Seems like HAF finally realized pilots don't want to accept additional ADSCs.  Maybe now they'll apply that outlook to the bonus and we'll see increased compensation in the from of Professional Pay without huge ADSCs.  Here's hoping.

You know what they say about hoping

    ...but yes, let’s hope

  2. Anyone have any recent experience with the Brollagio pit pad?

Also wanted to ask if anyone (recent T-6 grads or especially pit instructors) would recommend spending time studying anything before arriving.  Or are you better off just waiting till you’re there?  I have the T-6 flying reg at work (forgetting the name at the moment) but haven’t dove too deep into it yet. I’ve read through this post and just looking for any pointers before heading that way. Any info is appreciated

"A degree of waste and inefficiency" is one thing.  Paying Lockheed ~$45M for a capability than can be had for ~$1M isn't "a degree of waste and inefficiency."  It's fraud, and it's obscene.

If we were actually concerned about keeping the defense-industrial base healthy, we'd be deploying those $1M sims, and using the $44M of savings on other things.  What military capabilities could we have added with that extra money?  How could we have expanded our industrial base, instead of just feeding the bloat at a few behemoths (Lockheed, Boeing, etc)?

If we're really concerned about keeping the defense industrial base healthy for a near-peer war, we would be a lot better off spreading the money around to different, smaller companies, rather than shoveling it all into Lockheed's cash furnace.

I hear you and don’t disagree. But the arguement is the model has worked for a long time. Not saying it’s perfect or right. Bottom line is keeping those “behemoths” strong has worked for the country since WWII. When things work in national defense for that long nobody in a position to change things is going to be quick to change the model

The sales pitch does not matter. Efficiency does not matter. This would make less money for the top defense contractors therefore it is not viable.

I worked in simulator research for a while when we created the first high fidelity simulator based on commercial off-the-shelf parts. We created a C-130 simulator that out-performed all existing variants. We created ours from scratch, in one year using active duty labor. Total cost (including the value of the labor) was under $1M. We were ordered to cease and desist. A group of SESs sat us down and explained that we cannot have this because it would hurt Lockheed who was selling sims for $45M per, and we needed Lockheed to be strong for overall defense.

    ^this

it rubs many the wrong way but realize all this is tied together. The DoD, the economy, defense manufactures, contractors. It’s all part of the same effort in the end. It doesn’t always make sense and certainly isn’t built/intended to be the most efficient. As crazy as it seems on the surface the SESs you spoke of are right. Doing something that could potentially hurt Lockheed isnt smart. It’s all tied together. It isn’t just the military alone that makes up the defense strategy. If ever we’re in a near-peer war the country would need not only the military but the entire defense industry functioning at its highest level. Defending the country means keeping that industry, in addition to the military, as strong as possible. The unfortunate part is it certainly creates a degree of waste and inefficiency in the meantime

Dude, it’s not about the ability to purchase with cash. This is about the decision to finance because it’s more financially sound to “make that money work for us” elsewhere. Live within your means...agree 100%. To say that people shouldn’t buy new cars or enjoy luxury items is asinine though...especially if they have the disposable income to do so.

I assume you don’t have a watercraft or airplane and subsequently assume you never will.

Have an extreme net worth doesn’t mean fvck all if you didn’t get to enjoy it along the way.

    ^exactly

Heard this debt argument before...it’s dumb. Absolutely nothing wrong with a car loan. Enjoy your life and do the things you want to do. Pay your bills on time. Stuff happens and things could be over tmrw. If other people don’t agree with what you do with your $$ tell them to eat a bag of dicks

What's the latest, best place, or best rate to get a new or used vehicle loan? Last time I did it, USAA matched a local credit union rate... but that was 5+ years ago.

I think you answered it. I’d start with credit unions then check with USAA. Credit unions are often where you’ll find the lower APR

And that's what I'm getting at.. there are folks that simply do not belong here.  Yet they wanted a shot so we waste time and resources on them.  From what I understand, AFSOC did't take people out of the pipeline initially but either manning of feelings drove that to change.  Now, we are not allowed to screen/interview or anything of the sort.

AFSOC is a huge MAJCOM vs a relatively small U-2 community. Especially when you consider the growth in AFSOC over the last 15 years. It’s simply way too big an operation to be selective like that. There are selective units out there but that’s a different animal

I'm with Linda.  Our Ops squadron is an FTU and burning precious hours (GT and flight) covering the basics.

It's systemic, and from what I read around here only going to get worse...

They have been taught the basics. If they retain it or not is another question. Don’t believe them every time they say, “I’ve never heard that before.”  I saw that excuse plenty as an FTU instructor when I absolutely knew they’d covered a particular topic previously. Retention is on the student

  9. This shouldn’t only get thrown on UPT outfits. Everyone gets a basic qual/instrument from their respective FTUs as well and should be getting taught the stuff specific to their MDS. Plenty of blame to go around. Not to mention the students themselves who get into msn qual and forget basic qual/instrument stuff when they stop studying it

Is this common? Seems to be more and more impossible in most communities Ive been around.

To clarify, I know about white jets/RPAs, but I mean making an MWS change seems like a rare thing to me outside of selective programs.

Like so many things timing is huge. They may tell you it’s impossible and 12-18 months later it’s a different story. Stick to your guns, fight for it, and get your CC on your side. I’ve seen plenty of folks do it over the years

For me, the difference has always been the flightline ECP.  From the moment I step over and take the long walk to the aircraft, there is no job I'd rather have until I cross it again. Early on in my career, there was almost nothing I wouldn't do to be able to walk across that line and fly the aircraft.

It all gets balanced by everything that happens on the other side of the ECP. If a person's interest lies in flying aircraft, it typically doesn't take but a few years to accomplish most of the general flying achievements available to you in your aircraft.

The problem among younger folks seems to be flying the same mission currencies for the X hundredth time doesn't offset the increasing level of frustration from everything on the other side of the ECP.

People are losing their enthusiasm for the best job in the world earlier than ever, and it isn't just because they're not looking at the bright side of things.

    ^solid

Something that’s exciting can get boring after X years flying the same mission. When you have nothing left to achieve or accomplish in that community it’s time to find a new one/challenge, before you become that disgruntled dude just waiting to retire

...but I was curious how long it takes new studs/Lt's to become disillusioned and want to get out as well.

    deployment #1= “this is awesome!”

deployment #2= “cool, I got this”

deployment #3 = “I’m the old pro now”

deployment #4 = “well, here I am again”

deployment #5+ = “ok WTF are we doing here!?”

  13. New guy with random question

Previously had a VA loan. Sold the home a few years ago.

I know there are restrictions on how many active VA loans you can have at one time but are there any restrictions on receiving a new loan (second iteration in my case) after you’ve sold a previous home on a VA loan. I assume not but haven’t found a solid answer yet. Anyone with experience?
