  1. Leadership did contact me and confirmed. Hopefully the dudes out there that were in a similar situation to me can benefit from the changes the AF is making, and hopefully the AF continues to make changes to improve how all of this is done.

Haven't scrolled back through to check so I hope I'm not intruding here but if you know you didn't get selected and your "leadership" allows you to check the list tomorrow and not see your name, then that is an epic failure and pisses me off.  Too much of that going around in today's Air Force.

Well, I'm 3APZ and we half been at reduced manning where I am, so I'm not even sure what days our O-6 is in. Still, lots of time left in the day, so we will see what happens. I'm not too upset with it. I'm more upset with a promotion system that doesn't give feedback to folks (outside of "maybe next year!") but still expects people to run the race as hard as possible in the hopes of something positive happening.

If the AF is going to make changes to the promotion system, make full-measures that are truly meaningful. Not half-measures that may, or may not, get implemented. /getsoffsoapbox

    How is everyone getting notified?

phone call?   Video call?  In person?

I already know my results (thank you to the grapevine), but my leadership has not contacted me in anyway to give me the same info. So about what I am used to!

  4. So just looking at the board status again (no update since 24 Sept), but it says it takes 18 work days to report into OSD, which would put that date at 5 Oct. looking at the other boards, the public release date was anywhere from 2-4 weeks after that date. Is it possible the results might not released until the 3rd week of October, at the earliest? or will they try to get them out sooner then that?

If I were king for a day, I'd cancel all in-res PME and move to a purely online/correspondence system. The cost-benefit analysis supports that decision from a pure financial one (no more PCS, TDY, travel costs) and a manpower one (uh, Pilot Shortage anyone?), as well as break the strangle hold of the self-licking ice cream cone that are the "selects" and "DGs".

I think COVID lockdowns are exposing the paradigms society at large have been stuck in and we need to re-evaluate what fits in a new "internet of things" reality.

Unfortunately, I think it's self-licking that gets all the attention from Big Blue. That's an intentional word choice, btw...

I like this idea. I would take a step further and open it up to anybody that wants to do it, versus only allowing the top 20%. I would also tie in an option for folks do a career intermission to go to an in-person school for a Master's degree. I think one of the big problems facing the military is that we don't bring in a lot of the tools/ideas that work in the civilian sector, and that's because most leaders haven't been exposed to them.

I did the ACSC OLMP and I enjoyed it. I won a research award (i got my name on a plaque at Maxwell), but, because it wasn't in-residence, it literally gained me nothing career-wise. So why does the AF currently offer this program if promotion boards/senior leaders don't feel they are worth the effort they ask folks to put into them?

  6. So about 2 more weeks until the AF affirms, again, that I am in the bottom 10% of all promotable O-4s? I was even forced to plan the SES Holiday party last year too, so hopefully the board took that into consideration.

I probably won’t actually find out until the list is publicly released since I have been mothballed to the CSA that the 14N’s send only the undesirables too.

That doesn't make much sense since that should've happened during the board, and definitely before it hit the SECAF level. The board instructions said that some officers may be moved up in the order but in reality, that should only affect maybe 1-2% of the list. Anything beyond that really doesn't matter.

Your J1 doesn't seem to have the best gouge anyhow. Didn't you post a while back that the J1 had said the release would be end of August?

I am somewhat curious how they are going to reconcile the pin-on order across all of the categories.

But, somewhat related, our DT came out yesterday and said they were trying to de-emphasize records and re-emphasize performance (they dodged on the question asking about records reflecting performance). So I’m not convinced any AF senior leaders have any idea about what they are trying to do.

That's my point.  It seems like they do not intend to involuntarily separate majors anymore but I am wondering if I am missing something.

I was offered continuation to 24 years after either my 1 APZ or 2 APZ. It didn’t mean I had to serve to the 24 year point, it just meant I could if I wanted to and I wouldn’t get involuntarily separated unless I did something stupid.

What I am more curious about is how to get a 6 month Skillbridge internship before retirement. Does anybody know if you can do a skill bridge program and then start your terminal leave? That would give me about 10-11 months of civilian sector work before I actually am retired. It would also essentially allow me to “retire” at 19 years.

dude thats crazy, they actually wrote one of one? i think you learn not to do that in SOS. did they include the "Combrat" typo in there as well or was that just a typo for you?

I want to say that’s my typo, but I don’t have my PRF with me at home to verify.

ok so..... who is bold enough to come on here and post their results.... whichever way it goes?

I’m confident that I did not get picked up as a 3APZ with a P. At least I think I’m 3APZ. Either way, it doesn’t matter. No way I got picked up. I will come back and confirm whenever the results are released though.

    Here's my bottom-line:

#1/1 eligible; excelling at national agcy...highly trusted, combrat proven leader we need as an O-5--Definitely Promote

    At least I got a #1 strat!

My point was I don't think COVID has an impact to this year's promotion number; however, there is a lot of uncertainties right now with COVID and the election that may affect future boards and end strengths.  I should have been more concise.  I don't have inside knowledge on the promotion numbers.

    Gotcha, I understand. Thanks.

Doubt this is a valid statement since the Army just released their O6 list after Duckworth's hold.

However, been hearing rumbling of funny stuff with end of year funding and GS employees are anticipating mass early retirements (due to funding) come next summer.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but why would an increase in GS retirements impact the O-5 (or any) promotion numbers?

Since they’ve done away with BZ picks, are you looking for IZ/AZ split? Otherwise, I think the selection categories make the statistics pretty cut and dry.

I am interested in the IZ/AZ split. I want to see what the board actually did, compared to the pre-board leadership statements that said the selection categories would make more AZ folks competitive.

Yeah I don't know how that direction will be implemented - I heard about it then read the directive.  It doesn't go into more details so maybe the board will address with masking some stuff - but I doubt it.

Even if they mask it, since the AF moved to the AFSC-specific promo boards, it seems like there is a better chance than not that this guidance will be disregarded.

Its been said multiple times, but, w/o a DP you have about a 1% chance of getting promoted APZ. The stigma Senior AF leaders attach to that designation is too much to overcome. Once you are APZ you are essentially worthless in the eyes of the AF and serve to fill the jobs that the service doesn’t want to really expend resources on.

Which is fine with me because I’ve never had an easier job with more time to do what I want while still seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. The freedom is a real thing, and once you realize that you are getting paid peanuts by the AF for the skills/experience private companies kill for, it makes you feel a lot better about the future.

Any other 2+ APZ types here get blank PRFs back from their SRs (despite it being only two lines) or am I just that good?  I get that the odds probably didn’t change significantly for APZ  because we haven’t moved to the five year window yet but just curious if other SRs didn’t think it worth their time to bother with even a two liner for their previously passed over guys as well.

I had an O-5 tell me I could do that if I wanted to. I won’t get promoted, but I want the AF to have to tell me no again. Don’t want to make the decision for them.

It is only the % of IPZ. A minor change to the overall stats. It is not a percentage of the whole I/APZ group. It equates to another 100 or less above the line.

So when are we actually doing away with the APZ designation? I guess I don’t see how these massive changes to the promotion system have a major impact on APZ folks when the category still exists and the 90% chance of promotion doesn’t actually apply to them.
