  2. Everytime I drive on to Portsmouth Shipyard, me/the veh is saluted. I know better then to salute back, but what the hell do I do?

I asked my husband.. he told me not to wave, that it could be considered a "salute." He suggested saying "Carry on"--But, to ME, that's a command.. and I shouldn't be commanding them to do anything--Make sense?

Another thing: The Gate Guards at the Shipyard are civiallian--Why do they salute in general?! I understand that most of them are prior military, but I just don't get it...

I feel ackward when they salute, and I just give them the deer in the headlights look..

    Thanks Guys!

Just say thanks and go on about your buisness. It's not THAT big a deal, and the guy is saluting the sticker, not the car, and not you. It's just a guy doing his job and paying respect to a policy that he is required to. IMHO you should enjoy the fact that we "the military" still uphold our traditions and pride in the manner that we do. Don't sweat it.

  3. Like Fury220 said...RTF syllabus. It's your job. TIMS is great, but you should know what is expected even when the computer doesn't work.

Sounds harsh, but when I was teaching UPT, sometimes you just couldn't finish the gradesheet right away. Find another means to mission plan.

  4. Look, I'm not turning this into a pissing contest just want to clear somethings up.

It's a bit more complex than that. Is there a gun, sure, but there are things that have never been put on a 130 before that are going on our birds. Its less, 'lets take an MC squadron and turn them into an AC squadron' and more 'here is a brand new concept, lets develop it'. There will still be airdrop...and AFSOC/CC is still trying to get TF for the W. Hardly turning MC dudes into just 'gunship dudes'. I can't go into any more detail. Again I simply want to clear things up, I know there are alot of rumors running around.

Holy crap dude!!! Get over yourself.

  5. I am a Navy veteran, Air Force brat and avid enthusiast for airpower of all branches. I was privelged to serve in the Navy as an enlisted aircrewman in helicopters, and everything I learned there I have applied to how I conduct myself as a civilian and as an airline pilot now. I grew up as a "70's" child looking thru fences, standing on the flightline or riding my bike to the end of the runway. My heroes were all pilots, mostly Air Force at the time. The Viet Nam era was winding down when I started high school, and I recall vividly the POWs returning from North Viet Nam. I read about the F-105 pilots that flew over North Viet Nam, and the obstacles that they faced beyond just ingressing, attacking and egressing. Not only were they fighting for their lives and their strike team members lives, but also fighting the very leadership that ordered the strikes from the White House on down the chain-of-command.

The point of this message is a question...Why is that the United States Air Force has NEVER honored any Air Force personnel with the re-naming an Air Force Base in their honor? This is a travesty in my opinion and exacerbated by the naming of Creech AFB and Onizuka AFB in recent years. Brave and honorable men that served their country with distinction. However, we have ignored Viet Nam as a place where USAF warriors fought and died. Perhaps many people don't know, don't care or don't want to know who First Lieutenant Karl Richter was. Well, I do and I remember alot of his comrades. This is the way I was raised and the way I am raising my daughter. We enjoy the freedoms and way of life because of people like Lt. Richter.

The opportunity exists to re-name a number of Air Force bases to honor Lt. Richter. Altus, Minot, Little Rock, Grand Forks, etc... I am going to start a petition to try and honor our USAF Viet Nam veterans. The precedent is set by the Navy naming Destroyers for it's fallen in all wars up to including Iraq and Afghanistan. Please foward me your support via this forum to proceed with this effort. I am just one person, but I have been pondering this for a long time and I finally decided to act. Thank you for your attention...

Dude, outstanding observation for sure. But here's the scoop. As you yourself mentioned, the Navy names Boats after fallen sailors. And that is a Naval tradition, but we aren't very well going to start naming airplanes after downed airmen. Additionally, there aren't very many Air Force bases to go around. Certainly Lt. Richter has a noteworthy story, but so do hundreds, if not thousands of others. So while this is a great idea, it just can't be accomodated. How do you deem Vietnam to be a more or less important conflict than all the others? There are many AFB's named after fallen airmen by the way. But many of them are named after folks who died during the formative years of Air Force history. Hopefully that all makes sense.

  6. I can't count the times my class rolled that thing to downtown W.F., and even Dallas once. Thanks to one of my good bro's for rebuilding the fuel injection after we trashed it. Yeah, if that shortbus could talk.....

  7. I got the ERAU Masters while actively flying, but it was during an AETC tour. You will find however that ERAU and its extended campus instructors are quite flexible with students and their military schedules. I didn't deploy while I was getting the degree, but I certainly missed plenty of class due to late/night flying. You should go ask the question at your on-base ERAU office, because I am sure deployments are nothing new to them. As for the comment about classes only being offered during certain semesters...sure, but with a little prior planning (you can inquire as to what is coming up in the next year or so), it shouldn't be a problem. Good luck!

  8. Not sure about Vance rules, I was a Sheppard guy in UPT. The dorms however makes your life alot easier because you will be crazy busy, and being that close to work helps mitigate things like being late due to traffic and such. Plus you will be around lots of other students, which helps with studying. Your call of course, but I think it helped keep me focused. I was single in those days of course.

  9. May be able to make it this year. If so, it will be my first time out. Let's get a showing this year folks...screw the economy, lets get some airplanes in the air and on the ramp!

  10. I get a great rate through Progressive on a 08 Harley Night Train.

Yeah, I used them to ensure my Sportster 1200C as well. But realize that rates are SIGNIFICANTLY different for a sportbike. I was blown away when I found out that a new rider between 18-25 can pay as much as 2 grand a year for insurance!

  11. However, I took a 2008 Yamaha R1 out for a spin today and good god it was awesome beyond belief - 139bhp at the crank in a bike that weighs 177kg

    edit for retarded spelling

Now THATS a machine. My sense of self-preservations says to get a little more experience before jumping on a rocketship like an R1 however. Great picture Pete, what do you ride day to day?

PS - fou, I use Progressive because USAA sent me that direction after explaining that they do not do bike insurance. No complaints so far, and their rates are good.

  12. For all those newbie riders out there, I just bought a 2009 Ninja 650r yesterday afternoon. Previously I rode a Sportster 1200 which was my first bike. I am one of those guys who thinks stepping into sport riding should be approached carefully. So I got what I thought to be a fairly conservative choice both in price and performance. The bike turned out to exceed my expectations in alot of ways and I haven't even gone north of 4K RPM yet! Its a comfortable ride and very, VERY easy to ride. Great choice...with 2 years on a cruiser, I had NO IDEA what I was missing.

  13. Seems grossly unfair, and is at the very least not the way to thank a man who has put everything on the line in defence of his country.

No doubt there is more to this story. I have heard rumors from Strike Eagle guys I work with in my current assignment, but I won't speculate. He probablly got what he deserved though.

  14. I think you are right regarding the Administration.

I don't think you'll get any additional money for either more F-22s or new flavors of Eagles.

You're probablly right brick, but being realistic, it seems more likely that something like this could be justified, for existing Strike Eagles and such. The current administration is only gonna see the dollar signs IMHO.
