  1. Raccoons don't take selfies.

"Nebraska football player bitten by raccoon while trying to take selfie with it

A Nebraska football player is recovering after being attacked by an apparently camera-shy raccoon.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that Husker defensive end Jack Gangwish spotted the animal on the side of the road Wednesday night as he was driving north of Lincoln and decided to take a picture of himself with the raccoon using his cellphone.

When he approached the animal, it attacked, biting the 21-year-old Gangwish on the calf.Gangwish killed the animal with a crescent wrench he grabbed from his truck.

Authorities are testing the raccoon for rabies."

  2. TSP doesn't charge when you do a roll over in conjunction with retirement or separation. My TSP was a traditional IRA. In order to convert it, Vanguard rolled my TSP funds into a traditional IRA, then it was converted to a Roth. The way it was explained to me was that was the simplest to create an above bar trail for the IRS.

  3. Anyone have experience separating and rolling over your TSP into a regular IRA or 401k?

I rolled my TSP traditional over to a Vanguard Roth this year. It was pretty straight forward. Setup an account with Vanguard. Request a transfer of the funds with TSP. Once the funds transferred I converted to a Roth. The final statement from TSP reflected exactly how much was tax free. It took about six weeks for TSP to give me my money. I think you can only do this if you separate or retire. Be aware if you do what I did, convert from traditional to Roth that you just generated X amount of income and you can potentially put yourself in a higher tax bracket. It was the the right time for me, YMMV.

For a nutty but thouroghly committed liberatarian like myself, these "free cities" hold some real promise. If they do end up panning out (I have my doubts the the governments involved will keep thier promises to keep out) I will at the very least spend some of my time in one of these places.

I was stationed at Soto Cano for a year. Honduras is an awesome, but dangerous place to live. I would never live where they are talking about building these cities. You'd probably be much safer setting up a town in Camp Bastion or FOB Shank.

  5. Aw, hell...

Just to note the XDSpistol.com and Springfieldrecall.com websites don't seem to be working correctly. Call Springfield with your serial number to confirm whether your pistol is affected by this or not...

Dumb question to follow. I've never had to ship a pistol. Any ideas on the correct way to bring it up to FedEx? Should I put it in the case or just bring the pistol? Do they have a box and packaging for such things? I've tried calling Springfield but their phone lines are consistently busy these days. Thanks.

  6. Pallets of street justice & kinetics you can't talk about? You must have done the super spec ops C17 fighter pilot upgrade, sorry for questioning you Dr. Badass.

Tried to make a joke. I missed the mark. Community standard. My apologies. My point was I'd rather deliver something, whether it's cargo for a MAF pilot or bombs/bullets for a CAF pilot. Tankers support both the MAF and CAF for those actions.

I didn't say too much did I Tonka?

  7. So would I, but you definitely won't be in either of these airframes.

The only 'possible' exception might be SOLL II...

I've done some cool things in the C17 ( not patting myself on the back, I'm not the only one). None of which I can talk about and only about half of those "support" missions were SOLL II.

Haha, if you weren't based out of Charleston, I would be 100% convinced that you were trolling instead of 75%.

    Maybe a little, haha.

Tankers actually support objectives being actioned regularly, airlift/AD rarely plays a direct support role in fighting (at least how you guys do it). Both are important, but it's folly to assume you're always more relevant. Thats true for all of us.

Tankers also support the support airframes. I'm not bad mouthing tankers, there's something to be said for relevance. Direct delivery of anything (pallets of street justice, kinetics, etc.) is more appealing to me than giving everyone else a top off.

I always felt closer to the battle in the -135 vs the -17, but still pretty far away. I've seen the fighters I just gave gas to peel off and drop bombs on Fallujah, I've had a lot of fighters ask me to move my orbit closer to their TIC so they can spend more time strafing. Opening night for OIF was pretty exciting with a wall of fighters on my wing ready to push into Iraq. A lot of the -17 guys I flew with seemed to think the war revolved around them. Granted I wasn't an airdropper in the 17.

I felt pretty relevant on the opening days of OIF too. Flying into "J" fields to deliver SOF assets to the fight. I wish I could have been in a C17 for HUMRO.

Is this going to turn into a tanker vs airlift pissing contest??? I thought the MAF was above that

    No

  8. I really appreciate the info from everyone. I'm thinking my final list will be:

    KC-10 : Travis

    KC-10 : McGuire

    C-17 : McChord

    C-17 : Charleston

Unless anyone has a sudden burst of insight they wish to share? : ]

I've been to over 150 countries in ten years in the C17. I've done airdrop in three continents. Oh and if Travis and McGuire are what float your boat, we are there too. Comparing 10 and 17 bases who cares? If you want to burn holes in the sky and support everyone else's mission, good for you. Somebody has to do it.

  9. Be careful how you view the time you have left in the AF if you don't have an established DOS or retirement, because I don't think it's a magic 13-month window for retirement. You have to ask and get your retirement date approved. They could extend it for a remote/365.

The screwed up AF method requires you to first submit a request that confirms you are retirement eligible which can take up to 10 business days. Only after that comes back can you actually submit your retirement request.

My experience and one of a buddy was that once they saw you submitted the first request they'd take you off the list. Apparently they've been burned by this (having people not actually submit the second request) so they almost wouldn't accept that either (current as of last week) but he was 2nd on the list so they accepted it. There was no warning that you are getting close or anything. They could have easily pushed the retirement date back until after return from the 365.

Not completely true. Once you submit a request for retirement your assignment is put on hold pending your retirement approval. Again, if you are greater than 12 months and your handed a 365 your only options are either take the remote or 3 day opt and separate.

  10. The most recent RIF did not look at officers with more than 15 years of service.

Hoss I believe you're correct in reference to the 365.

My personal experience. I was handed an assignment at 18.5 years. Since the ADSC took me beyond 20 they couldn't make me take the assignment. This wasn't spelled out on the RIP. there was an alpha numeric code that the personnelist recognized as a 7 day opt and retire code. I ended up setting a retirement date at 20 years and 7 day opting from the assignment. Bottom line, if you're close to retirement ask MPF what your actual options are. If you don't like their answer have them speak with AFPC policy branch for the official policy.

  11. PSA has a sale going on for Vortex Red-Dot's: $120 after applying the coupon code and they will apply the discount to multiple orders. Pretty awesome deal for those looking for a more inexpensive red-dot at a solid value.

ETA: They also have $400 PSA complete uppers. Here's the link with all their deals:

PSA has a decent sale going on today. I picked up an XDS for $529. I'm sure there have been better deals on the XDS, but I haven't seen one.

  12. Today, I finally got to shoot the Springfield loaded 1911 I purchased at a gun show last weekend. All I can say is wow. Very impressed with this pistol. OBTW, no loopholes, everyone was running background checks for gun purchases.
