I believe this is where all of the "bad decisions start/stop".

I've always leaned toward President hopefuls that either (1) have a distinct and honorable military background, or (2) prove that they will do whatever is in the best interest of our troops...

Oh good.  This conversation again.  Wheeee.

At least we're on my favorite page now... But I kind of like the idea of giving everyone who does well enough in T-6's (and wants fast flyers) a shot in the T-38... It should eventually become evident who's cut out for it and who's not...

I've never taken the Viper to combat.  Having said that, I'm not sure I would ever want to.  The jet is a nightmare from a human factors or avionics perspective.  The RADAR is a joke.  The ability to utilize sensors is still a slave to a 1970s construct that has been completely debunked and remains a complete liability to the airframe.  Many of the current DT efforts are an attempt to bring the jet to a level that is, in many ways, equivalent with F-15E Suite 5, let alone Suite 9.  Except for Auto ICAS.  I wish the F-15C/D/E could get that, if only for risk reduction.  In many ways, the Viper jet is a true testament to the dudes flying the jet.  There's a ton of compensation required to employ it effectively, and the bros have done an amazing job over the last 25 years making that jet as lethal as it has been.

Wow, you really are living the dream. And nice description of the pros and cons of both... So basically, fun flying: Viper easy choice; War fighting: F-15 easy choice?

"it's pretty easy to figure out which party benefits uses the military for PR purposes more" is more accurate.

Republicans lost their way after 9/11 when the party became a platform for businesses to profit through legislation.

Oh, I'm not gonna get into the career politicians argument... But your post reminded me of the Louis Griffin 9/11 joke...

  5. Thanks for the tips, guys. I'm not so worried about not being strong in other areas. I am confident in my other attributes, and even my flying skills, I just don't want it to come off as "hey, take my halfway put together packet and that's all you get". I'm trying to get my Class I done, I'm just waiting on my 3 years of medical history from my old doctor (no, I don't have 3 years of appointments memorized).... I'm going to reach out to a bunch of people over the next couple of days to try to give me recommendations, and I'll write myself a good recommendation and see if they'll concur with what I've written and sign it (great advice, mb). If I'm lucky enough to get an interview, I'll definitely be more at ease. I love interviews, because I've never really bought into the whole "my scores determine who I am". Again, not trying to make excuses for doing poor, I would just take walking into an interview room over simply submitting scores any day. Good thing ANG/AFRC at least requires a face-to-face interview if you pass the initial screening (scores/resume/etc).

  6. STUPID QUESTION ALERT: I just wanted to some of the guys who have been interviewed/hired for the ANG/AFRC... Have you ever submitted an application package that was less than ideal? I have had my eyes on a squadron that isn't necessarily close to where I work (about a day's drive), but it is in my home state and just seems like a good fit for me. Here are the following issues:
    1. My PCSM is below the minimum for my flight hours (34). When I contacted them about it, they told me they look at the 201+ column, and to submit my application anyways.
    2. I only have a class II, and not a class I medical (yet). I have amazing eyesight, and have been told that the class I thing isn't a huge consideration as long as the reason for not having the class I is the fact that you aren't physically qualified.
    3. I probably will only have 1 (maybe 2) letters of recommendation. Although strong, the unit allows a maximum of 3, and I don't want them to think I'm not taking them seriously if I don't max everything out.

I don't want to ruin any future chances with the squadron if they see my package and think, "Man, this guy just submitted garbage to us", especially since they're a squadron I could see myself applying to multiple times.

    END 17-08

    9 AD T-38's (no shit), 1 INTL, 1 Guard, so 11 total T-38's

    13 T-1's

    1 Helo

Wait, so you're telling me that the media may be right about the huge shortage of AF fighter pilots? Something about that last sentence just makes me uneasy... "the media may be right"... Yep, that just doesn't sound right. I'm thinking that class must be just an outlier.

More like the Bush 43 administration effectively ended production of the Raptor. It was clearly dead in 2008 at a 183 jet fleet (thanks Bob Gates) and the House Republicans got $50M allocated to buy 4 more literally for the PR purpose of tagging Obama with the decision. Not that he gets any credit for falling for it, but the POTUS was not going to invest in a program his (Republican) secretary of defense opposed.

This is why I hate politics; I can never figure out where the bad decisions start/stop and who started what (plus, politicians just give me that bad gut feeling). As a broad brush approach, though, I think the "it's pretty easy to figure out which party benefits the military more" comment above was spot on...

  9. I'm currently putting together my packet for the applications, and I had a couple questions about the letters of recommendation:

    1. I know (very well) a retired Vice Admiral F/A-18 pilot, and regularly interact with F/A-18 pilots (I know, I'm very lucky). I also know a retired F-16 ANG guy pretty well, and a retired C-130 pilot (AD and reserves I believe). So I'm most likely going to choose the Vice Admiral and the F-16 pilot since I'm rushing fighter squadrons, but who do I choose as my third? Would a squadron be more interested in the F/A-18 pilots I work around, or a C-130 guy that I know through my dad, and happens to be a really good guy that helped talk me into going ANG/AFRC rather than AD?

    2. If there are a maximum of 3 letters of recommendation for an applicant. Would it be more beneficial to have all 3 as fighter pilots, or does that give off the sense that I'm saying, "look who my dad knows"? I know the pilots pretty well, but I can honestly say I would have never known them if my dad wasn't a pilot.
