  1. I looked into buying from AAFES while deployed. You pay way too much for the car. It's better to go through USAA or get a True Car price report and negotiate with a dealer. I ended up custom ordering a Mustang through my local dealer and got it about 4K cheaper than AAFES. The exception is if you want a special edition car like a GT500. Dealers typically charge over MSRP for special edition cars and you have to buy what they have in stock. AAFES sells the special edition cars below MSRP so it is a way better deal.

  2. Dems are claiming GOP plant. That would be the only remotely plausible theory at this point, though they've also played that card in a couple of South Carolina elections where the "preferred" guy didn't win as of late.

If he was a plant wouldn't someone on the right helped him campaign (suggest ads, banners, pins, anything)? It doesn't seem as if he did anything a normal politician would do to get elected.

  3. Inside joke...?

CJCS visited CHS yesterday. Base theater is packed. He talks for a few minutes then asked if anyone had any questions. ROE was we were to ask anything we wanted. Some legit questions were asked then a young REMF Lt whined about not having BK in Kandahar. Then a SSgt asked why "they" denied her claim for TA, which resulted in her having to pay $500 for the class, yada yada yada. ADM Mullen asked her who "they" were? Her reply was (insert attitude) "The Charleston AFB education center" immediately you could hear the sighs and gasps in the crowd. Absolutely hilarious.

Edit: To add that the SSgt is in the Trans Squadron.

  4. Attention Airmen:

The CJCS is probably not the person to bitch to when the base education office denies your TA application for your underwater basket weaving class. I know he opened the floor for questions, but seriously, WTF?

I thought that was classic. I was laughing my ass off as soon as she started talking... There's a reason you're driving a bus, stick with that.

  5. Okay, normally I wouldn't share this but since this is Base Ops and not some generic website where any fool can peek in I will share some of what I can with an in-brief.

Chem-trails are real. There are a bunch of us who have been tasked with spreading the goo across the heavens for a variety of purposes, none of which you have a need to know about. However, in the interest of maintaining good op-sec, I'm passing on some SA on the program.

First--all your airline buddies are in-briefed. The way to tell is ask them for their ATP. If it says "English proficient", they are in the loop. That whole English thing was a good cover story put together by the CIA with the FAA back about two years ago. Having some of us in the program and some guys out of the program was causing too many problems on layovers. Streamlining the program and bringing everyone over to the black side just made things easier.

Next--about 80% of military strat airlift and tanker guys are in the program. I'm not sure of the exact criteria they use to select who they want, but for whatever reason they don't select guys with red hair or a lot of freckles. I'm not sure on the whys of that...

About 45% of the fighter force is in-briefed. That means if you aren't about half your squadron probably is. What you may not know is we BY LAW have to reveal we are in the program under certain cirucmstances. These circumstances are A) it must be in a discrete squadron function such as a pilot meeting or roll call event and B) you must ask the question exactly like this: "I have a legimitate need to know and I insist based on the rule of Monstanto and Dow that you reveal to me more about the Chem-trail program..." At this point those of us in the program have no choice but come clean and in-brief you so you can hip-pocket this for your next meeting if you are curious.

I will probably have my ATP revoked for sharing this but since the program tries to avoid being highlighted I am not concerned about losing my airline job. I never would have told you this when I was still flying Eagles but since I had my fini flight back in 07 I thought it was a good time to share.

In heavies we call it a "Banner Cert" I've said way too much...

  6. I went to Field Training with the dude whose tattoo started this thread. He's at Columbus right now. Maybe he's a cool dude, maybe he's not. His tattoo is not cool.

    .

You said you went to field training with him. Is he cool or not? You're not Charlie or Mike are you? Just kidding, but has anyone asked him about that horrible decision on his arm?

  7. Dear God:

If you should feel the need to shine the light of good fortune on me in the future and allow me the honor of command, please ensure that you instill in me some humility, approachability and credibility even when those in charge appear to lose all three. Give my troops the strength to call me out when its required. Give the squadron commanders the clarity of purpose and audacity to collect all MQFs, grade them, correct them and forward them up with a "100%" for all, a smile and middle finger to the man - to protect their troops from the stupidity rolling down from on-high. Grant them the balls to stand up for their men, not hang them out to dry.

    Chuck

"You C-17 guys, buncha cowboys..." in my best Russian accent

    Amen

  8. It sure as hell is.

That's what the best callsigns are about...the thing that is unusual or unique and funny about you. If you are unfortunate enough to make a mistake you should own it as your ######ing name for the rest of your life, because it is funny.

    This ain't no puss game.

Maybe it's the herbivore in me. That's a great idea to give him a callsign. Unfortunately, we don't do callsigns in the C-17. So where do we draw the line? If they had all died that day would it still be as funny? My only point from the beginning was that we all have folks that have screwed up in the jet. He won't learn anything by being ridiculed for the rest of his career. I think Zrooster shacked it. We haven't had any issues dodging potholes in Q-West :M16a2:

FWIW, there is a bigger issue with the AC back flying again. I don't think he should be in the jet. Our leadership is more focused on PME, AAD, SARC, MEO, PFT, Blues Monday, etc. It has gotten out of hand. More with less will only work for so long.

Like you said, this aint no puss game.

  9. If by "up there" you mean where we can taxi without using full power on the engines, then the view's just fine.

Or how about the view from a hilltop in Jackson Hole or Puerto Rico or maybe on an extended HAR track in OEF. I'm a prior Herk guy, I had at least one friend on board of each of those crashes who was either seriously injured or killed. My only point is this sounds more and more like a C-17 bashing thread when the Herk community has suffered their fair share of losses due to pilot error. I'm all for good fun, I'm not sure bagging on a guy that made a mistake that he will carry for the rest of his career is the best place for humor.

  10. Do those newfangled computers now tell you when the gear is down and locked?

The worst are hearing C-17's trying to contact Manas Command Post from Kabul every five minutes.

Wow, awesome. Good to know the C-17 community is the only one to suffer a class A as a result of crew error. How's the view from up there? :notworthy:

  11. Probably, but he'll also probably be allowed to keep his retirement. I'm pretty sure that the Air Force won't really punish him...he'll simply not be allowed to advance. I think the only justice will be what the State of Nevada dishes out. I hope I'm wrong.

I’m not condoning the punitive actions against flag officers. Has anyone here known anyone kicked out of UPT for a DUI or any other formal school? That is a career/dream ender for many, even if they get to continue their military career. I would argue that the 4-star he reports to thinks ending his career is punishment enough.

  12. Did a search for this but didn't find anything.

I'm 24, single, male, pilot select. I won't be starting OTS for another 6 months so I want to get a dog to have throughout my career now. Anyone have any recommendations on the best breed for a single service member like myself? I'm pretty athletic, so I want a larger, agile animal, intelligent and a good companion. But he also needs to be able to cope with change and new situations well, because of all the moving around.

Any of you guys got dogs you find are really good with your lifestyle?

Sounds like a crappy deal for the dog. Wait until you're done with training or until you're married to get a dog.

    My .02

  13. Hey everyone,

I finally have my application package together and I'm ready to send it out. Does anyone have any information on the Reserve squadrons at Charleston AFB? Are they hiring? Any POCs? I'm in Atlanta, furloughed ASA guy, would love to be apart of a Charleston C-17 squadron. Thanks.

I think the 315th has been letting folks go, they are a little top heavy from what I've heard. If you aren't already a C-17 guy it is going to be really tough to get into the unit. Especially now that the AF has to let 5000 go. If any C-17 pilots are asked to leave I would suspect they'll be knocking on the 315th's door.
