weeks? (knock on wood (sts) that it doesn't happen)

  4. Having sat in a few towers at various bases, I can say without a doubt that the best controllers I have ever seen were the guys at bagram - all civilians, all ex-military (I think). Controlling 3 C-130s in the pattern is one thing; controlling a C-130, a couple Antanovs, a handfull of Mi-8s, a 2 ship of strike eagles, and a Viper calling min fuel, and some retarded NORDO ISAF IL-76 on a 3 mile final to a closed runway - all with a cool, calm, professional voice - is quite another. Don't know what the hell goes on in Antarctica, but from what I've seen I couldn't disagreee more.

Huge freaking "2" on that one. Best controllers I've ever worked with. Plus there were a couple of 'em that weren't bad on the eyes, and that was not counting the deployment goggles.

  5. Has anyone received the "prove you were in a combat zone" letter from the IRS? It states "Please include a copy of your military orders showing your deployment dates for the combat zone or contingency operation." Do you think the DTS orders along with a paid travel voucher will be enough proof for the IRS?

Yup...I received one. Just sent a copy of all the military pay orders. Haven't heard back from them yet.
