Report out:
Two Navy instructor pilots from San Diego have been forever stripped of flying status and two student pilots will have to repeat training because of a September incident in which they dipped two $33 million helicopters into Lake Tahoe while trying to take photos for the squadron’s Facebook page, a Navy official said Wednesday.More: http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/dec/22/no-punishment-navy-pilots-who-dipped-helos-lake-ta/

Alright then, noted.
225+ posts of disbelief and people crying out for justice, and you roll over and die because of the comments of one poster? Doesn't sound like someone making a career in politics to me.
I'm a Brit and don't know anything about US politics. But, if this were an issue involving the RAF, I'd be supporting my MP and would be quite sure that there are plenty of things he could be doing *in addition* to looking into this. I'd remind him that this incident damaged international relations with a foreign power on whom our nation was reliant in order to fight the global war on terror; that it reeks of some kind of nepotistic corruption that his constituents may not be happy about paying for; and that the individual concerned has made a mockery of the support available to combatants with real PTSD, and continues to cost his constituents hard-earned taxpayer £s that could be spent on more worthy causes.
Personally, I am pretty interested in seeing whether the Wikileaks cables will shed any light on this.

This thread is brilliant.
Allegedly, the one on the left was the UAV pilot, the one on the right the sensor operator.

Was that info SIB-only data? If it was, then the AF Times was way out of line printing privileged info (not that the AF Times isn't usually out of line...)
No. Based on the information in the AIB, it's very easy to deduce who was sitting where and who was actually at the controls.
While I would not have 'named and shamed' in the way that the AF Times has, I also think that guys here have to be pragmatic about the fact that it is going to happen.

FIFA President Blatter is a huge moron. His comments about Middle Eastern countries becoming more open (to gays!?) just shows that his only concern in life is to make money whatever it takes. He'd probably say the same if Iran had won the right to host.

Nice work. Those guys really appreciate it.

Love seeing the U-2 guys interacting with the UK spotters at Fairford. Great sense of humour.

Wow, thanks Buzz.
Valid. I thought the Timmy Martins quote was inspired.

Stract
The full AIB is not linked to (at least that I can find), but has been released: http://www.pacaf.af.mil/shared/media/document/AFD-101210-079.pdf
What was the point of having the MLM on the practise? It is not explicitly explained in the AIB, and since it does explicitly state that he was seated in the load master seat (and not on the flight deck), it seems like a valid question.

I am curious to know how the AF and the guys in the squadron support the families in this sort of situation.

Thanks, Toro.

Given the comments above about the OG CC, and the report's mention of procedural guidance and programme oversight, does the release of the AIB mean that there has not been any disciplinary action in the Wing?

Somebody in your classroom uses a service that you can't detect, that you can't defend against, that you may not even know exists.
I don't get it. In the UK, if you are suspected of using someone else to write your academic assignments, they pull you into a room and give you an interview on the subject. Is he really saying that academics in the US are not wise to this practise and cannot defend against it?

The original Aggressors of the 1970s lost four T-38s and six pilots due to delamination of the MLG doors when at 0g and negative g loads. They realised it was unsafe as an adversary platform, which is why they got rid of it. Has that particular limitation now been addressed?

The guy was a real "Asheyhole".
I am guessing that was Gen. Ashy. I understand that he made few friends when he was the TFWC CC at Nellis.

Contacts work very well for me. I haven't worn glasses in the cockpit in almost 20 years.
A few years ago, I switched to disposable lenses. Definitely the way to go for eye-health, cost, convenience.
You wear contacts inside that space helmet? What do you do if one feels a little unsettled or feels like it might pop out?

Family have spoken to the media: Capt. Jeffrey A. Haney is the missing pilot, they say.

From the TIB history pages: Priceless.
Morons can't even spell YMCA!

Why no NC-135W?
I jest.
Your models look incredible.

Alarm Red...I don't get you. You have a twisted sense of reality. I have been at odds with other statements that you make, but with this one...I am nearly speechless. EVERYTHING you do is for the 18 year-old grunt on the ground. If you are a BUFF pilot during LINEBACKER then you are destroying the enemy's means to resist. Have you read "Supplying War" or anything by Sun Tzu? If you have any military education at all, you know that our job directly effects the Marines and Soldiers on the ground.
Actually, that's not true. El Dorado Canyon had nothing to do with supporting boots on the ground, nor did the decade-long OSW and ONW.

"Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools."
- Douglas Bader
___________________________
Sir Douglas Bader was a WWII Royal Air Force Group Commander who decided to fight the rules that active pilots must have legs - he'd lost his in a pre-war flying accident.
Hmm.
1) Bader lost his legs because he didn't follow peacetime training rules (and it very nearly cost him his life)
2) Bader only got back in the cockpit because there was a a war on and we were exceedingly short of pilots
I suspect that you know better examples to cite, Mike.

Navy pilots grounded after flight over Lake Tahoe
SAN DIEGO - Two Navy helicopter pilots from North Island Naval Air Station were grounded over a YouTube video that allegedly showed them dipping the $33 million aircraft into Lake Tahoe.
VRS?

What parallels was he trying to draw between the US and Taliban side of the story? The video has been pulled from YouTube, so I haven't seen it.

Yeah, my bad!
Good to know.
It could be pretty spectacular.
