You rocked the retake on the AFOQT man...thanks for sharing...I'll share my results on this thread when I retake...gunning for the end of April to give myself a month to take practice tests.

I practiced the table reading a lot because those feel like 40 free points to me. When practicing, make sure to account for the time it takes to fill in the bubble sheet! That takes almost as long as actually finding the answer.

    Good luck!

    1st AFOQT Pilot Score: 87

    1st PCSM Score: 83 @ 101-200 hour bracket....87 @ 201+ hours

Post Retake of the TBAS without a change in flight hours: 89 @ 101-200 hour bracket....93 @ 201+hours

For the guys that have retaken the AFOQT and have improved their AFOQT Pilot section, what did see for an increase in your PCSM score?

What is a fair expectation of my PCSM score increase if I raise the AFOQT Pilot let's say to 90 or a 95?

Also any pointers or words of advice to help increase the AFOQT pilot score would be appreciated.... I'm in the process of studying for a retake and I'm open for any suggestions.

    Thanks!

Pasting in a comment I made in a thread a few years back.

"I retook my AFOQT and my pilot score went from an 81 to 98 and my PCSM score jumped from a 65 with 21 hours of flight time to a 77 with 21 hours of flight time."

To summarize, my pilot score increased by 17 and my PCSM increased by 12, flight hours constant.

  3. Nice! I did one of the Bogidope packages as well and I think it helped me a lot.

I interviewed with my own unit 4 times before I finally got picked up so I'd keep at it. Maybe they want to see the persistence while also improving your package each time?

Also, I know it's not a requirement to be hired, but finishing up your PPL like you mentioned you might do next month certainly can't hurt your chances. When I was on the interview circuit I swear 95%+ of the other candidates I talked to had a PPL at minimum.

    Keep at it!

I don't really care what I fly or where as long as it's something pointy nosed.

Maybe that's why you haven't gotten an interview yet? I'd imagine that each unit wants to see passion and excitement over their own air frame and mission. Big difference between an F-35 and an A-10 in both the airplane itself as well as the mission set. What is your preference? Your stats are awesome by the way. Nice work!

Beside the flash cards what did you do to prepare?  My reserve recruiter is encouraging me NOT to retake the TBAS because he is concerned I'll do worse.  Current scores for the audience:

    AFOQT Pilot: 98

    Hours: 103

PCSM: 88 (hypothetical 91 with hours maxed out)

I've just seen people with much higher PCSM scores while having lower hours and similar AFOQTs.  Makes me think I bombed it when I took it 3 years ago.

If I were in your shoes, I'd retake the TBAS. I can't speak for everyone, but I did much better on it my second time since I knew what to expect. Good luck!

Is a joint board interview different than a single airframe interview?  I would expect it to be longer, but any pointers on what to expect?  Especially in terms of expressing which airframe interests you the most.  I wouldn't want to shoot my chances down for one airframe by showing too much interest in another.

I've done both. Most of the questions are similar, but in a joint board interview they will ask you your preference of airframe. I'd be prepared to answer honestly while keeping in mind that there will be representatives from each airframe on the interviewing panel. Focus on the reasons why you want to fly your first choice rather than focusing on reasons you don't want to fly the other options represented, if that makes sense. In other words, don't shit all over the planes/squadrons that aren't of interest to you.

    Good luck!

Sorry, shouldn't have worded it that way. Guess more of frustration than anything. Wasn't bashing on you John. The process is really grueling but I shouldn't let it get the best of me.

No offense taken. Honestly there's not much you could say that would get under my skin.

In one of my prior interviews at a unit outside of my own, there was a fellow applicant that offered a helping hand to anyone not familiar with the area. So, although I wish I could take credit for the idea, it definitely was not my own. Just trying to help others out on here the way they've helped me.

Good luck with your quest for wings!

  8. For any of you guys coming to Duluth this week for interviews, send me a PM if you have any questions on where to stay, places to eat, modes of transportation around Duluth, etc. I'm from the area and am a part of the 148th so I'd be glad to help out.

For clarification, I am NOT on the board but am a UPT applicant just like everyone else here. Looking forward to throwing back some cold ones with you guys at the meet n' greet.

Super. I actually decided to post it in the Pilot Network facebook group to get some feedback before I posted it and it was just an endless wave of "OMG SHAVE AND PULL THE STICK OUT OF YOUR ASS." 😞That said it was really good feedback.

How do you know they all downvoted you though??

I saw that post in the Pilot Network and read through all the comments too. Always good feedback on that site. You survived your first murder board!

Who else is embarrassed and insecure about their 2-3 minute video that the 176th required? I want to delete mine asap 😳

The thought of doing it made me put it off until early August but once I actually went through with it I enjoyed it. I don't like talking about myself especially on video but good things happen when you step outside your comfort zone.

  11. Most of the pilots at my unit (that I know) that are prior enlisted seemed to have enlisted AFSCs that involved touching the jet in some fashion. Avionics, Fuels, Engine Shop, Weapons, Crew Chief, etc... This is just my experience though so I'm sure pilots at other units have varying backgrounds.

I have near 400 hours but for some reason my pcsm score is coming out as me having zero hours. I called the proctor and she said she would investigate. My score without is 64 and my speculative with 201+ is 97. Has this happened to anyone before? Why do you think my hours are at zero?

I would assume it's just an error on their part. See how it plays out with the proctor investigating, I'm sure they will get to the bottom of it as long as everything on your end is legit.

I know this is an old post, however, when applying to guard units does it have to be the guard unit you're currently stationed to? How do interviews work, do you travel out of pocket? Thanks!

You can apply to any unit you want. It doesn't have to be your own and yes, all travel expenses to interviews are out of your own pocket.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Re-taking AFOQT Feb 1st.  I'll make sure to post when I get an update in about a month.

Current PCSM 63 and Pilot Score is 59 NAV 33.  I've also crossed the threshold of 100 flight hours and will be getting that added to my PCSM as well for an estimated extra 4 points (I'll take it.)

Crushing the books as we speak.

    Cheers.

Just to give you some inspiration as to what a better AFOQT pilot score and TBAS can do, I got an 81 on the pilot portion of my first test. With that and my flight hours in the 21-40 bracket, I had a PCSM of 65. After studying my ass off, I took the AFOQT a second time and scored a 98 in the pilot section while still in the same bracket for flight hours. With my score going from 81 to 98, it raised by PCSM from 65 to 77. So, 17 higher points on my AFOQT pilot section equated to an additional 12 points in the PCSM calculation.  Now I doubt that this calculation is linear but it does give you a glimpse into what is possible if you do really well on your retake.

After bumping my PCSM to 77, I then retook the TBAS and raised my PCSM to 83 while still in the 21-40 flight hours bracket. Since then, I've gotten my PPL and my PCSM sits at 87 (41.3 hours) and 98 if you're looking at the 201+ column.

I hope this helps. Good luck with the studying and let me know if you have any questions.

I know  you have to take the AFOQT before taking the TBAS, but if you have already taken the AFOQT once, you can ask the education office if you can take the TBAS now and retake the AFOQT later on.

This is incorrect. I took my TBAS about a month before I took my AFOQT. The downside to this was that a PCSM score wouldn't generate until I had taken the AFOQT.

Personal opinion: If your 201+ column is in the high 80's and above, and everything else is solid, you should be good to go. I wouldn't retake with a 96 PCSM in the 201+ column quite yet. Keep visiting and applying, and ask for feedback. If the feedback is consistently "your PCSM is too low"... then consider retaking the TBAS.

I ended up retaking the TBAS on Saturday and raising my PCSM from 77 to 83 and my 201+ column from 96 to 98. The main reason I decided to retake was to present and "all in" approach to the board. I'm 27 so I want to make sure I turn over every stone as I only have a couple years left to apply. I appreciate your advice TK1313.

I'm not sure it works that way. The better you do on the TBAS the less your flight hours effect your PCSM. For instance if you blow it out of the water and get a PCSM of 90, 100 more flight hours might only increase it a point or two. Its a super dooper special  formula they use.

If you are positive you can do better than by all means give it a shot, but just remember you can only take it twice and you always run the risk of lowering your score.

I would defiantly focus on finishing your PPL though, they say you don't have to have it finished but everyone that i've seen get hired (including myself) at least had a PPL and the majority had advanced ratings. I think its more important than some people might think.

So after weighing my options, I ended up retaking the TBAS on Saturday and raised my PCSM from 77 to 83 while my flight hours bracket of 21-40 did not change.  My max PCSM at 201+ hours would be 98. You were right Heavy, the scale is definitely not linear. I appreciate your advice.
