  1. What about that little joint that had the best steak in the world? Everything else on the menu was nothing. They sold steak, crappy salad, and pop by the can. I can't remember the name of it, but 10 years ago it was the best steak I've ever paid for. It was in a trailer, and the grill was right by the door as you walked in.

Old Hickory. All they know is steak and potatoes.

  2. A couple of days ago we got a tip from a reader who said he'd sent a letter to Tim Cook asking "for help to unlock my wife's iPhone, because she is active duty military deploying to Afghanistan this week. I wanted her to have an unlocked phone in Afghanistan, so that she can get a local SIM and use it. I had tried both AT&T and Apple customer care for it, but no use. The made me go round robin between two support centers."

Worse, our friend Yash was called by someone at Apple to explain that his unlock request was denied because the 4S was still under contract. Apparently he read later that day about unlocks happening for out-of-contract phones, and called again to unlock a 3GS. As luck would have it, the rep "also unlocked my wife's 4S because they now have a new policy to do so for active duty military getting deployed."

So after reading the rumors yesterday I decided to dive back into our reader email and dig up what appears to be proof that AT&T is indeed unlocking iPhones that would ordinarily be denied IF that phone belongs to an active duty military person who is being deployed. Of course, once you are deployed you'll still need service, but that's another story.

  3. From what we've been told here at Vance, is it takes 6 hours minimum per aircraft to inspect for the problem, no counting time to fix the problem if found. So hopefully the maintenance guys here are pressing hard this weekend, but even still it could be a couple days before they are full up again.

The T-6 had a CFS issue around June 2010 when they grounded the whole fleet and made it sound like it was possibly weeks or months before studs would fly again esp to get some elusive part from the manufacturer. Everyone was back up the next week.

  4. The simple answer is no. While a rated board might score you slightly higher in the education sub-catagory for a highly desired technical degree, the overall impact of that on total score and selection would be miniscule. I know plenty of pilot selectes with non-tech degrees and engineering degrees. By the way, if there was any such issue, it would probably be for Computer Engineering majors, not Computer Science majors...the AF sees those as very different animals.

Computer Engineer and Pilot. I've done it. The AF pendulum is constantly swinging so it's hard to say what the best route is, but you might as well do something you enjoy and will excel at. Just make sure you excel in ROTC too and the flying hours will help your chances as well. Feel free to PM me.

  5. Day to show to IFS...?

Rip shows day X. DOSSIFS.COM shows in-processing day is X-1. Logic would dictate to show at Pueblo X-2, to be ready to in-process bright an early X-1, however if anyone (particularly IFS IPs) have data on that, I'm all ears. If it's on the DOSS website somewhere and I missed it, apologies in advance.

    Thanks.

That checks. My class date was for a Monday, I showed Sunday per the IFS website to inprocess, and I had arrived in Pueblo Saturday night so I could rest from the drive then inprocess bright and early on Sunday and have all day to get situated. Inprocessing will take you an hour at most but the sooner you get there the sooner you can hit the soft-serve ice cream.

  7. Does anyone know if you can cancel on-base housing once you've gotten it. As a married individual with a child I'm a little reluctant to stay in Capitol if I other options that may be better. Just wondering if when I get down there and talk to the people about housing if I can change my mind if I land in Capitol.

As long as you don't or haven't signed the lease yet, you should be good. Once you sign though you're committed for at least a year. Don't look at just the AHRN website, there's more out there.

  8. It's not a terrible program. They're trying to get everyone on the LTs on the same page and give us more tools to take into active duty, even for us pilot wannabes. The kickball thing you saw was probably Icarus, dodgeball on steroids. I thought the game would be gay but it ends up being a huge strategic game with a bunch of ROEs. It does feel a little bit like FT or ROTC though, lot of hand-holding.

  9. Thanks for the response. This class isn't a prerequisite for any classes, so would I still get a conditional if I get a D in the class but maintain > 2.5 semester GPA?

Can't say for certain (read into your university policies) but sounds like the answer is, NO. I had my share of D's but always maintained higher than 2.5 and never had to repeat a class. D is for diploma.

  10. Sorry to bump an old topic, but to expand on my problem:

    1) I don't know if this class would be considered as a core course, because I need to take either this class or another class to graduate. So if I get a D in this class, would it be considered as an F?

    2) If I do receive a conditional for academics this would be my third, and I would be investigated for disenrollment. This prospect scares the crap out of me considering I fill out my Form 53 next semester. Can anyone share their experiences with this?

Being a core class does not necessarily mean you have to retake. For instance, English is a core class but you can get a D and move on to the next class. Calculus I is a prereq for Calculus II and you cannot advance with a D in Cal I.

I know a buddy that was kicked out b/c of 3 conditionals, but also b/c he was just doing terrible in Mechanical Engineering overall. If your GPA is higher than the min each semester and overall you're ok, then don't stress (as much). Just get it together and bust your ass to pass (study, study groups, get help with hw, kiss your teachers ass, etc.)

  11. This is amazing. Anyone know if the "program" has to be registered as well as the school?

For instance, the University of Arkansas shows up, but the only program is their Operations Management (M.S.). My wife is working on becoming a teacher and her dept/program doesn't show up under the school. Does this matter?

  12. Just wanted to let ya know about another Master's program out there: Master of Science in Operations Management from the University of Arkansas. It's only 30 hours and you can complete it entirely online and in as little as one year. They also have sites at Hurlburt, Little Rock, and Memphis. It's a program mainly for military by military.

I won't be able to finish in a year, but am going to start next month. Hopefully I will be able to finish in the 6 year time frame and after UPT.

  13. Went to a commissioning this morning and they announced a recipient of an "honor graduate from rotc". Anyone know if this is just a rename of DG or whole separate award?

Most likely the same thing. As a Distinguished Graduate your cadre must submit a specific IMT Form recommending you. You're then racked and stacked and the top 10% of all ROTC commissionees earn the award. It's not a ribbon or anything else, it just goes into your permanent record. This past year there were over 2000 total graduates, so there were around 200 DG's.

  14. So what's the deal with who can commission you? Has to be an ACTIVE duty officer? Or can they be a retired officer? Any branch? If they are retired, should they be in uniform or anything?

per AIR FORCE INSTRUCTION 36-2006, the person appointing the oath must be active or retired.

    3. Administering the Oath. Persons being appointed or commissioned in the Air Force may take the oath before a:

3.1. Civil official authorized by law to administer oaths.

3.2. Commissioned officer of any component of any Armed Force of the United States (includes Reserve components), whether on active duty or retired. (This includes commissioned warrant officers of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.)

3.3. Warrant officer serving on active duty as an adjutant, assistant adjutant, acting adjutant, or personnel adjutant of a command.
