  1. good, being a reservist, I have a hard time believing my day job would be cool with me spending 8 weeks playing flickerball in Alabama....

BUT it teaches leadership and promotes tactical planning when your four man formation "attacks" the basket thru the aggressive lanes.....crap I might be getting that mixed up with the gayed up dodgeball game from ASBC......that was gayer than a fanny pack full of dicks....

  2. So, quick question for the guard/reserve guys...since ASBC/SOS have been combined and the AD acceptance rate for SOS is going from 75% up to 100% ..... would it be worth it for me (current AD 1Lt thats pinning on Capt in July 12) to do the correspondence still? I am sponsored by a unit for the June 2012 boards and assuming everything goes well there, I will be coming off AD in Aug 2012.

How do the Guard/Reserve guys view SOS correspondence vs in residence?

  3. Partied like a rockstar at a wedding this last weekend, and I was able to have some Sam Adams Utopias. For something that costs between $300-600 a bottle, I would have thought it would have tasted better. It was more along the lines of prune juice. I will stick to my Lonestar and Shiner.

I heard that stuff tastes like a bottle of smashed ass...

  4. ^^ Sorry man, no NAV spots unless you would want to compete for a pilot slot. Keep in mind, I didn't try to dig into too much detail, it was just stated to me that they aren't pulling the # of mid-level dudes (think IP's, AC's, etc) that they thought would come.

My guess is yeah, the airlines might of started hiring again, but last I heard, they aren't paying near the levels they used to pay for experienced AF pilots. I could be completely wrong on that but thats from talking to a few of my buddies who are AD pilots and have recently looked into going civilian.....

This unit also really prefers hiring for the long haul and internally so maybe there just aren't enough guys that they feel would stick with the unit for the long term.

  5. Toto: "A thought did cross my mind just now. Is it possible that the Reserve is bracing for a possible flood of AD officers who are planning to punch out once their commitment is done?"

Well, the unit I am trying to get picked up with is actually having the opposite problem. They were expecting more AD dudes to switch to the reserves and the guys just aren't coming off AD....

  6. So....I had my phone interview today. I have no clue how I did lol....on the other end of the line was pretty much all the leadership (SQ/CC, 5 Lt Col's, Maj, and their CMSgt). Needless to say, that was a bit intimidating. They are all laid back, awesome dudes but because of how bad I wanted this job, I was still freaking out internally..

I feel like I answered all the questions with confidence and clarity....except one...and that is what has me nervous...

Maybe its just me being too critical of myself but I feel like I blew the "million dollar question" which is "this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, why should we pick you"....

I knew this question would be asked so I had jotted down some buzzwords to try and kick start my memory. Running it back over in my head, I don't think it "flowed" like I was intending it to....

They all seemed very happy, excited with the rest of my answers, and overall very impressed with the rest of my info and my availability lines up with when they would need me. The commander seemed very pleased at the end so I really hope that one question didn't nail me...

For the dudes who have been on a board, how much do you hinge your decisions on a big question like that? If you are really impressed with the credentials, like the answers provided (I am assuming/hoping they liked my overall answers), would stumbling on one question cause you to hesitate?

The unit is a family unit, they like to hire for the long haul, and being a prior from their unit, I know they mean it...That's a HUGE reason why I want to fly with them. I guess I am just gonna be bat$#%& crazy until I know the answers one way or another lol....

  7. Another twist to consider. From my understanding, the reason the June board was so competitive was because they "pushed" alot of packages who were suppose to go to the previous September (consequently November) board.

Are they now allowing carry over from this June board to compete in the next board? If they aren't, and it was a one time thing to push the packages, then we can HOPE that it will go back to how it was in that the # of applicants that reached the board was very close to the # of allocated slots....

I don't see AFRC allowing what happened in June to be the norm. That would be wasting alot of unit's money, time, effort, and resources vs the old method.

Then again, from my 3 yrs as an officer on AD, I have learned that the common sense approach is usually the first thing stripped from the OPLAN....

  8. I believe that is old guidance. I know for a fact that LASIK is approved without restriction for AD and I'm 99% sure it's approved for both ANG and AFRC as well.

Again, might have changed but I just had PRK done March 2010 and I told them I was hoping to make it to UPT and they said that UPT is still only accepting PRK....not sure if they are correct or not but I didn't want to risk it so I went the PRK route..

Just an FYI for the guys looking at getting the procedure done by the AF, the surgeon will recommend the better procedure for you as an individual. 95% of the people I was down there with got PRK. You had to justify it to the surgeon himself if you wanted Lasik over his PRK recommendation and even then he didn't HAVE to perform the operation if he felt it wasn't going to be the best for you....at least thats what he told us lol...

  9. Something to consider is that if your FCI is done locally, you'll still need to go to Wright-Patt for the MFS portion of the exam (at least that's the current system). Getting the FCI out of the way earlier may help you meet certain board dates or give you peace of mind, but ultimately you won't be completely finished with the medical part until the MFS is completed. The other thing I'd caution you about is that getting all of the FCI done quickly at a local facility may be difficult. They don't do a lot of them and, thus, the process isn't always smooth and complete. But, it still may be the best way to go given the down time in the Brooks->WP transition.

If I have a FC1, approved by AETC, but have NOT done the MFS portion at WP am I still able to compete at the June 11 board or are they requiring people to have both their FC1 and MFS fully complete before accepting the packages?

  10. The difference this time around is that apparently all packets that meet the June board will have to be certified by AETC (or whomever)...that means going to brooks (or in this case WP), having the physical and getting the docs to sign off on your stuff (usually a week or two after the physical), and then having the physical approved by whatever command authority is required for the FC1 to be complete.

In my case, because I required a RS Waiver, I did the FC1 in late July and got final approval in mid October if I remember correctly.

YMMV. This is just rumors of course, so check with your recruiters.

hhmmmmm currently I am active duty and had my FC1 done at my base. I did have PRK and required a waiver. I have NOT gone to Brooks however I just got an email confirmation from our FC1 Cooridinator at my base that my FC1 and waiver was sent to AETC, certified, and returned. Does this mean I am good to go?
