Does the ROK claim sovereignty over the whole peninsula? I didn't think so, and it seems like most political parties are very much pro status quo as basically nobody in the South wants to shoulder any portion of the massive burden rebuilding the north would be. They see how difficult it was (and still is!) when Good Germany annexed East Germany, and the disparity in wealth, education, and political systems were all far smaller than South Korea vs. North Korea.

The second one is the whole point. We locked down so the medical system could beef up and prepare for the flood. They should be ready by now. In many states they absolutely are.

I'm not so sure they did. I was really expecting to see some move to surge the number of healthcare workers, and it doesn't seem like that's happened. I think New York let NYU's graduating medical school class practice a few months early, but otherwise nothing. It's too bad a big portion of the stimulus wasn't a "How to be a COVID-19 healthcare support worker" program for newly unemployed people, maybe with the course counting for credit towards an RN after the emergency is over.

The Attempt was made but the Reserves did not agree. There is a memorandum of understanding on the AD side that allows them to send the T38 washouts to toners and track heavies. The AD chain sent this letter to Randolph in an attempt to have me re-track heavies like some of the other bros that washed out as well. Randolph's response was that this letter was AD only and it did not apply to them, quoting they did not have the resources. No joy for me on that front.

Yikes. That sounds like the 340th for me. Guard does the same thing as AD, so I don't know why the Reserves would be different.

  4. Getting an instrument rating now is probably not worth the money; I didn't have one before I went and I did better than some people who did (and worse than others who had even less time). Enjoy your free time and ability to travel, because with the current environment it seems like you're gonna be stuck on/near base even during the weekends. I wouldn't even really bother wasting money maintaining currency - you're gonna have so many delays and gaps before you start in T-6s that it won't really be relevant, and honestly a single ride in the IFT is probably better prep for flying a T-6 than a dozen hours in a Cessna.

When you get there, find more advanced students and actively learn from them. My biggest mistake at UPT was waiting until I failed at something before getting someone's advice on how to learn it. I went to my dollar ride with very little clue of what would actually be expected on the ride - it's very student driven, the IP isn't going to tell you "OK now go do this, no perform this maneuver, etc." and that threw me.

We've had government try and reign in the heart disease/obesity numbers by instituting things like the sugar-tax and the healthy school lunch programs but instead Americans just complain and say it's their right to drink a big gulp with their hot dog and get diabetes.

It's not just that it's their right to do the bad things; it's also their right to have someone else pay for it (be it their employer via health insurance, the government, or the hospital).

    Complaining Checklist

So I've been keeping up with my airline's pilot forum, doing what any newb should do, stay quiet and listen.  But I'm getting quite tired of the "us vs union vs them vs us," "pay me," and etc. attitudes.  And tired of the "gross mismanagement" talk like anyone would ever fathom that air traffic would fall 95% for months to come.  I've already concluded that there will be displacements and furloughs this fall, barring any further gov't assistance (but now they want to change this latest deal to 70% grant/30% loan).  I'd love to see a 3 Musketeer attitude, but way too much hate/distrust/anger/negativity.  I think I'll look into that truck driving school... oh wait, no schools open.  Day trading? Nope, I'll lose the rest of it trying that.  Instagram Influencer, screw that, I can't pout my face that much and not enough photoshop skillz.  Sport bitching?  Nah, season was cancelled.  Beer light has been on the last 2 weeks solid, which is nice.  Oh well.

    Venting - Complete

Strategically, the pilots are wanting to hold the line based on their past bankruptcy experiences. Any compromise on pay and benefits now, and a Federal bankruptcy judge will use that compromise as a starting point for new terms and conditions later. It's better to go into bankruptcy from a strong position than a weak one.

That sucks about having an immuno-compromised wife and forgive my ignorance but what’s stopping her from quarantining herself, while the rest of the world gets on with life?

Sent from my iPhone using Baseops Network mobile app

Basically the argument is that no self-quarantine is going to be perfect. There will always be breaches. The social distancing / economic shutdown is intended to spread these breaches over a long period, so that when a vulnerable person does get it, they're not showing up to a hospital already overwhelmed by other sick, vulnerable people.

I read that something like 15K families in San Antonio alone. 15,000 families in one city need food assistance.

15,000 families in a city of 1.5 million want food assistance, not necessarily need. It's like when Florida has the National Guard passing out MREs and bags of ice during a hurricane; people will line up for hours for free stuff even though the Publix right behind the distribution site is open and stocked.

What luck have guard guys had being able to sell it back?  I'll be coming off orders at the end of Sep....

I'm in the same boat, with 40+ days right now. I've been told that I can take leave to stay at home (despite already being on a work from home status).

Well maybe your right. Using Taiwan, Singapore, Korea and Hong Kong as examples, they did extremely well comparatively to us and others. Hong Kong 7.5 million Population, under 1,000 cases, 4 deaths. Definitely having been thru SARS helped, borders are different, but I would give it to the local discipline/culture. We enjoy incredible freedoms beyond most which I cherish and I wouldn’t swap with China and have my doors welded shut that is for sure. This is an unfortunate learning experience. Definitely nothing compared to what the Greatest Generation endured, but baby steps hopefully not needed, ever. Just an opinion.

Yeah, those countries' stay-at-home-orders were "stay at home, if you come out you're going to jail." Not our version where you go pick up some baking supplies, play some basketball at the community center, hit the gym, go touch some playground equipment, etc., etc. Ours will work at flattening the curve, but you're not gonna suppress the virus that way.

I look at it from the standpoint of sex:  pulling out isn't the best method of birth control.  However, it's better than not pulling out, especially when I can't get a condom.  Now find a way to make that work for masks.

    You're welcome.

The problem is if it makes you think you're safe(r), you're more likely to engage in hazardous activity. Plus, touch your face a ton fixing the mask. It's like people wearing gloves, it makes people feel safe and all but guarantees they aren't washing their hands.

One dude had all of them but the fever..."no test, not COVID-19."
One dude's wife is positive, no test for the rest of the family, they only had fevers and slight cough..."no test, not COVID-19."
Another guy had all the symptoms, not healthcare worker..."no test, not COVID-19."
Buddy in another Sq, all symptoms and had to get carried into the ER, not healthcare worker, "no test, not COVID-19."  He had to have his family carry him to the bathroom he was so exhausted.

This is going to have the effect, intentionally or not, of reducing the reported caseload, making containment efforts look more effective. And of course, making the death rate look even worse.

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/02/coronavirus-boeing-to-get-nearly-900-million-in-withheld-payments-from-air-force.html

A catch-22 I guess. Either pay the balance on a delivered deficient product, or risk Boeing going under and not getting any more KC-46 support/airplanes.  Although the second option doesn’t seem too terrible with all the issues the plane has right now.

I'm not normally one for government getting into the private sector... but if we're basically admitting our acquisition strategy is "dump money into the giant hole until it's full", maybe we should just buy Boeing Defense and run it ourselves. Could it be worse?

  14. It's not just AETC, many government agencies and individuals are totally fine with telling others to sacrifice their businesses, lifestyles, and jobs to fight the virus but don't feel they need to make any changes themselves. It's basic game theory, if everyone else social distances and you don't, that's the best case scenario for you. How many commanders calls have been held since we were told to not gather in groups?

  15. I was a Reserve hire and my wife stayed in our hometown while I was at UPT. It worked out well for us. Definitely some stresses involved, but on the plus side we were about a 7 hour car ride apart - we were able to spend about every other weekend together. Might not work as well if he gets Laughlin and you live in New York, say. Realize that you can always quit your job and move to the UPT base after the fact if the separation isn't working out for you. Also, Reserve and Guard hires tend to get through UPT a bit faster by virtue of less time sitting around waiting for class dates, your spouse could be done in twelve months if the stars align right, not two years.

It’s sim time only. Also, 80 hours isn’t going to be a deal breaker for a mil guy. I’m a child of sequestration.. 1/10 of my total flight time is Other time.. counts for zero.

I'm a reservist off the street with no real prior flight time to speak of, so I'm trying to set myself up in case whatever full-time status I am on fall through. I'd rather have an R-ATP in my back pocket in case Sequestration Part II occurs.

  17. For purposes of ATP mins and airline hiring, how should sim time (in a level D) be logged? I'm hearing/reading various guidance, from logging it as sim time only, to logging it as total time, sim time, instrument time, PIC or SIC, all at once. I don't want to overreach and get my hand slapped when I'm going for an ATP or applying, but I also don't want to cut myself out of 80+ hours of usable time.

Something else to remember is that Aramco is looking to IPO soon, and higher gas prices would benefit them too...

It definitely doesn't benefit Aramco to remind everyone that investing there is extremely risky.

I stayed at the Turnberry last year.  I've been stopping in Prestwick to/from deployments since 2002. We just tell the FBO when and how many people, and they make the arrangements. Last year we arrived right after a snow/ice storm that shut most of the major freeways for days. All of the hotels in Ayre (our usual location) and Glasgow were booked. The Turnberry, an hour drive away,  had enthusiastically agreed to give us the government rate. The hotel itself was absolutely incredible and the staff thanked us profusely for our service. The bartender let us sample some of the local Scotch whiskeys. It was too cold for golf, but we toured the course which was an old WWII pilot training base, and some of the old runways/taxiways still exist on the course. The hotel called in a bagpiper to play us out the door as we departed for the sandbox at 5am. It was one of the best deployment sendoffs ever. There was nothing to it other than it was the only place with rooms available at the government rate, and the FBO was proud to have found a place that they thought we would enjoy. The media and politicians are idiots.

The issue in question isn't really about the President or the resort (though, of course, that's all anyone cares about). My wild guess as to the hustle going on is that the airport is paying for the rooms/hospitality at Turnberry in the hopes of attracting big-ticket fuel purchases. If the fuel cost an extra $.50 a gallon over what DoD would have paid at a different airport, a good deal for the aircrew turns into a $25,000 hit to the taxpayers. It's kind of similar to the Fat Leonard scandal the Navy just put a bunch of folks in prison for (but likely a lot harder to prove any wrongdoing on the Air Force's part, because we can just say "operational necessity").
