Wasn't that the pre-Pueblo IFS (not all the way to CSEL/250 hours, but PPL level)? Even with a syllabus it would need a lot of standardization to prevent students from picking up bad habits from CFIs.

Yes. It was called "IFT." Wasn't the precursor to IFT, T-3s at Hondo? Like a dog chaising it's tail.

At no point in pilot training was I ever afraid of a green suit IP. (3 years ago) They knew there was a fine line and if they hurt feelings to much aka swearing at a student they would being have a talk with the CC. There were some crusty old civilian sim instructors that would absolutely destroy you and your entire life, they gave 0 fucks and knew it was about impossible to fire them.   Couple of them really knew how to

put the fear of god in you.

Experiences vary wildy. I saw many students with "hurt feelings" get washed out.

Very hard to say. If your B.S. GPA is 3.0-3.5, I would definitely begin work on the masters after UPT, of course. Online is fine.
Doing well in pilot training trumps getting a masters any day of the week.

And if you graduated with > 3.5?

Then it comes down to what Muscle said.

Thanks for the info. How necessary do you think a masters is if my B.S is in Aero Eng and my second B.S is in Applied Math? Is getting an engineering masters online vs in class detrimental or do typical boards don't care?

There is no way a current upt stud out of phase 2 could go directly to the B course. Unless they're a prior atp or what have you. They can barely read an approach plate much less fly a multi leg mission. They're used to a very responsive and forgiving plane that it's easy to get back from mistakes in. And if it's into Fighters they've got less than 20 hours of formation flying under their belt before being shipped to iff.

There is something to be said for time in the seat and I don't think there is anyway that you can effectively shorten it to 6 months in the Texan without severely handicapping the end product.

Yep. These students might not fail out of the new style of UPT, but they will most certainly fail out of the B-course and go to an FEB.

I am starting UPT in March but one of my long term goals in the AF is to become a test pilot. Reading this thread makes me realize that acceptance into TPS comes down to what AF needs are at the time. Aside from the typical be the best at your job, for those of you who have gone to TPS, any general career advice on things I can do position myself as a better candidate when the time comes?

There are a lot of variables you can't control when applying for TPS, but control what you can. When able, start work on an engineering masters. If you have poor grades in some areas, considering attempting to retake those classes online. Apply early and apply often. Many, many people get in on their second or third try. Waivers for # of flight hours do get approved. So if you don't meet the minimums, don't let that discourage you from applying. Waivers for time in service are much more difficult to get approval for.

It's all about S.A. on your event timing.  And this should be briefed early.

Crack the beer at the earliest possible point... THEN take the phone call from the caller ID that says "SQ/DO"... THEN say "Unable".

    Amateurs...

Hmmm... my advice on cracking the beer would be more difficult.  But you'd be legendary if you used it in this case.

You guys didn't carry a tube of beer for just such an ocassion?

The problem is that too many people have been convinced that the Constitution is something that can only be interpreted by a Federal judge, or at least by someone with a JD and a background in ConLaw. In reality, the Constitution was written by farmers and merchants, not one of whom went to law school, and it was meant to be a document for the people.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Founding_Fathers_of_the_United_States#Education

Most went to college, several were lawyers, and only 4 were self-taught or had little formal education.

Also, the founding fathers created the judiciary branch so that lawyers could interpret the constitution for the lay people....

That's the beautiful thing about being a free man living in a liberal democracy: it isn't about "need".

The whole point is that free citizens are allowed to pursue whatever makes them happy (within the limitations of not violating the rights of others) without having to garner the approval or permission or validation of any other person or organization.

"Because I want to" is all the "need" anyone requires.

Yeah, but there is a line. You aren't allowed to own your own fighter and an inventory of Mk 82s either... as much fun as that would be.

I don't think banning bump stocks would do much anyways. You can bump fire with a belt loop, and you can make minor mods to turn a semi-auto AK-47 into full auto (sort of..).

In general they've come a long ways in the last 5 years. A lot of the old E6 guys are gone and there's a lot more Hornet influence in the community. The HVAA mindset is nearing death.

Some squadrons are better than others, but I wouldn't say that mindset is near death though.

Am I the only person that is saddened by the fact that social media and public shaming are pretty much the only ways to get the 4-stars to address toxic AF management?

Yeah the IG system is broken and you can't trust anyone to do the right thing anymore.

    What a shit show.

This comment is better reserved for What's wrong with the AF thread.

The IG system does seem to be way broken. Way too much good ole boy network and not enough impartial investigations.

Ah the ultra high fast flyer. DCA red air just got a whole lot more fun.

I was not a school select off my board, but I am not a fan of the change.  The AF is notoriously bad when it comes to giving feedback.  SEL status is one of the few ways in which the AF did a half-decent job of managing expectations.  If you got it, you're going to school.  If you didn't, you're going to have to bust out your kneepads if you want to go.   Under the new system, everybody is going to need their kneepads.

Ultimately, this change being good or bad will now rest at the wing level. There will be commander's who do great things with it, and there will be those who royally screw it up. At least with a board, it was the sum input of all of your raters up to that point. Heaven help you if you aren't the anointed one by your current leadership.

I thought you were talking about Salvatore Giunta at first. Same deal.

He stated repeatedly that A1 likes us all as 17D's, because they can just throw us around so much easier into assignments.  Someone actually said "A1 got us into this fiasco."  There's little/no concern for past experience or training once you're a Capt.  He said that as a 11F he was always an 11F, and up through Col could count on staying near, if not in, a flying position.  It's just not the same for us "cyber opertors."  We can do 2 17S ops tours (DCO/OCO) and then go to 17D staff, then go be a 17D DO at a traditional Comm Sq, and then go back to staff in a 17D slot, then go back to 17S Ops as a Sq CC...on a completely different weapon system on which initially qualified.  There is no staying qualified on the weapon system you were previously on.  There's kinda discussion for that with the Comm Sq of the Future, but that's for DCO.  OCO... there's nothing.  Where do you think a large portion of our true operators (in the legit sense) are?

Classic bureaucrat concerned only with solving the bureaucracy's own problems.
