  1. Thats ing horseshit.  AF leadership has already stated they're having/going to have a problem producing & retaining qualified people for Sq command; now they're back to levying an artificial requirement for command that will drive more good people away.
Don't tell AFSOC, they still probably think IDE-in residence is the mark of leadership. Doesn't matter that the number of school slots in the command is less than CC/DO slots.

  2. Exactly this. There aren't many uniformed MWS guys in HQ AFSOC left (maybe a half dozen/MWS). It's a struggle between the bureaucracy, lots of change, and CC pet projects/good ideas. It doesn't help when the boss threatens to fire anyone who doesn't quickly implement his 50% more BS, 50% less FTU product. Ironically, it really seems to take a while to implement all this change when there's no uniforms left in the building to staff all these "priorities."

Also, I feel it for the 'favored' community getting kicked in the teeth with more with less taskings, picking up FTU training, and one of the core mission events considered non-essential.

  3. https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-air-force/2023/09/19/old-is-new-again-as-air-force-special-ops-branch-revamps-training/

Something, something, SOF truths about quality over quantity and mass production of SOF

    Some choice excerpts:
"Bauernfeind told Air Force Times that several other types of skills, like airdrops, aerial refueling and low-level flight, could become part of unit training rather than the initial pipeline. He said the standards used to decide whether airmen should move on in training will change accordingly."

"It’s trying to fast-track special operations flight school by sending students straight to AFSOC training units after they earn their wings on the T-6 Texan II. That cuts out the intermediate phase of flying the T-1 Jayhawk, which is heading into retirement after serving as the stepping stone to mobility and special operations aircraft.

That decision can shorten pilot training time by six months, AFSOC spokesperson Lt. Col. Becky Heyse said."

  4. I have a 0.014% chance of death IF I contract Covid...no logical risk management process says, “99.986% of success isn’t good enough, we need to lower the risk more!”

Covid has killed 619K Americans. Assuming the population of the country was 350M, that’s 0.177% of the entire US population. Out of the 34.5M recorded US cases, that’s 1.8% mortality rate (likely lower due to unreported cases).

There were 5479 reported deaths (to any cause, not necessarily related to vaccine) following a COVID vaccine out of 318M doses (0.0017%). CDC and FDA are required to look into each report. Of those 5K, so far only 3 are linked to the vaccine (1:100M). The CDC reports your chances of having a severe reaction is about 1:200k, or less.

I don’t think anyone is trying to say that these vaccines are absolutely perfect, but compare it to any other vaccine our society has commonly accepted as safe—take typhoid for example—and the efficacy of Covid-19 vaccines are pretty damn good. If we’re going to throw around numbers, let’s at least use actual data.

  5. Concur
Gripen turn around video, bit older but illustrates I think what you're talking about.  MX for effective dispersed basing and expeditionary recovery would need to be contained to what could be hauled / towed in a 5 ton or smaller vehicle, tools and equipment mostly one man carry and only need to be lifted to about 4-5 feet max.  Everything designed to quickly turn and scoot before being targeted while on the ground and static.

    Now that’s ACE
  6. And unlike the military, you are not expected to do the companies job to notify them when they’ve screwed up.

That’s mind blowing. Quite the opposite of our UDM throwing a shit fit every time someone isn’t green for 1 of 69 deployment requirements

  7. AMC preaches agile combat employment and full spectrum readiness yet still maintains their risk averse construct.  ACE will never be successful if the AMC 0-6s / GOs (AOC airlift directors) don’t delegate that authority.

  8. Maybe...but we don't generally relieve flying squadron commanders after a "pilot error" Class A mishap.  There's gotta be more to the story than a single iPad ingested by an engine off-station.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the “not previously reported” part of the article. Either there’s a trend item or a failure to report.
  9. I've seen that in numerous places this past year.  If you want to see some unique procedures check out my home airport 2R4.  Airspace issues galore (right hand patterns required on 18, left hand on 36, non-standard 900' pattern thanks to Navy airspace to the north), and military bases all around...all done via CTAF.

That’s a fun airport. With the banner tows, navy helos, GA and Elgin range I’m surprised how few incidents are.
