did you get the waiver at FCI or after FCI?

Corona drew out the decision on my FCI, and I'm currently working on an eye waiver to submit back to either USAFSAM or AETC. I'm unfamiliar with how the post-FCI waiver process works, and my wing, while sponsoring me through all of this, is saying that this is 'uncharted territory' for them.

It was submitted during my FC1 by the optometrist.

    Hey,

From creeping on some of your other posts it look like you got picked up? If so, congrats!! I was curious if you had any updates or advice from people who are also rushing that will need an ETP for age. I've got my eye on the Rickenbacker Unit or other 135 units I can drive to from Indy.

Congratulations again (I think) on getting picked up!

Hey, thanks! I did get picked up! It worked out at a Reserve unit who was comfortable doing age waivers and it was approved. I am still waiting on official OTS dates because at this time I only have projected dates from the 340th. I was planning on writing up a longer post once everything is sorted out with that. I was hired around the end of 2018 at this unit, it's a long process!

Rickenbacker originally told me they wouldn't do waivers and then a few months later called me up out of the blue and told me to come in for a "pop up" board but I had already started the process with my current unit. As for advice, I followed what @FDNYOldGuy did as best I could even though he did an even better job than I did! Do everything you can possibly do before you even apply or get an interview. It will make a difference, trust us. Get your FC1 done on your own dime if you can and check out the things offered on BogiDope. I did a mock interview with them and it definitely helped. If you have specific questions, you can always pm me.

Update:  I finally got a test date.  Still waiting to take the TBAS (hopefully next week but that’s not confirmed yet) but my AFOQT scores are: P-95/N-89/A-83/V-96/Q-56.

I’m less than impressed with that Quant score, but workable?

You have better scores than I did and I also needed an age/medical waiver. Keep pushing!

Does anyone have any insight on the MacDill board coming up in June? I know the applications are due March 1st and I have looked at the info on BogiDope for a timeline. Just wondering if anyone knows how competitive/how many candidates usually are asked to rush or are interviewed. I only ask because most job postings have a very direct/cut and dry list of what to send in whereas the posting for MacDill is very laid back and just says shoot a resume to the email listed. Any info or tips would be great, thanks

It's competitive, it's Tampa. There's some good dudes down there and they definitely want you to visit before the board.

Does anyone know how long it generally takes for a waiver to clear AETC after FC1?  A waiver not related to height (which I've heard that one takes 3-4 months)? The docs at Wright-Patt were saying I should know in the normal period (30-60 days), but just wanted to hear general timelines for folks.

    Thanks.

I had an eye waiver that was approved in under 30 days last summer.

Can someone fill me in on what exactly I have to get done between getting hired and getting to OTS? I was picked up a Heavy Reserve squadron and i'm working with a recruiter, but he is barely giving me any information.

    Hired: October 2019

    MEPS: December/January 2019

I need a physical at Wright-Patterson? and I need to be accepted by the Air Force Reserves board? Then I can swear in and be gained by the 340th? I haven't had anyone confirm these for me, just things I've picked up from reading this forum.

That's accurate. ANG guys swear in much earlier in the process than the reserve side. We do it right before we get gained by the 340th.

Hi all, reviving this post for a waiver question. I'm 33, planning to apply to AFR / ANG UPT positions, and will need an age waiver as I understand it. When in the process does an age waiver come into play, and who initiates it? Do I need to get one before applying to a unit? Or does it only come into play after (if) I am accepted by a unit, and then they initiate it for me? Any clarification would be much appreciated.

You will work with the unit that hires you and a recruiter to navigate the lengthy age waiver gauntlet.

    @n730

Hey, thanks for the reply. Yeah, unfortunately my age most likely is playing a big role. Only received the generic feedback that was a part of the mass rejection email: increase scores, hours, community involvement, improve LOR's - that kind of stuff. Understandable, they don't have the time to reply to everyone, and that all applies to me anyway.

I'm already studying for a AFOQT retake. The way I look at it, if I'm not confident I can study well and ace a retake, how can I prove to a board I can handle all the studying that's a part of UPT and squadron life? Especially since I've got the age stink on me, I can't just coast on a good pilot score, I'll need every advantage I can get.

    Appreciate the response.

If it were me, I would absolutely not retake the AFOQT. Your scores are great and are super competitive. Your resume and experience is much greater than most people that apply. Make sure you communicate that being older has led to achieving all of the things you have done so far etc. You have a phenomenal well rounded packet imo. (just my .02 coming from an age waiver heavy guy)

Hello there everybody, figured I'd do the same as most people on here and throw out my numbers to get some feedback since the AD board is in January. Little bit about myself, currently 26 and been in the guard since I turned 18, coming up on 8 years next month. Now you all are probably going to laugh, but hell I am too, I'm probably the only case you've seen of an enlisted Security Forces troop trying to jump in a plane, but I think I may just have the numbers to do it.

    GPA: 3.13

    AFOQT: 92 Pilot, 86 Nav, 85 Acad, 98 Verb, 60 Quant

PCSM: 62 because I have a whopping goose egg when it comes to real life seat time, however my "prospective" score as I keep seeing get thrown around in other threads is 97. That should count for something right?

LORs: Still working on getting them in hand from within unit first before looking elsewhere

So all things considered, should I stick with my current plan of action of waiting to see how I fare at the active board before I start fishing with other guard/reserve units or start throwing them out there ASAP?

I personally would start applying ASAP but that depends on what you want to do as a career and whether that involves favoring AD or flying civilian or even something else entirely. If you want a good shot at fighters and the family doesn't mind moving around for a while then AD is the way to go. The scores look good but I would advocate doing at least some single engine GA flying to bump it up a few levels and get to that first solo at a minimum.

  10. I used BogiDope for a mock interview and was thoroughly impressed and feel a lot more prepared for the real deal. Without giving all of his info away just in case (seems like some of us spoke to the same person), the interviewer I had is a current fighter pilot commander who not only interviewed over 5 times himself as an applicant but has now sat on more UPT boards than he can remember. It was great practice and just a good way to ease some of the nerves before going to the real interview. He gave me great feedback after and I really feel a lot more comfortable after having done a mock with him.

I also just love getting emails from the site saying that a new job posting has opened up and frantically opening the email to see what airframe/where it is!

This is an extremely weird question, but how important are looks when making videos or rushing and interviewing? I've been told I'm really not a looker so I'm wondering if this actually repels me and my application? I definitely dress for the occasion and am not sloppy looking by any means but I'm also not a Brad Pitt or a Matt Damon.

    Brad Pitt is dreamy...

Side note: I got my rejection email from the 133rd ARS at Pease for the KC-46 today. I know most of you guys are looking at fighters but good luck to whoever gets a shot at the new tanker, looks pretty nice compared to the 1958 model!

Currently going through AF Reserve and applying to ANG Units, just seeing which one pops up an opportunity first. Since I have time, I'm giving Fighters a shot, but won't say no to a UPT slot.

Just started applying to a few boards, no bites yet. Gonna try to visit a couple units in 2019 to improve my chances, since to me it seems pretty mandatory to be considered. Maybe I'll run into you while visiting a unit?

I haven't rushed any too far from me yet but have chatted with the guys at Youngstown who were awesome and said they definitely need pilots and can work a waiver. I plan on checking out Mansfield and have heard great things about the guys at Rickenbacker. I did get a couple interview bites for next month at some heavy units so we'll see how that goes! I also got rejected today for the KC-46 at Pease but I figured that would be a pretty competitive one anyway even without needing an ETP.

Based on my experience thus far in the recruiting process, a lot of Heavy units can't get enough candidates, much less those with credentials like yourself!

My recruiter was telling me a lot of good news on the Reserve side in regards to heavy squadrons, being younger than you and with slightly better scores, so with your extra credentials and flight experience I feel you'd be a shoe in.

You should easily get a slot if you just head down to a few squadrons and meet them, and it should be pretty simple for you to go either ANG or Reserve Sponsored and grab a waiver.

    Good luck!

Prior E with good stats... make sure your app is clear of errors, start sending it out and visiting units. You should have a home in no time, good luck!

Thanks guys, that's what I was hoping to hear but wasn't sure how much the age issue still applies in this environment. I've sent my packet to a few heavy units recently so we'll see what happens! Where are you guys at in the process? @Engraft @Waterhouse

  14. What's up everybody! Long time lurker, first time poster. I'm a former AD KC-135 Boom Operator that has been working to get a spot for UPT anywhere and on any airplane! I obviously feel like I'd be a good fit at a tanker squadron since I know the drill but I am open to serving once again anyway and anywhere I can. Here are some of my scores:

    Age: 32! I don't feel THAT old...

    KC-135 Boom Operator, MacDill AFB

    Pilot: 90 PCSM: 89

    Bachelor's of Business Admin 3.1

    MBA 4.0

Commercial Pilot License; ASEL; Instrument Airplane

    295 Total Time

    LOR's

    Major - KC-135 Pilot, Reserves

Captain - KC-135 Pilot, Current AD T6 IP

    Lt. - KC-135 Pilot, ANG

    Director of MBA Program

    Volunteer Coordinator at Hospice

I was a boomer down at MacDill while I was active for a few years and have since moved back up north to my home state of Ohio. I'm a diehard Browns fan and can kind of say that proudly now since we've actually won a football game! I've been finishing my MBA and flying GA aircraft since I separated. The GI Bill has been a godsend. I have just finished my CPL and will be going for my CFI in October. I found my love for airplanes and service a little later in life than most but I'm hoping that I don't get penalized too harshly for that. I didn't grow up in an aviation or military family and I decided to join the Air Force and enlist after I graduated with my bachelor's degree. It seemed like a small decision at the time but it changed my life in so many ways. I loved my job while enlisted and the only reason I decided not to reenlist was because I knew I finally had a passion in life and it wasn't behind a desk in the business sector, it was flying airplanes. I've been shooting my applications out wide and far because my wife and I are 100% committed to relocating anywhere that would have us. She works in a hospital and has never had trouble finding a job while I was dragging her across the country during my active duty time. She understands the lifestyle and the deployments since she's already been through it with me before (if you can call 2 month tanker deployments a deployment!).

This forum has been such an amazing resource already and I've made some great contacts just from reading others posts and chatting through messages. I hope to see some of you guys out there or message me on here, thanks for reading!

    Go Browns!
