  1. “Would you have confidence in the airworthiness of a commercial airliner if you saw peeling paint or torn seats or unfastened rivets? … In the same respect, the American public, inspector general or any other airman might wonder how a base is addressing large issues when they observe an apparent disregard for ‘small’ things,” Bergdolt wrote.

Yep, walking around with your hands in your pockets is totally akin the to airworthiness of an airplane. You just can't make this stuff up.

  2. This is not about women being in the SEALs or SF, this is about female officers checking an infantry box and making rank.

Funny thing is that the Army (until this change) is the only service where a woman theoretically couldn't be CoS. Even the USMC has an aviator as their Commandant right now, which isn't a position closed to women. Kind of thought the rank argument was a bit weak given you can generally obtain a high rank in non-combat positions (albeit there will probably be less opportunities than if you did come from a combat arms background).

  3. No offense, but you have a surprisingly short-sighted and/or idealistic view of this. Give it time and there will be compulsory rules for churches and whoever else, regardless of their beliefs. Conservatives use the 'slippery slope' rhetoric as a scare tactic, but its really not that far off base.

If you don't get what you want, sue until you do. It's the American way.

The comment from the plantiffs' lawyer in the first case implied that there was a dispute over whether the pavilion was public or private property. Not sure if the 2nd case is really an instance of government overreach, either: if the Church wants to buy and sell assets in the public market, they're susceptible to laws that come with it (unless there isn't a law preventing them from discriminating on who they sell to).

  4. There are two great things about Kerry getting SECSTATE.

    1. This means he won't be the Secretary of Defense.

    2. It could lead to a more balanced Senate.

I've seen people talking about point 2--think Brown will win the special election?

  5. Ugh. They're not upset at the death of civilians and children on both sides... but suggesting you might shut down the internet crosses the line.

Which is why I think this organization (if you can even call it that) is less about an ideology and more about "HURR I JUST TOOK DOWN THE GOVERNMENT OF ISRAEL'S SERVERS LAWL!"

This article from the WP seems to have the most credible explanation so far. According to this account, the woman (Broadwell) threatened another woman by e-mail. The other woman reported it to the FBI as a threat, and upon identifying Gen. Petraeus's involvement they investigated to ensure it wasn't a hacking-in of his e-mail, compromise of classified material or other criminal action given his role as CIA director. They apparently discovered no evidence of a crime by anyone, but came across evidence of the affair - which made it's way to the DNI. Apparently it fell apart after that, with the General choosing to resign (on advice from the DNI). Unfortunately, the article alludes to the possibliity of another woman participant.

I don't buy a conspiracy re: Benghazi or any other skull-duggery. It seems to me like an incredibly accomplished and admired military leader fell victim to a very human weakness with an attractive and (probably) aggressive younger woman.

+1, too bad it looks like she might have been a bit nuts, too.

  7. International rhetoric/foreign policy. Pakistan and N Korea aren't going around with a political stance that calls on the destruction of another nation and the genocide of an entire people.

Believe me, I am not saying Pakistan and N Korea are excellent choices for having nukes, but if I had to pick two from the three on this list it would be as is.

Let's throw out Pakistan altogether. NK's rhetoric is probably worse than Iran, but no one pays them any attention because it's on a different level of nuttery. I think you're reading too much into what Iran says for the masses and what they'd actually do in a no-shit situation where they were facing a military attack. Try and mess with the Strait of Hormuz? Maybe. Actually nuke someone (assuming they had the capability)? Doubtful.

  8. They are saying it was shot down by AAA. If it was optically guided, then he wouldn't really have known until the bullets hit.

Funny thing about those new air defenses the Russians gave them: http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2012/06/22/the_best_thing_ever_written_about_syrian_air_defenses

I don't think anything comes of this. Turkey's current leadership doesn't want to get involved in anything that would force it to call in the rest of NATO. This might be Syria's 2nd strike in the "misunderstanding" game, though.

  9. You're late. The wedding issue is already out.

DC announced that another character will be coming out of the closet soon. I've got my fingers crossed for Wonder Woman.

Wouldn't get too excited, her lover will probably look like Thor.
