  1. Hahaha... I bet you Ace'd your OPSEC CBT; however, PasserOGas failed.

    I passed, but then again I only remember a flurry of mouse clicks followed by a certificate.

    As for retention, a handful of guys in my unit are approaching their 10 years/retirement date and are going to punch. I'm on the fence. I loved my short time in the guard, but if this is going to be the new normal I'll probably be putting in my walking papers as well.

  2. So, the shortage seems to be here. Our unit just got tagged for a bunch of CENTCOM lines and only about 50% of our people are volunteering. It doesn't help that AD pulled all of our MPA and Alert leaving us with nothing to feed our bums on a regular basis. There are quite a few "F*ck the AD, make them mobilize me." protesters, along with newly hired airline dudes (congrats y'all!). Squadron leadership is now mulling individual mobilizations.

    My question is this. What are the legalities of mobilizing a guardsman? I thought they needed the Governor or the Congress to approve this. They are making it sound like the Wing/CC can do it. Where would you find the regulations covering this? I'm somewhat new to the guard, so sorry if I should know this.

  3. If my unit starts mobilizing dudes in order to non-vol them for 6 month tours they will lose about half their people. Guaranteed. As it is the sequester/budget shenanigans of late have driven most of our bums (the workhorses of the squadron) to seek outside employment. We are seeing many getting job offers, so it appears the hiring boom is slowly arriving. ARC/ANG leadership has enjoyed an over abundance of volunteer labor for the past decade due to the sorry state of the airline industry. That is changing rapidly and they are about to get a rude awakening. The next 5 years will be fun to watch.

    BTW I still love the guard, and am highly recommending it to my AD bros. AFRC, not so much.

  4. There are very few scenarios I can think of where a heavy crew would need parachutes and also have the time or ability to get to them. I doubt they would have helped these guys. The lack of any evidence of a fire on those pics would support the idea this jet was in pieces before it hit the ground.

    True, it probably wouldn't have helped these guys as they were stored in the tail. However, our seats were designed to store a 'chute and our plane has an egress system a-la the B-17. It worked in WWII. It would work now. If you were breaking apart in flight and had them on its possible you could get out.

    If something is causing tankers to come apart they won't ground us, leaving us with no options.

    McConnell jet. I have credible facebook rumors about where the crew was from but I'm not sharing them here. Parachutes removed as stated to "save fuel" (go f%ck yourself Gen Lichte). I'm gonna go find that dude standing on the tail and kick him in the balls. Flying tomorrow, guessing its going to be a quiet flight.

    I knew the one of the dudes that went down on the MC-12, now this. FML.

  6. The -46 WILL have the 787 cockpit. I'm not sure if that's enough to get the type though. I'm pretty sure you would need to be schooled up on all the systems and associated notes, warnings and cautions.

    As for the near collision, I know people who know people. It was not the tanker's fault, that's all I'll say. The tanker's autopilot kicked off after the reciever nosed over due to the rapid separation, that is what you saw. From what I understand the pushover was so violent that several backseaters were pretty badly injured, and the jet was grounded for some time afterwards.

    I'm a newly minted civilian thanks to the RIF and I had a question about the lifestyle of the ANG C-130 units out there. Obviously it varies by unit, but my understanding is that the reserve units deploy 6 on 6 off. Having just come off AD I have spent, what I feel, is plenty of time in the middle east. Thus I'm not really looking to go back to a 1:1 dwell. Are the ANG units doing this sort of thing? I don't mind going to the sandpit, I just don't want to live there. So what are the trips like, and how long are the activations (on average)?

  8. KC-135s at Mildenhall is the best kept tanker secret.

    Supposedly USAFE pussed out and let AMC take the tankers there away. So now Mildenhall will be an AMC detachment. :vomit: We shall see how long it takes for that good deal to be screwed up, but you can trust that it WILL happen.

    Kadena and Hickam are still safe bets, as PACAF told AMC to pound sand when they asked. Times are tough, and the good deals in the tanker are all slowly being killed off.

    My own ops tempo? 300 days this last year TDY with 280 of that deployed. Oh yeah, and we are supposedly "overmanned" on IP's. God I hate the Air Force. :banghead:

  9. If you go with this antennae you may have to get creative with the placement in order to get a signal. I ended up taping mine outside to the AC unit...I hope it stands up to the heat/humidity.

    Be careful there, CE loves to come around and yank those off. I put mine against the glass of the window. Putting wi-fi antennas up on the AC housing is not allowed. I guess it ruins the "ambiance" they are going for.

  10. I too will be spending my summer at OTBH. Just curious if anybody had use one of the wireless range extenders and if it was worth the money/if it worked at all.

    Get one. As long as it is in your room and not on a pole outside it's legal. I have a ubiquiti nanostation2 (google it), and it works great. No bars to 4 bars and skype in the room.

    You officers need to beat this shit down with a bat. I understand not all of you have leadership/management that has your back... but every time you just walk away from an O vs. E confrontation because "the boss will jump in my ass for jumping in the ass of the A1C who blatantly disrespected me in public", you are telling every enlisted person within earshot that they can continue to get away with disrespecting (and even disobeying) a commissioned officer. That is piss-poor leadership, and you don't need to wear your rank on your collar to be able to figure that out.

    I agree, and have done so multiple times. We had a SSgt disrespect my Co for wearing his sunglasses on his head two days before this. The Co was "wrong" but the SSgt's tone was what I pulled him aside for. This time I was right and had 2 people in my face saying I wasn't, and something in me just snapped. That's bad officership on my part for sure, which I knew, which made me even more angry. The fact that another Capt was there, probably her direct boss smirking at me made me think about how I couldn't possibly win this one.

    I never thought about waiting for the Wing/CC because, lets face it, this place has been run on fear of the Wing/CC and his cronies for the most part of 9 years now. Maybe that's changed but I never got the memo. Besides, if it didn't work out in my favor, and my Sq/CC got an e-mail from the Boss... Sq/CC-> :bohica:<-ME

    Not worth it for a stupid briefing. Maybe I'm just chicken$7it.

  12. I'd like to hear what the chief had to say to your co, since I'm pretty sure your co was an officer. And YOU should have gone and had a discussion with the A1C regarding her tone if you thought she was offensive. The reason shoes are so powerful is because they're allowed to be-- don't ever forget that. Yes you have to follow their rules, seeing as how our leadership has bought into their bullshit, but that still doesn't mean they can be disrespectful in enforcing them, including shoes that outrank you. The ROE "should" be that if you outrank the shithead shoe, you correct the issue on the spot. If the shoe outranks you, you remain calm and polite, gather identifying information, and pass it either up your chain or over to the shoe's chain, as appropriate. Even if you are in violation of the rules, professional respect still applies, even if some people think it doesn't.

    I was so angry at the time. I didn't walk out because I was "run off". I walked because after 64 days and 9+ deployments here I just lost it. As we were walking I was telling my Co "I should have told her that was inapropriate, but I probably would have been screaming it." Which is what inspired him to go back. Bad form on my part, but I'm about the least angry person I know so when I do get legitimately pissed, I get REALLY pissed so I think what I did was about as professional as I could be at that moment.

    He didn't get in trouble but he had a discussion with her, and she ran and grabbed the nearest SNCO and that slimey shoe Captain and then let them run interference on him. I kind of knew that would happen, standard ops out here. No e-mail to the boss was sent... yet.

  13. So I've got a funny story... My crew is coming up on redeployment time and we need to get "right finish" done. Of course our ops is too busy to schedule us for it so we have to "make time" during crew rest to get it done.

    The schedule at the CC theater says 17:00 on Friday and we're free, so I gather my crew and we all head over to get this stupid thing done. We show up at 16:55, because you know if your not 5 min early... Well, the Wing/CC had shown up early and started briefing already, so we waited in the lobby. One of the shoes in charge of that joke of an operation comes out to inform us that we will not be allowed in because we are "late". I informed her of the time and she came back with "it's universaly known that you must be in seats 15 min early, so you are, in fact, 10 min late." To which I reply "If you want us in our seats at 16:45 why not schedule it for 16:45?" "Sir, you are late and I'm going to tell your commander." The Mission Support Captain standing next to her is smirking at me. Fumeing mad I walk out immediately to avoid punching a girl. As I left I get a "3## EARS huh? Thank you!" a not so subtle threat from an A1C, to a Captain. Gosh they learn early now. :airman:

    The Co-Pilot got so angry on the way back to the room he went back to have it out with her (he's new and hasn't gotten the "full shoe" yet.) Needless to say, he was promply "chiefed" for about 5 minutes. We had a good laugh over it, then I took an Ambien and drank three beers hoping I would wake up in Germany post coma. No luck.

    Also, you might want to take a look at the number of pilots we spend millions to train who then sit behind a desk most of their careers. Also there is Al Udeid, I'd be happy to tell you how many college educations I've dumped out of my plane in jet fuel due to lazy/inept planning.... :banghead:

    On a side note, could you write a bill that waves my ADSC? Maybe attach it to next years defense budget? Just asking...

  15. That's surprising, I hear the market for former Navs is pretty good right now. I know of at least three Eastern Mongolian airlines that need navigators. :beer:

    I hear the C-17 will be getting navs, but they'll be called "gear position monitor".
