Anyone here have any knowledge of how easy it is/was to go from say an Intel officer position to a rated pilot etc position? I’m looking to see what the chances are of jumping ship from non rated to rated positions.

I'd check out the two threads for the 2017 and 2018 active duty rated board. Lots of good info, stats, etc in there.

EN 18-01 drops tomorrow and had to put the growler on their dreamsheets. Today they were called in by the SNR and told to not expect great things at their drop. They had to reorganize their dreamsheets with emphasis on non-fighter options.

We had a Commander's Call today and the 71 OG spoke briefly on the T-38 assignments topic. He said the AF had to cut 40 F-16 slots. It wasn't specifically clarified but I presume that was for FY18 classes. He said it was due to the F-16 training units at Holloman not coming online as fast as the AF expected. With the reduced F-16 drops future T-38 classes could expect to see more drops from AFSOC and the ISR communities. U-28s, EC-130s, RC-135s, MC-130s, and CV-22s were specifically mentioned.

Is getting T-6 FAIP'd from T-38s a normal thing? Seems like they would want all T-38 grads to go straight to the CAF.

I am looking to put in a package for RPA as soon as possible.  I have a few questions though.  I will be PCSing in Dec-Jan time frame.  Is there any retainability issues with me putting in a package.  I have heard that you have to be on station for a year prior to being released for cross training.  I am hopeful that by the time I put in a package and hopefully get selected, that I would have been on station for a year at my new base.  Any help would be appreciated.

There are zero TOS requirements to apply. You can be at your new base for 1 day and still be selected on the board. This applies if you're already an O applying for the "Active Duty UFT Board". If you are enlisted applying for the new RPA board or OTS then I am not sure if there is TOS requirements or not.

    2.  Make the non-verbal signals clear: stop the anti-ops "you're all officers and equal" jihad.  I won't rant about why.

    3.  Man the queep positions so that pilots/rated only do DOT, DOV, etc jobs aside from flying, aka those that require their expertise.

    7.  Most important: CSAF has to get out there, to every base, and every squadron bar, with nametags off and interview the pilots/CSOs/STS dudes with beer in hand and no entourage.  This is the hardest part.  He/She MUST establish credibility by allowing the rank and file to speak truth to power at the risk of being disrespectful.  This will be a self-sustaining process; if the CSAF showed up here, paid my bar tab and got me a DD, I would whiteboard out the cycle of factors, at the FGO level, that are ensuring our mission failure - but only if I trusted him.

    8.  I'd overhaul Lackland to look more like an Army basic training unit than the clown show it is now.  Kill the "but the queep reg says" buffoonery, and make 50% or more personal combat skills.  I could go on on this point, but this is the essence of "expenditionary skills" and would motivate people that want to be part of a warfighting organization.  Those who don't: quit.  They will be replaced at their least expensive point.  Folks, it's time to steal from the USMC model and challenge our people to be part of an elite combat unit, not an office camo welfare unit.

These four points make the most sense to me. I would also add that the Air Force is too bureaucratic. We have countless AFIs that govern what we can and cannot do and half the time I read these things they do not make sense. Oh, I need to complete these 10 admin documents, with approvals from these 3 people, to get one simple account of some system that is mandated by an agency that could probably be dismantled tomorrow and no one would care. Coming from the support side myself, I can also see why the two communities need to be treated separately.

  7. Possibly a long shot but does anyone have pictures of what on-base housing looks like for a married O3 no kids. It's hard to believe the Vance Hunt page has nothing considering that is the most important reason to have a website.

Highly recommend retaking the AFOQT after getting a study guide. If you scroll up on this thread, you'll see that on last year's board, the average PCSM was a 92 and the absolute lowest was a 78. Additionally, everyone that got picked up had a PPL. It's all but a requirement these days. Your PCSM should go up a bit after you input your flight hours, and the PCSM website should tell you about how much it will raise (http://access.afpc.af.mil/pcsmdmz/PCSMscores.html).

Also, here's the AFOQT study guide I used before I retook it: Study Guide . My pilot score went from a 77 to a 97 after using it, so it definitely helps.

I did hear through the grapevine that they'll be offering more pilot slots this year, so YMMV. You've got plenty of time between now and next year's board to get your ducks in a row, but do not waste time with the medical issue. As I'm sure you're aware, waivers can take a while to process, especially if you run in to any hangups along the way. Good luck.

More pilots slots this year? Where did you hear that juicy nugget?

    Your scores are good.

if you're AD go to the portal search UFT and there are links there with PowerPoints of the previous 3 boards with max-min and avg scores for all categories.

    hope this helps

Kurt55, those scores are for current Active Duty Officers cross training to Rated. I get the feeling that OP is talking about an OTS board which is slightly less competitive in my opinion.

OP, your scores look good, the 85 PCSM is pretty good considering the low flight hours. Sounds like you must have done well on the TBAS. I have similar scores and was invited to interview at Portland (not selected though) so I wouldn't rule them out completely.

  10. This is for the OTS board right? See the link below. Someone compiled a list of stats from a previous board. It might give you a baseline to compare your stats to others but remember it will change from year to year. You can retake both the AFOQT and TBAS which might be something you should consider. There are some great study books out there for the AFOQT, the test itself is not hard in my opinion but it is quick so the study guides help you answer the questions at the right pace.

My recruiter contacted me this week and asked me that they're looking for unsponsored applicants for the next board. While I would love to apply, I'm worried that since I haven't completed my PPL yet (20hrs) will get me rejected. He seems to think that my scores (98 Pilot; 73 PCSM which is going up to 77 after next week due to flight time). are competitive enough for it to be a non-issue. Does anybody have any insight into this? He's also told me that I have a two lifetime limit to go up to the AFRC board so I definitely don't want to burn a time.

    Thanks!

PS. Also I have some confusion about the board dates. He told me it was in November, but I'm seeing everywhere on here that it's in January. If that's the case there's the small possibility I would have my PPL by the time they convened, if not then super close.

Your concerns are valid but if you don't apply then you won't know. I haven't heard about the two time-application limit but I wouldn't be surprised it was true. When you talk about being sponsored/unsponsored you are always referring to the AFRC UPT Board which is being held in November this year. My OA recruiter told me they usually have applications turned in by 2nd or 3rd week in October for this board. The board in January is the board for Active Duty, meaning you are already a commissioned officer and looking to cross-train to pilot from another career field. The original poster started this as a 2016 AD board discussion but has since moved to an AFRC board discussion which can be confusing. Hope this helps.
