So I guess the take-away here is that if you got a couple mediocre OPRs as a captain, don't bother growing or improving because it won't matter anyway.

I am not exactly sure about this, not to be rogue dissenter guy.  I had mediocre OPRs as an LT and young Captain and still got selected for IDE In Res based on good performance as a senior Capt/Junior Maj.   Also, at a joint command with raters of different services, language like "prep for Sq/CC" is actually good, not bad.  Disappointing, either way, to hear that a couple mediocre OPRs as a junior officer is a disqualifier for O-5....I HOPE it's not true.  Sorry to hear about this bro.

Were you even competitive for 2bpz?

I too am 2bpz.   Only 10% of BPZ got DPs.   1/3 of those are promoted on average, plus/minus

1-star boss told me I had a chance but came away from the MLR with a P so I knew I had no shot.  Same thing for 1BPZ for me most likely -- I'm at a joint command where strats are tough to come by.  Was trading on a couple Wing #1s for 2BPZ and my record will not improve by the next board so at this point...in the zone is more than okay with me.  Heading to IDE In Res next year....assume the school MLR is pretty friendly for IPZ?

Nope, he was just the Projo for the base’s airshow. Unfortunately he’s an optimist.

I know him personally.  He was an IP when I inprocessed my first flying assignment 11 years ago....phenomenal dude.  I knew something wasn't right when I saw him at a  conference a couple years ago and he was still a Major.  So F'ing brutal.

The same way a guy at AF/SE who had PCS orders to command a squadron was passed over. The dumpster fire continues...

This one I honestly can't believe.  Screened and assigned to SQ/CC and passed over for O-5?

Question about declining IDE.  I just found out I was the #4 guy pushed by my SR (2-star) for IDE on my 3rd look. I don’t really have any interest in attending IDE in residence since I love my job, I don’t want to pack up my family so soon (I’ll be at 1.5 years TOS if I get picked up), and frankly I don’t want the 4 year commitment that goes along with it. I’m consistently ranked in the top 10% of my peers and generally consider myself quite competitive for O-5.

    My questions are:

    1) What are the chances of getting picked up for school as the #4 nominee from a 2-Star?

    2) Now that you can decline school without prejudice, is there anyone out there who declined IDE and still made O-5?

#4 of how many nominees?  On my second look, I was #2/7 nominee with some good-to-great wing strats and that landed me on the alternate list.  I ended up getting bumped up to the primary list recently and declined it since I don't want to leave in the middle of my Joint Tour.  There is no prejudice for declining....just make sure you have it done in correspondence prior to your O-5 IPZ board.

    - The O-5 Central Promotion Board will not know whether you declined IDE in-residence or not.  They will only know whether you are complete or incomplete.  Be complete....whether you want to go in-res or not....that is up to you knowing full well, in this crazy system we use for officer command selection and promotion to O-6, in-res graduates do enjoy a marked advantage in these areas.

  6. Food for thought -- it's obvious to me that AF A1 has instituted new guidance instructing senior raters to ignore lack of DE in correspondence for both IDE/SDE nomination and BTZ promotion selection in order to curb the retention crisis.  I am in favor of the guidance and appreciate, that in theory, I will not be dinged because I don't have ACSC in correspondence done for my third look for IDE (candidate status) and 2BPZ look to O-5 this year.  I have some skin in the game as I would otherwise be competitive for BPZ but I don't have PME done.  I'm wondering if we'll see promotion rates go up for BPZs Air Force wide without PME completion.  It should be fairly obvious if the Senior Raters are following this guidance or if it's like a jury trial where the judge instructs the jury to "ignore what you just heard"....but it's very hard to ignore what you just heard.  Thoughts?

Why is nomination on your last look unlikely?  PCS?  Third look nominations for candidates are common (I was one).

Recent PCS to a JDAL billet with a million staff O-4s.  Will have no face time with my senior rater, and my immediate rater is an Army O-5....don't know what to make of it yet.

With those strats I would expect you to be competitive for an alternate slot, but no guarantees.  What look is this for you?  It matters.

That said, the past year things have gotten unpredictable.

Thanks, guys.  Second look for me.   Currently in a joint job with not a lot of air force dudes running around....getting nominated in my last look appears unlikely.  All things considered, I would prefer to go in-res to get out of the grind for a year....even if it is lame.

  9. Knowledgeable folks:  Wondering if anyone has insight into the IDE Central Board.  My 3849 had "#2/7 nominees, #4/110 Wg O-4s..." and some Wg CGO strats.  Box checked "Not a Select".  Think that has a chance to get through or does the non-select thing hurt me too much?  Cheers.

  10. 2 of us from the Wing met the board.  Wg/CC needs 3 to award 1 DP.  Way down this year for whatever reason.  Wg/CC had no DPs...I did get the super P, but obviously didn't score that great at the MLR...which makes me nervous for the board.

How many met the board at your wing?  It's strange that you'd be in the top 5%, but your WG/CC only had enough DPs for the top 4%.
