  1. I see like many have mentioned, a lot of 1-2 yr bonus takers running with their current ADSC commitments.

The 1-2 year option may be a boon for those seeking the airlines, especially if they are non-current or not competitive for a legacy carrier at the end of their UPT ADSC. Those folks could sling gear for a regional for $38K/year or keep flying for Big Blue for $150K/year with the bonus. I know which one I'd choose to build my resume, especially if I was in a line flying squadron.

A 1 year bonus ADSC would preserve the 7-day option for a PCS while keeping the 365 risk (window) small. Thoughts?

what is the commitment for a white jet tour? does it start after you finish PIT?

3 year ADSC for advanced flying training if you are getting a Form 8 in an airframe new-to-you.  (Doesn't count if you flew it in UPT.) Starts upon graduation of that syllabus.  Too lazy to cite the AFI so take it with a grain of salt.

That's the ADSC.  When the AFPC trainer functional will release you is a whole different story.  Here in my corner of AETC we are all on 4 year tours (3.5 years post-PIT) before reaching escape velocity.

Anyone know what the last ENJPPT class dropped? I heard there were 16 F-16s dropped.

EN 17-01 was previously covered here:

    http://www.flyingsquadron.com/forums/topic/4486-track-selects-and-assignment-nights/?do=findComment&comment=416551

EN 17-02 drops in a couple of weeks.

Side note: I could not have run my T-6 student flight without the outstanding efforts of a cadre of T-6 FAIPs -- God bless 'em all.  It's difficult to differentiate performance at at the Lieutenant level regardless of MWS/white jet.  Some people will get their dream follow-on and others with get the opposite.  Welcome to Big Blue.

  4. Take rates for FY16 as of 12 Sep with 18 days left until the program closes are shown below.

Highlights:  45.6% take rate for pilots overall.  Early takers for FY17 are at 25.9% and, as recently alluded, the FY17 ACP isn't likely until Spring at the earliest.

Major General Allardice, is that you?!  Nothing helps morale like have a two-star say that exact thing to your face as an impressionable junior captain.  That kind of stuff is what happens between year 1-8 -- in addition to marriage, kids, and changing priorities -- that make CGOs want to punch so badly.

On drop night at UPT, do students find out their first base along with their aircraft assignment, or do they find out their base assignment during/after FTU?

MAF school houses are much shorter than CAF school houses.  Some -- like the KC-10 -- are in-house at their respective bases.  MAF co-pilot courses are typically a TDY enroute to a PCS which is why MAF assignments typically come with bases attached.  Yes, the C-130 school house is typically a PCS -- just barely.  CAF courses are a PCS where you find out your first operational base sometime during your B-course.

    As for the FAIPs, well...

HOW ABOUT THAT EN 16-08 DROP LAST WEEK... ANYBODY?!

  7. I saw a discussion in the VML thread about getting back into the C-17 community after a white jet/UAV/etc tour. I wanted to answer but I figured this was a better post for it.

I just recently returned to the C-17 community after a white jet tour. The summer VML is difficult to return to the C-17 because all the school graduates headed to DO/CC slots fill the summer slots. I was told by the functional to try to be reclaima and try for the fall VML. Also, what requal slot you are trying for greatly affects your chances. I was trying for a ACRQ slot and there are only like 12 a year. It seemed like IPRQ were easier to get. Like everything in the AF, luck and timing have everything to do with it.

So how does that work for those that left the C-17 as an MP for UPT after only 1 ops assignment? If AC requal spots aren't available that VML cycle what happens? Another white jet tour? Forced crossflow? Auto-Pred/GHawk? I can name at least 12 people in this position in my year group alone.

    edit: I blame Jack Daniels

  8. Actually it depends how far into your UPT commitment you are. An additional ADSC for requal or IP upgrade cannot exceed your original 10 yr ADSC. See AFI 36-2107 Table 1.1. Note 1b.

"b. All manned or unmanned pilots, navigators, and air battle managers who began aviation service after 30 September 1997 will not incur any additional Advanced Flying Training (AFT)/Instructor Qualification ADSCs which extend beyond 6 or 10 years as applicable, of continuous or cumulative rated service. Rated service begins at the completion of training and awarding of wings for the rated specialty. They will still incur Permanent Change of Station (PCS), Professional Military Education (PME), and other non-AFT related ADSCs."

I stand corrected - thanks for diving into that AFI and sharing the good news with everybody.

  9. Does anybody have any experience with either of the ALLATPS locations in the DFW area (ADS/GKY)? How about US Aviation Academy in Denton (DTO)?

My written is complete and I'm looking to take my checkride this Spring. The ATP programs at both Altus (AXS) and Sheppard (SPS) are a little too new and unproven/gouge-less for my taste - and I can't get ahold of the guy in Boston. I'm hoping to avoid duece123's experience with a non-military-friendly DPE and I don't think that the Higher Power ATP/type combo is right for me at the moment.

  10. My wife and I closed on our first house last week with Amy Paterson from NBOKC. Her customer service was fantastic! We locked in a 3.65 percent, 30-year-fixed VA rate back in June. As first-time home buyers we had plenty of questions and Amy always took the time to explain everything. We bought a new house that was under construction and dealt with our fair share of headaches including slipping the closing date a week. Amy was fantastic throughout the entire process. Our realtor said that Amy was by far the best out-of-town lender she had ever dealt with and was better than most of the local lenders. We would use Amy and NBOKC again in a heartbeat.

  11. Has anybody used an online course to renew their CFI/CFII tickets that would recommend the course they took?

I've seen American Flyers for $125, and it looked promising. I'd use AOPA, but I'm not a member.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I just used the American Flyers course a week ago to renew my CFI for the fourth time. Quick, cheap, easy, and accessible from the 'stans. It's the AMU-equivalent for CFI renewal. Pay once, use forever. I always opt for the ACR service since skipping a trip to the FSDO is worth $50 to me.

  12. A friend a mine sent along this little ACSC gem entitled, "Effects-Based Operations for USAF Band Operations." Just read the abstract and try to keep a straight face. It's from 2008 but I suspect the same arguments are being made today by TIB-types in the face of the current budget situation.

  13. So we (UPT studs) were informed today that we need to start tracking and compiling bullets for our training reports...

I second Danger41's statement - don't worry about that crap (yet). You won't even have an OPR due until 120 days after you show up to your new squadron, which means you won't have anything to bullets from for your PRF. If your Captain PRF is due and you don't have an OPR yet your flight commander(s) will gin up an MFR with some generic bullets. In the MAF world you will have plenty of opportunity to spend a few hours 'volunteering' during the duty day setting up some lame bullets while you are getting mission ready (read: endless CBTs/ground training events/appointments/etc.) before you go on your dollar ride.

    Your priorities in UPT:

    1. Bust your ass learning how to fly

    2. Don't do anything stupid like get a DUI / hit on the enlisted / fail out

Let your gaining flight commander(s) worry about PRF queep - they are much better at it than you are.

  14. Shack. Just what I need, another laptop to slap a bandaid on a broken process. Let's see, I now have a CT2, Tactics, JPADS, MIF laptop to keep up with and use inflight. We need logistics to more effectively use our aircraft. I've flown empty from the AOR more times than I care to count. I know that there is a backlog of sh1t that needs to get out of theater. Why are we not hauling that? Aircrews aren't wasting resources. Our logistics folks are.

Couldn't have said it better. On my last two trips I was the only crew member trained on PPAS/MIF. We already have a computer in the C-17 that is our primary fuel planning resource - it's called the mission computer (our name for the FMS for those unfamiliar). We can fly all the "Mission Index" we want to save 200# on a leg but when we fly from ETAD direct to the west coast with a cargo of seven Space-As to the tune of 230,000# of gas all motivation to save goes out the window.

This MIF stuff comes on the heals of an update to our 2MDSV3 directing us to save fuel through cutting our preflight APU usage. Every time we try to save 100# we end up screwing ourselves with overheating avionics resulting in late takeoffs.

If you want to save some gas let's fly fewer legs with more cargo!

While we're at it, why can't the FEO get the data currently provided via the AMC Fuel Tracking directly from AOC/ACARS for the C17? The damn thing beams that information directly to mom & dad every time we takeoff and land anyway.

  15. wondering if any Travis guys out there could update on what life is like. Are Travis guys gone as much as/more/less than other bases? (other than, PACAF... I already know that's the place to be...)

Current Travis co-pilot here; PM sent.

I hear that you'll need to be masters' and PME complete to be competitive... </sarcasm>

Air Force officials reinstate captain central selection board

    by Beth Gosselin

Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs

10/13/2010 - WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- Promotion opportunities for active-duty line of the Air Force first lieutenants competing for promotion to captain is being adjusted to 95 percent, Air Force officials announced Oct. 13 here.

Since the promotion opportunity to captain will now be less than 100 percent, the Air Force officials will reinstate a captain central selection board for LAF officers, officials said, citing 2002 as the last previous captain promotions board. The new change will be effective with the next captain LAF promotion board, scheduled for July 2011.

This falls in line with recent changes to the LAF promotion opportunity to major, which went from 95 percent opportunity to 90 percent opportunity, effective with the December 2010 major LAF board convening at the Air Force Personnel Center.

"These are efforts to ensure the Air Force selects only the best qualified officers for promotion to the ranks of captain and major," said Col. Julie Boit, the chief of Military Force Policy chief.

"It's important that our young officers understand that selection for promotion to the next higher rank is competitive, and promotions become increasingly competitive with each higher grade," Colonel Boit said.

The colonel added that junior officers, more than ever, must ensure their personnel records are in order.

"We've always encouraged our officers to review their personnel records at least annually; this drives the point home even more," she said. "Lieutenants and captains will now compete for fewer captain and major opportunities, resulting in a more highly competitive selection process for officers preparing to enter our field grade ranks, which typically demand much greater responsibility."

The colonel explained that as the Air Force continues to hone its force development plans and select officers to fill positions at the higher grade, the service will remain committed to selecting the best qualified officers for promotion.

New LAF promotion opportunity rates are not unusual and the new promotion opportunities will still be well within Department of Defense guidelines, the colonel said.

"These changes will better align us with the promotion rates of the other services," she said. "This is a move that makes sense in light of the increasing joint nature of the military."

  17. Pickup Taco for lunch.

There are a couple of other Mexican restaurants in town that I think are better (for what it's worth). Taqueria El Tapatio is "downtown" and serves some darned good authentic Mexican food. Their barbacoa tacos are awesome! There's a place called The Plaza that opened up recently; it's pretty good Tex-Mex fare with some surprisingly healthy options on the menu.
