How much time did you ask off? How did they informally tell you?

Asked for 4 months off UPT with just under 365 days to GI bill to reserves, with approvals all the way up so far and a letter of intent to hire.

Not conifdent in the "approval" though. It was the standard friend of a friend of a friend.

ISR called AFPC contact who called SAF/PC contact and relayed back, but I feel it's as "that one will get approved with all the supporting info".

Its aggravating that the new process went from somewhat streamlined of 1-5 weeks to now 12-16 weeks.

any recent approvals? AFPC is now saying 8-12 weeks at SAF/PC.. after 12 weeks I'm guessing they will just say 12-16 weeks and stop calling

Got informally told approved but that it will be 12-15 weeks  for "official approval". It's been there 5 weeks.

House sold, reserves hired, waiting on "official approval" so my family and I can get on with our life.....

Spreading to part of the CAF - AFGSC copied the AMC crossflow program for bombers. Some of the guys coming over as Capts do OK, but dropping B-52 O-6 leadership without combat experience into B-1 command positions is another matter.

    What problems have you seen?

Seriously asking. Not trying to start the standard bomber on bomber hate fest, has there a problem with B-1 units run by B-52 guys?  As you know, B-52 wings also swapped leadership, and I for one am extremely happy with the "progress" we are making in crossflow in our communities.

As the bone and buff pogo between AORs, having mid and upper level leadership with experience in both locations can, in my mind, help us all advance. Bones in the Pacific, WG/CCs that have been SQ/CCs there (plus a shit hot SQ/CC leading the charge who developed the current CBP).

BUFFs in CENTCOM, great B-1 WG/CCs that were SQ/CCs through that.

To me, the biggest down fall is that the CGO level exchange should have been going on for far longer in order to share/populate good ideas from both communities and highlight/question bad ones with the outside perspective this crossflow provides.

    Thoughts?

Yeah, seriously asked at my base.

SSgt xx: excuse me sir, where is Capt xx doing that thing?

    me: what thing?

SSgt xx:  makes a "takeoff" motion with her hands a few times

    me: flying?

    SSgt xx: yeah! That's it!

    me: the runway

    SSgt xx: where is that?

There is a ton of confusion on PF/PF with the GI Bill, and no one knows what the hell they are talking about but I've been down this road.  I have it in writing (MyPers Contact, it works well) from several offices that you can't Palace Front with an outstanding GI Bill ADSC.  Data points are below, it's BS but this is what I was told, corroborated by multiple people at AFPC:

    • Even though the document you signed to transfer benefits states that it is a "service commitment", AD Air Force "interprets" it as an ADSC.  Everyone else, including the VA sees it as an agreement of any kind of service (even part-time Guard) but mother AF says otherwise.  The worst part about this is that it's "a policy" for it to be an ADSC, no regulation specifically prescribes it.
    • You may have been told (before signing; I was) that you could simply reverse the transfer of benefits and thus revert to the previous ADSC: this is false.  Unless you can get it in writing that you were miscounselled by an official, it is irrevocable even if the transferees haven't used any benefits.

This info was given to me and confirmed with the PC and PF offices, the Transfer of Education Benefits Office (TEB), the AFPC Help Line, and (pretty sure, don't have it right here) the ADSC shop.  Reserve Personnel Center says to go ahead and Palace Front, my (lousy) in-service recruiter said same but the AD AF sees it otherwise.  That being said, if you are approved PC you can continue to serve out the VA "service commitment" for the transfer without re-starting, but they have to approve (rubber stamp) that.  If someone has a silver bullet please advise, I hope I'm wrong somehow.  That's what I've been told, some people along the way said otherwise (have that in writing too) but it's a case of clown-assed shoes not knowing their own regulations and policies.  Wasted a lot of time trying to teach them, no joy.

Side note and further background: I was told the PC approval process involves a periodic board of 5: they all review your case and vote, majority rules.  This likely explains why some packages are approved in weeks and others take months.  They advertise 6-8 weeks, but my latest correspondence says 3-12 weeks.  The PC office and others recommend keeping the memo away from personal sob stories and try to sell them on why the early release (STS) is good for the AD AF.  Examples might include no PCS cost, going to a Guard/Reserve training billet that helps AD, etc.  Be sure to include a hiring letter of intent from your gaining unit too.

    Thanks for all the data.

For the MFR, I'm going to a TFI FTU so should be able to spin that to help out as long as I don't get fragged by GI Bill.

They had to force the B-1 dudes to go to BUFFs.  I don't know how thrilled the BUFF guys were to come over to the B-1, but they seemed pretty motivated.

Yeah I think overall it's considered a great deal by buff drivers.

Don't know why you bone guys aren't amped about things like Minot and nuke?? (Sarcasm)

Yeah, I had a reserve hiring letter and a letter of admission for grad school.

Speaking of the hiring letter, my reserve unit said they just fill in a position number when I submit my 1288. Recruiter agreed. Am I missing anything with that by not having an actual hiring letter?

Also, any luck recently with requests around the below stats?

requesting 4 months UPT and 12 months TEB to the reserves. Will not be supported by base leadership, but may have AFPC buy in.

Contiplating sucking it up for the last 4 months of UPT ADSC to give myself the best odds.

    Thanks

Heard a rumor today (allegedly from the lips of the AMC/CC) that FY17 ARP is going to be 35k for 11Fs, 34k for everyone else. Can't make this shit up.

Hah! That's hilarious to take one last discriminative jab. Guess what? The airline bonus is well beyond that.

Did they enjoy it? There's a three year accompanied LNO gig they just sent out (probably what pawnman referenced earlier). We went ahead and put our names in.

Also with the tipping over do houses have backup oxygen generators in case you end up upside down. Guess we should all get a scuba cert....do they mame masks that fit 3 month olds? /s

It was the previous wing weapons officer and he loved it, but was really ready to leave by the end of the tour. Island fever, busy job, and not flying I think we're getting to him.

Hopefully you were were able to get out there with the 34th to get the lay of the land.

Can't ask for better leadership than the guys out there now so it should be a great work environment.

Feel free to PM. I have 3 tours there with the last being a year ago.

How's the housing situation out there for families?

My friends out there have rented hous s off base and they were not that bad. Great view depending on where you go. I mean, with a 15x35 mile island that's about to tip over, you always have an ocean view.

I have seen the ACC squadrons hire about 6-9 contractors to works in scheduling, stan eval, mobility, and other support areas. It has had an immediate impact from what I've seen. A lot more pilots being pilots, and a lot more dudes and dudettes in the vault!

I don't want to derail this thread, but I have not seen contractors getting hired in my community. Who has been able to get them? My assumption would be fighter units since they have been the focus of leadership but curious if we can expect that coming down the road. An actual CSS and some contractors would make a world of difference.

Is this just an AF effort or does Fingers have DoD behind him? It sounds like the former...if so, I can imagine the response from the FAA. While he's at it, why not ask to move the retirement age up to 70. That would have more of an immediate relief on hiring than anything else.

Don't mention the retirement age again. They probably haven't thought of that yet.

So, I did a quick search (sorry if it wasn't in-depth enough)...but there are apparently two-year, accompanied positions opening in Guam for B-1 folks.  I'm curious what info the forum has regarding Guam.  Is this something I should jump on immediately, avoid like the plague, or something in between?  I'm married, with an 11-year-old.  I've only been in flying positions, both in the line squadron and the FTU, my whole career.  I'm told the Andersen assignment is also flying, but I also know B-1s will only be there for a small time during the two years this assignment would span.

My info is based on 3 deployments there. I would take it over Minot and don't think it would be a bad 2 year gig. The friends I have stationed there love it.  If your into diving, it's some of the best you will find. The ocean there is around 80 deg year round, and the weather is pretty predictable (85 and humid with a chance of rain).

Good golfing, excellent caving, and countless jungles to explore if you are into that.

Base is pretty good and majority of the island is either Air Force or navy.

Toward the end I assume you would get some island fever, but you can catch hops around the pacific to break that up.

The island itself is about 35x13 miles and may tip over with any additional Marines, but if you are adventurous, you can find things to do.

There is a touristy area (tumon bay) and the island as a whole is kinda like Hawaii and a shitty part of Mexico had a baby. Very few radio stations, the speed limit is 35 max, broken down cars litter the island, and boonie dogs and chickens roam freely.

locals, like many places, some hate us and some love us.

All in all, if they stood up a buff sq there I would take a 2 year there.

I hope this helps. Feel free to pm.
