Nothing other then the landing gear handle

Nose gear should have also retracted if the gear handle had been lifted, assuming no other issues.  Especially with the center line bag, the nose gear would have been more protected than the MLG and more likely to retract/collapse on landing roll since it moves up and back.

  2. The AF needs to stop this "abundance of caution" BS.  In this instance, the abundance of caution was the driving force in moving the aircraft from the runway.  I'm sure the MX guys were happy that they could sit back and watch caution do the work.  Mentioned twice in the same article, just absurd.

The second WTF from that article was the photos were from a facebook page.  AF needs to find that douche and put him on every night and weekend duty until he learns his lesson.

Finally, neither main gear door is open.  Not sure how a hard landing would cause not only both MLG to collapse but also the doors to retract.  I suppose landing on the center line tank and nose gear could be deemed a "hard landing".  Maybe the dude started to go around, pulled up the gear, and then hit (unlikely since the NG seems to be fully down).  Otherwise there is more to this story than a bad landing.

  3. I've failed my hearing test the last three years in a row.  Each time the tech tells me "sir, you need to be back within 30 days to retest so we can reset your baseline."  But no one has mentioned it again when I never show back up...

Probably just a WOM, but I've talked to 3-4 guys that had the same thing, fell for the trick of actually going back, only to get 0% for hearing when they retire.  They think the reset baseline makes it look like they've had zero hearing loss.  Or maybe the VA hearing baseline is absolute and based on a retired artillery NCO.

    -  Do deliberate career management along the way.  “Career management” is vastly different from “careerism.”  It simply means you give a shit.  You seek mentorship and try to excel and generally know what’s required to make the rank that you aim to make, get the assignments you aim to get, and meet other goals you set for yourself and your family.  *Careerism, by contrast, is trying to attain pieces of flair:  medals, awards, titles, accolades, and high rank insignia for the sake of improving individual ‘status’ or sense of self-worth.  It’s brown-nosing the boss, attention seeking, and stepping on the bros along the way.  Don’t do that.

Know what YOUR career goals are.  Big blue has career goals for you and there's a 99.9% chance it's not what you actually want.  Pretend it is your goal too as that will probably help you with your goal as long as they're not mutually exclusive.  But don't ever forget you're working towards your goal, not big blue's.  Just don't become the O-6 that has pretended so long they forgot they were pretending.

  5. Good thing that's on tape!  The judge would never believe that guy.  "honest sir, I know we were having problems, but one minute she's yelling at me and the next minute a tiger is dragging her away".

86 days* on my eForm 1 as of today, still no approval.

Beginning to think the ATF is fucking with me!

As of 3 July 2023, their website said the average was 40 days! 🤬🤬🤬

    * - 86 days, a.k.a...

    • 7,430,400 seconds
    • 123,840 minutes
    • 2064 hours
    • 12 weeks and 2 days
    • 23.56% of 2023

Yikes.  I sent in my fingerprints after I realized I had forgotten to and I received mine back spread out over the last couple weeks.

--Edit to add, think mine were all approved around 50 or so days.  They have to be most of the way through the pistol brace apps, I bet you get yours soon.

Also, a friend told me that since the bottom of the approved form 1 had the restriction of something like 'IAW pistolbrace rule' that it wasn't a real full up form 1.  I found this on the ATF website (always better to read laws/rules/bureaucratic junk from a .gov site rather than hearsay).  Note question 12.  Like any other form 1, you need to 'notify the NFA division' if you change the overall length, but I see some folding stocks in my future.

  7. Clearly not where you want to spend the night, but at least they put cots out.  Seen plenty of people sleeping in chairs and on the floor.  A cot is a huge step up from sleeping upright on an airport bench.

  8. Coal gets an overly bad name due to mental images from the 60's of coal plants belching out black smoke.  Modern coal plants are not that bad environmentally.  Would be interesting to see a full life cycle comparison of the lithium mining, production, and disposal compared to coal.  Obviously something of an apples to oranges comparison, but if it could be impartially quantified, I wouldn't be surprised to see coal win.

Nuclear is better, but the left seems to dislike it for some reason despite the fact that it seems to be the only realistically cost effective and clean energy source.

Nah, I kinda figured I'd try to get my point across but that in the end no one would change their minds and I probably should just bang my head against the countertop instead. I was right to have that suspicion!

I'm truly beginning to view my entire ongoing participation in the forum here as not worth it. Why am I here debating with a bunch of people I've never met, who don't respect my opinions or share my values, and don't give a f anyways? It's a great question.

Frankly I don't know what I'm getting out of talking to all you smelly assholes that I can't get by just talking in person to my squadron homies. Politics, flying, AF bitching, etc., it all gets discussed on shift and I've got plenty of years in uniform left to enjoy that back & forth.

Good luck to you, have a great life.

Don't expect grown adults to significantly change their political views based on what someone posts on a message board.  If you really think you're going to change someone's mind, you have too high of expectations for yoursel.  You might get people to think about why they think a certain way and I think that is about as far as is reasonable to expect here.

Otherwise, just stick with the General Discussion thread and help the younger guys.  I started reading this and posting some questions over 20 years ago.  This can be a valuable resource and help when guys have questions that they are either too afraid to ask in person or simply don't know who to ask.  Don't quit because you didn't convince a bunch of people they were approaching political problems from the wrong viewpoint in an online discussion board.  That's about as realistic as picking political fights on facecrack thinking you're actually going to change someone's mind.

...Govt healthcare is so great, why doesn’t everyone want it?! Also, SS is theft…there needs to be a completely new “social safety net” developed.

The fact that more people don't recognize this is an obvious sign our society is dumb.  What other investment system do you get out roughly what you put in after having 40+ years of investment growth?  It is a government run pyramid scheme.  If I were to go start an investment plan like this, I'd be thrown in prison, but since the government does it, suddenly it is so great that it is a vital part of our society.

And it should be mandatory to have lived in a socialized medicine system for at least two years to be eligible to vote for such a system.

No one in their right mind thinks Lebron James should be able to go to the WNBA overnight. But if the right amount of treatment is done to minimize the advantage to as little as possible or ideally 0, then who cares?

And it's worth noting that it's only ever trans women that seem to get the hate. Would you really want a trans man to compete in women's sports just because they were born a biological women? Of course not, that wouldn't be fair

The previous NCAA testosterone requirement for a male to compete as a female was to bring the testosterone levels down to or below 10 nmol/L.  Problem is the normal range for women is .5-2.4 (https://www.healthline.com/health/low-testosterone/testosterone-levels-by-age#normal-testosterone-levels), so the biological male that was born with a biological propensity for larger muscle mass, larger bones, faster muscle movements could compete as a female, despite those previously mentioned advantages AND with still having 4-20 times the testosterone levels as the women he is competing against.  How is that fair?  Sports have rules for a reason and it is to make it a fair competition.

To your second point, there are very few, if any, sports where women are better than men, so no one cares about a biological woman competing in as a man or even as a woman.  Look at the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, etc.  Do any of them have rules against a woman playing?  Not that I know of.  But there are none because when you get to that level of competition, you're talking the top .01% of athletes.  There are no women in the top .01% for those sports.  That's why Serena and Venus Williams, possibly two of the best female tennis players ever, both lost to a man that was ranked 102.

Third, it is not hate.  The left is quick to throw out 'hate' because 'hate' is bad and they only have emotional arguments.  But, like calling someone racist, if you say it all the time it becomes meaningless.  I don't hate these individuals, I feel sorry for them.  40% of transgender people have actively attempted suicide.  They have a mental illness and our society has decided that it is better to play into their delusion than help them.  If I was walking across a bridge and saw someone about to jump off, would it be hateful of me to tell them they shouldn't?  Should I indulge their desire to kill themself and tell them I think they're brave or should I pull them back from the edge and get them help?  Which of these actions is loving and which is hateful?  These people are actively hurting themselves (and even worse, hurting children) and somehow it is 'hateful' of me to not give them my full support.

Stupid tweet bro, no one was attacked (except the homeless man) or sexually assaulted 🤷‍♂️

Stupid post bro.  He wasn't saying this specific event had a sexual assault.  He's saying the prosecution of the Marine is going to stop others from intervening in the future.  There have been links in this thread to youtube videos of assaults and even rape on public transit with no intervention from bystanders.  The reaction to this event is only going to increase that risk.

  13. Multiple teenagers beat some NYC subway riders just a few days later and put some of them in the hospital.  Zero charges filed.  This Marine's "crime" fits the political narrative, so he's being charged.  That's the one and only reason.

Unfortunately, most people who could and would help bystanders in the future will be far more reluctant to do so now and it's hard to blame them.  The cops are apparently only there (if/when they're there at all) to arrest people after the fact IF they think the politically minded DA will press charges.

  14. Ah! Fingerprints... totally forgot to mail those.  That explains it.  Thanks for the link.  (the link just has it sitting there with no approval nor disapproval, just remembered looking at the instructions again that I hadn't mailed the fingerprints in)

  15. Sucks the "houseless" (nice that my spellcheck says that's not a word by the way) dude died, but he was not an innocent party.  As others have said, actions have consequences.  I feel far less sympathy towards him than I would have for some actually innocent girl that he may have assaulted a minute later.  Funny thing about crazy people acting crazy; you never know when their behavior will go from very concerning to lethal.

Sucks the Marine had to go through this, but also reassuring that we still have guys with the balls to intervene in a situation they see as dangerous.  The Marine may have gone too far, but tough to judge without being in his shoes.  Would have been worse if the "houseless" dude acting in an aggressive manner suddenly pulled a knife and killed someone when an obviously capable individual could have prevented it.

Finally, the first report is always inaccurate.  Was it a forearm across the throat hold or a sleeper hold?  I would bet most of the witnesses don't remember (if they even knew the difference in the first place) and the reporter sure doesn't know the difference.  Also, were there drugs in the dude's system?  I bet this Marine has trained with that hold on fellow Marines in the MCMAP with no ill effects, so his previous experience likely told him he was simply subduing the "houseless" guy.
