  1. Since the topic of discussion here is "Approaches at UPT", I want to mention that the T-38C, while GPS equipped, does NOT fly GPS approaches. I'm not sure of what the T-6 has to offer, though.

Also realize that while apparently the C-17 has the ability to fly GPS approaches, none of the fighter aircraft that I know of have this capability. So, it's TACANs, VORs, ILSs, and GCI approaches for all my friends!

On the subject of GPS navigation two points:

One, from the "embracing technology" side of things, I don't see how navigating from place to place using GPS fixes is all that different from using radio NAVAIDs -- you still have to use similar procedures to proceed direct there (rather than homing).

Two, from the "old crusty guy" side of the house, I also agree that pilots need to equally understand how to navigate using radio NAVAIDs or INS systems instead of GPS. I can tell you from personal experience that the GPS signal in central Iraq during OIF was *trashed*, probably due to the GPS jammers that were deployed there. Did it effect operations? Not from where I was sitting, because we just flipped our nav systems over to INS and continued with what we were doing. Plus, there's that really handy "map reading" thing that worked out amazingly well.

In addition, all that stuff about how many satellites are guaranteed to be up at any time is nice...but...what about during wartime when we go against an enemy who can target our satellites? I can think of one potential adversary who has this capability and the intent to take down GPS satellites if the time comes.

Bottom line with that is we must not become completely reliant on GPS for navigation and targeting because it may not always be there for us.

Again, this part of the conversation is WAY off the topic of approaches at UPT but still a factor since that seems to be the way the discussion is going.

You can be RNAV without GNSS. You can be RNAV with INS only or even just NAVAIDs depending on how the system is certified. You need RNAV to proceed direct to a fix. You don’t need GNSS to do it.

The key concept is a system that allows you to navigate to a steer point without having to resort to the pencil method...and it must be one that is certified for the airspace in which it is used.
  2. I'm not defending the AF, but Congress had the biggest hand to play in the bonus. After all, Congress has had its eyes on the bonus for a while, and according to some discussion with A1 folks, the AF had to fight to even keep the paltry numbers programmed this year.

Yet doctors don’t have to fight for pro pay every year...

  3. My info was pre-2017 when Aero was being developed in-house at the NGA. It’s sad that the DoD paid $17M for that junk app when the ForeFlight+Jeppesen data contract for the entire DoD is several million less.

Aero is shit. The only thing it does decently is Giant Reports and that is only because the NGA intentionally cut ForeFlight out of getting Giant Reports from the NGA.

  4. If China wants Taiwan, China could get Taiwan. The question is what price are they willing to pay for it. Right now the price is too high.

Even with America out of the picture, the price might be too high.

I’d give Taiwan some self defense tools that keep that cost too high for China and trash the notion of US carrier fleets stopping the attack.

Eventually as China gains power, Taiwan might see more benefit in alliance with them than us anyhow.

How’s that working out for Hong Kong?

As someone who currently identifies as a pregnant female pilot, of course!

But seriously...yes, it is important for the same reason that it is important that my daughters can look at female astronauts, the Vice President, and other women in any career field and imagine themselves in that position.

  6. Well, we usually don’t redesign/make new uniforms if there isn’t a readiness issue.  Actually, scratch that—we mess with our uniforms all the time.
As to your earlier point about shaving changes...not going to happen anytime soon, at least not before I retire.  If it does, I’ll buy you a bottle of your choice at the Class Six.

Not sure how much time is on the clock but that does sound interesting.
  7. Well, since you’re thrashing about me not reading posts (which is fine, I don’t mind some thrash)—can you please answer this simple question that I keep posting:  What is the annual percentage is of flyers who wear a flight suit, who are pregnant, who are on flying status, and who cannot comfortably wear a flight suit to perform flying duties?  What is your guess?  I ask because this is the readiness question...yet Jazzdude is the only one who has even attempted to answer it, and he didn’t even answer the actual question...

Who gives a shit? It makes people’s lives better and should have happened a long time ago. C’mon, man. Go drink some Ensure.

  8. It takes 15 minutes to TERPS a GPS approach. It can all be done remotely by your MAJCOM. The only thing they cant do is test flight it, but guess what.... There's even waivers for that.

It doesn’t take much longer to TERPS a conventional approach either. It is also done remotely by the MAJCOM that “owns” that airfield (not your MAJCOM). They can’t and don’t flight check it which is why the Giant Reports ask for crews to do a flyability check. In fact, the most common reason why an approach never makes it into DoD FLIP after the MAJCOM does the review is publication requires a flyability check and no one ever does them.

Boy, I wish I knew something about FTIP reviews, procedure validation, US TERPS, PANS-OPS, MIPS, comparison reviews, accreditation, the DoD HN Accepted list, or any of this. Thanks for the lesson.

GPS approaches are easy to work with...until I shut off your access to GPS from the ground.

  9. Come to work to fly and try to do little else. If you aren't a complete dirt bag, and check your boxes, you will still make Lt Col and retire, making the same pay as everyone else.

In AMC, this advice will put you in the bottom 15% and you won’t make Lt Col.
  10. I got distracted earlier with how ridiculous the AF waiting until 2025 to fix this was, but what exactly is the database issue?

Probably non-compliant in some important way and the AF chose to ignore the problem at least 10 years ago instead of starting the fix then.

AMC pilots barely speak Area Navigation. The AF is at least 25 years behind except the KC-46 avionics. And many the GNS-430 or 530 in the UH-1.
  11. Yeah, but when I PCS I can get in and out of a Chevron in 5 minutes. I'll fill the tank and hit the restroom. Then clean the windows. Back on the road in 5 mins and that's with a Tundra. I don't have all day to be sitting at a supercharger. You can't avoid major traffic in cities if you have to account for having to supercharge during road trips.
Also, a trip in a Tesla is going to take far longer than any gas powered vehicle because you can't always charge along your route of travel. So you're basically wasting electricity to arrive at your final destination and traveling a longer distance.

Superchargers can put 200 miles in “the tank” in 15 minutes. The navigation app also knows where superchargers are and you can plan the stops...along major highways...in advance.

    You’re full of shit.
  12. Not all schools are closed. There are 50 states in the US. Each state is different. Some kids in Texas were going to school for awhile. They had an option to go in person or not.
I don't have kids. Whether they attend in person or login to virtual learning via VR or PS5 doesn't matter to me. Just posting links to info.

  13. I was a SIGINT Analyst at the NSA and at Osan before becoming a pilot. You're ranting about topics you don't fully understand.
There are somethings we let happen because we don't want to show our hand.

Keep talking about things that if you really were in those jobs you wouldn’t be talking about them. Tell us more!
