  1. Anyone have any information/reviews of Colt or S&W 1917's? I've been looking for a classic double/single action revolver and the local shops have a couple around, but don't know much about them.

  2. Have you tried vipbox.tv? My tv crapped itself, and I found out you can watch hockey (and pretty much every other sport) on there.

    Go Blues!

that works well if you also have decent internet...like the AF would provide that

  3. ummm...how?

Research into the causes of CTE point to the skaters stopping from 25-30mph causing minor brain trauma that can add up over time. My use of "proven" may be premature, but research is finding CTE in more and more athletes that recorded few to no concussions in their career. It's scary because the players of the 60's 70's and 80's (when pro sports started getting faster and more violent) are showing a lot of symptoms (memory loss, dementia) at a really early age.

  4. I personally think he wasn't going for hossa's head. Hossa turned in toward center ice right when Torres was coming in with his shoulder. I would understand a 5-game suspension but 25? Come on..

Are you watching the correct hit? Here is the NHL video: bit.ly/JmRvse As you can see, When Hossa turned, he had the puck poked out. More than 2 seconds later, with Torres still turning into Hossa and trying to get a one handed poke at the puck, Torres makes the hit. Obviously Torres can't get the hint as there are 5 other examples where the league told him he's wrong with fines and suspensions for similar hits.

Look up CTE (Chronic traumatic encephalopathy) and you'll see why they want to outlaw these types of hits. Hell, even making a hockey stop has proven to cause brain damage in players and refs. If you want to see players (even high school players) healthy after their playing days are over, you'd see this in a different light.

  5. Torres didn't "jump" the way everyone is portraying the way he did. It's his forward momentum as he goes into the check. As you can see, he led with his shoulder and finished his check the way Rainman said. It's just because it's Hossa..

Even Shanabad can see that it was a dirty hit and he's a dirty player. Hossa or not, those hits have no place in hockey. Hit shoulder to shoulder.

  6. Yeah, I watched it a few times and if he stayed on the ice it would have been acceptable. It is still a problem that he wasn't called for jumping into it, targeting Hossa's head. Have to draw a line somewhere in the rules. Should you be allowed to stab someone in the stomach with a sharpened hockey stick if it is done in the process of finishing a check?

Not that there is anything wrong with that...

If he stayed on the ice he wouldn't have hit the head.

  7. Well, if you are a hockey fan you owe it to yourself to watch the video and at least read this. He's a hall of famer and no one called him a cheap shot artist. People got hurt if they didn't pay attention to where he was. Some of them skated their last shift ever if they forgot to keep track of him.

Noted. You just need to know the rules are the rules. Finishing a check is legal.

But leaving your feet with a hit to the head is not. In fact, it's being emphasized this season. I agree with finishing, but you must remain on the ice.

  8. Yawn

Here's New Jersey's anti bullying law as an example:

    http://www.njleg.sta...500/3466_S1.PDF

    Here's some highlights-

"Provides that a school administrator who fails to initiate or conduct an investigation of an incident, or who should have known of an incident and fails to take action, is subject to discipline;"

"Provides that a school employee or contracted service provider must file a written report with the school principal within two days of observing or being made aware of an act of harassment, intimidation, or bullying;"

Yeah that's not aimed at administration or teachers. /sarcasm

I'm sorry, does an ACTUAL anti-bullying law count as good enough source material for you?

You're right it does start at home... that doesn't mean schools can let anything go under their watch.

If this is followed, the teachers will spend all their time filling out paperwork instead of prepping for actually teaching. I cannot tell you how much a teacher hears in the hallway walking to a class. Most of the time, a simple "knock it off" stops what can be stopped. All this paperwork is part of the reason I got out of teaching...but then again, I became a pilot with just as much, if not more, paperwork.

  9. No, I think it's completely different. Subways are operating in two dimensions. What happens if the train goes degraded? Stop the train. What happens if a jet goes degraded? There's no mechanical backup. So, even if the pilot is along for the ride 99% of the time he needs to be there for the 1% when the automation doesn't work as planned. The pilot is a 1 percenter. As a passenger I'll pay a little extra for pilot to be onboard. I'll avoid a pilotless aircraft at all costs.

  10. I agree... SNL's garbage now.

I just got back from another hiking trip on the Appalachian Trail a couple weeks ago. My brother had a canteen and other shit hanging off his pack, and it was making a racket (actually a good thing in bear country), and we both, almost simultaneously, said, "But be careful, there's quicksand!"

Much lulz were had... What I always thought was funny was that such a great skit never actually aired.

The more I see things like this and the things I saw when I was a high school teacher, the more the bad Mike Judge movie "Idiocracy" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiocracy) looks like the vision of the future.

  11. Well, "we" weren't really getting the Tucanos...they were being bought mostly to provide a training/light strike capability to a "friendly" nation (most of the first group to Iraq, I think). Therefore, getting or not getting them provides little or no difference in our national capability.

can we claim this as a $1bil cost savings by Big Blue over the span of the deal and keep (some more of) our planes?

  12. Sir, I think it's impressive that people seem to be more concerned with number of posts, rather than the egregious failure of leadership and integrity. This incident has been corroborated with several secondary sources and I'm sure there are plenty of other guys on here who can vouch, probably with significantly more details than I can.

If you have several secondary sources and are sure there are plenty of others here that can vouch, why do you have to ask if a RUMOR you heard is true? Just wondering

  13. I caught that too. If she was a dude and a bag wearer you guys would be singing praises about how she didn't play the game and still made it to the top.

    zb

if she was a dude and a bag wearer she wouldn't have been in past 2000 because she didn't have her boxes checked, sts

  14. Got it, thanks. Couple more questions, if you don't mind...

    1. On the BF, the procedures for Abort are THROTTLE - IDLE, BRAKES - AS REQUIRED, and FLAPS - CRUISE. Why cruise? For an aborted takeoff, wouldn't you want to make the aircraft as draggy as possible? Full flaps are practically like speed brakes on most aircraft I've flown. Sure, if you're going above 55 you might pop off the ground for a sec, but with the engine cut and full flaps, you'll drop back down damn quick and stay there.

    2. Similarly, for an engine malfunction it says to maintain 60 KIAS. Wouldn't you want to go to best glide (73) until you're on short final and you know you'll make the runway?

Also, I know you've mentioned a few times that no one cares how you were taught to fly before, the point of IFS is to teach you how to fly the AF way, and to just shut up and do it. I'm fine with that, but I'd like to know why I'm doing it that way. The AF does a lot of crap that doesn't make sense, but I'd like to think we're pretty damn good at flying. Do IP's, either at IFS or UPT, mind students asking "why" questions like those, as long as you don't argue and do it?

You put flaps up to minimize lift and put as much weight on the landing gear as possible as to not skid the tires. Brakes stop the airplane, not drag.

For the 60 KIAS, that BF (if i remember correctly) is for engine failure sufficient rwy remaining to land. 60 KIAS will set up for a landing attitude withe the flaps being lowered to the LDG position.
