  1. Definitely an MBA--without an advanced business degree, you don't stand a chance of getting into TPS! It's already competitive enough, make sure you set yourself apart and get an MBA.

An MS (aero, mech, EE, physics, whatever) means more than an MBA (underwater basket weaving) to the TPS board--an MS is specifically "desired" for engineer applicants. MBAs are better than nothing, though. Both pilots/navs and engineers can get in without a masters (easier for rated dudes to pull that off). There's also a program where they send you to AFIT for a year, you go to TPS for a year, and you wind up with two MS degrees (from both AFIT and TPS).

  2. Anyone heard anything about the latest TPS board? Its been a month just wondering if anyone has heard anything.

    thanks

    If you're a pilot, you should get scheduled for the fly-off/interview now-ish. I think they're flying 20 dudes/dudettes for 12 spots.

  3. Resurrecting the topic.

A friend planned a short notice (relative to the State Department's timeline) side trip to Canadiastan. There's no way I'll get a passport in time. Can I still travel on Leave Orders with an ID?

The U.S. State Department calls out "Official Orders" (http://www.getyouhome.gov/html/lang_eng/eng_sa.html). The Canadian side says "If you are a citizen of the United States, you do not need a passport to enter Canada" (http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/security-securite/admiss-eng.html).

BL: Anybody had experience with traveling on leave orders to Canada since 1 Jun 09?

  4. My traveling pet peeve: fat people. So fat they go straight to the flight attendant (acting all sheepish) to get a seatbelt extension before they even try to sit down. If they know they're morbidly obsese--and I can't imagine how that would come as a surprise--they should buy two seats or upgrade to business class.

    I hate that shit.

  5. There is really no need to use foul language here...

Au contraire mon frere. You're stirring a great big pot.

For example, messed up uniforms, messy hair cuts, unusual need to party ever single night, they talk down to all other commissioning sources, OH yeah and not to mention the ring that they are all constantly wearing.
    !

Not everybody wears their ring. And are you serious about hair cuts?! :rainbow:

    I want to know why.

Because they're better than you. Now go color, worry less about non-existent career advantages others don't have, and kick ass at your job.

There's freaks, geeks, and assholes from every source and everywhere you go (a point brabus already made).

  6. Letterman shed some light on the topic:

Top Ten Signs An Astronaut Is Trying To Kill You

    • 10 Says, "This is a giant leap for mankind" as she tosses you off a bridge
    • 9 You turn on CNN and see the Hubble Telescope focusing on your house
    • 6 She promises to "Take you out like Pluto"
    • 7 It sounds crazy, but you could swear Mars is following you
    • 6 You were on the "Maury" episode: "I Had A Booty Call And Now An Astronaut Is Trying To Kill Me"
    • 5 Her previous attempts to kill you have been postponed due to high winds
    • 4 She poisons your Tang
    • 3 Says she looks forward to being the first to walk on your lifeless corpse
    • 2 Been getting threatening emails from Connie@International Space Station.com
    • 1 She keeps stabbing you with a pen that writes upside down

  7. Your only recourse for failing anamaloscope is an ETP. Even if a bunch of generals to decide that you're "exceptional" enough to be an ETP candidate (after the selection process decided you're among the most apt of the UPT candidates), once it goes to AF/CV (vice CSAF), this is what happens:

    1) AF/CV tasks AF/SG (3-star top doc) to render an opinion

    2) AF/SG tasks Brooks to give an opinion

    3) Brooks (same guys that DQ'd you to begin with) tell AF/SG that you're "too risky" or something along those lines

    4) AF/CV follows AF/SG advice, sends a letter to your MAJCOM saying "sorry, no can do"

    5) Some "less apt" runner-up* from the bottom of the UPT candidate pool is now going to UPT

It's a downer, but know the odds before you start the fight. If you can think up a different way to fight it, pass the gouge!

    * - who may turn out to be a rock star pilot, mind you

  8. Methinks UAVs are good for missions that pilots cannot fly (i.e. loiter for extremely long times) or for missions where a disposable asset is desired. $50-80M/jet (or whatever the F-35 costs today) is not disposable.

    Just a thought.

  9. I like the idea of the WO (always made sense to me). But, talking about staff officers, do we reallly have it wrong? When it comes to the staff jobs...let the experts do what they're experts at. Maintenance dudes probably know how to maintenance shit better than anybody else (and on down the line for Intel, Acq, personnel, passing out gym towels). Some cross-training experience should exist, and we do that. All those "experts" at the tops of the support career fields ultimately report to an operator (WG/CC, MAJCOM, etc.) who keeps the focus on the mission. That is generally what we do (operators at top do reality check).

MY POINT: Problems with leadership aren't what AFSC of airmen we promote, it's WHO we're promoting. Just cuz a dude has wings doesn't mean he's not a freak, geek, tool, and/or ass-kissing careerist. The future OG needs to take a look around the room and pick out who gets his boxes checked and a rock-star OPR. And it better not be the weinner who's at his door every week.

  10. He was saying don't ***** too loud. He's apparently a UPT stud and would gladly deal with MPF ass-pain to get his wings.

I would personally give a testicle (the bigger of my lopsided pair) to fly. Not all cobblers are cobblers by choice. I, for one, am grateful that I'm cobbling some interesting shoe. Cutting edge clogs. It could be a lot worse.

Being from Milwaukee (Algonquin for the "the good land"), I totally got this one. Back in the day, Milwaukee had a long history of socialist, and not surprisingly, corrupt mayors. God damn hippies. Anways, back to the story. One of these mayors awarded a monopoly for all drinking fountains to the bubbler company (Kohler). So, every time you took a drink, you saw the word bubbler on the drain. It stuck. Not a navy thing...a Milwaukee thing. And apparently a few other places here and there.
  12. Shot in the dark here...has anybody ever fought past an AF/CV denial? Seems pretty unlikely to me, but I also thought it pretty unlikely for something to get past the MAJCOM and not past Air Staff.

I'm well into "get over it" mode, but wonder if I would have better than 0.000000000000000000000001% odds at getting a 4 star to change his mind.

That 5 years figure from Rage says a lot.

  13. I got to wondering after reading about AETC switching up the flight screening program...

Q1: So, are the Fireflys still sitting in the hangers @ USAFA?

Last I heard they were. They didn't want to scrap them, but they couldn't sell them either becuase papa blue would have to pronounce them safe. And even with the post flight test modifications, it was too delicate an issue.

Q2: If one were for sale for....say...$40K, would you buy it? Assume that it's modified/repaired.

Q3: Does anybody here have insight as to whether the mod program actually worked?

  14. Is Toro referring to the mighty Oregon District?! It is the place to be.

    I kid, I kid.

If you haven't been in town too long, and are wondering where to booze, PM me and I'll give you a couple of hints. Being a young American Fighting Man with his priorities in order, I'm sure this assistance won't be required.

  15. Copy that. The T.O. beats me anyday. Still...non-metallic paint shouldn't pose a problem.

ViperStud, you obviously haven't heard about the FB-1 program. We've converted it into a regional fighter. Sucker holds 124 AIM-120s and 36 AIM-9x. The carrier variant is replacing the JSF.
