It is, but it’s not guaranteed to get a DP from the MLR.

Right, totally get it. Sorry, edited my post as your were responding to better flesh out my thoughts.

I know I will never get an answer from AF leadership, but I would love to hear an explanation of their thought process on when they pass over folks that have been given a DP at any level for folks that have a P.

At my base, we got zero DPs for this O-5 board. So, the flip side is how to you rank the #1 guy from a base who had zero chance of getting a DP vs someone from another base who got one?

In this example, the #1 guy with a P did in fact get selected for O-5 this board.

Isn't that what the MLR is for? So individuals at units that don't have enough eligibles for a DP have a chance at getting a DP?

I get IPZ folks with a P getting selected, but I can't understand APZ folks with a DP not being selected over APZ folks with a P. It's all moot at this point, but it is just head scratching to me.

  3. Just looked at the LAF-I board stats. 3 APZ DP's (IDE Complete) were not selected (9/12 eligible), but 5 APZ P's (IDE complete) were selected (5/186 eligible).

Looking at all of the other boards, the same thing happened. So how does that make any sense at all? How does the board justify selecting any APZ P over any APZ DP, especially when they all have IDE complete?

That is actually a serious question, because, if a DP is supposed to be a significant identifier, especially for APZ folks, how do you promote people that weren't awarded a DP over those that were?

You’re more than 2x passed over, right? Many times people don’t care to notify you because they figure you already know you didn’t make it.

Correct. He also went out of his way to get me a DP this time. I’m not upset, or anything, I’m just raising my eyebrow a little bit.

Doubtful for tomorrow morning.  I'd expect a call today/tonight.  If you do somehow make it to public release without official notification, I'd say that's a positive sign for your chances.  It's a pretty big breach of etiquette to let a non-select see the results without prior notification he/she didn't make it.  Good luck man

I found out on Friday through unofficial channels that I was not selected. It is what it is, unfortunately.

If the notification period is 18-22 June, then in my experience, the LATER you are notified, the more likely you are to be a NO GO for promotion.

Likewise, a phone call out of the blue vs a scheduled meeting.    If you are scheduled a meeting, the more likely you are a NO GO.

that being said, i am scheduled for a meeting on Tuesday!  I also already know through back channels that I am a NON-promote

Received a P on overall recommendation

Bottom Line of 2-line PRF:  “#2/3 I/APZ; #2/11 Majs--beyond ready for Lt Col; Def Promote (verbiage)”

    Last 7 OPRs:

    #1/8 CGOs, (Flt/CC)

#1/4 USAF Majs, Deployed OSD SES; #6/26 Majs (Gp/CC)

    #24/144 Majs (Wg/CC)

    #7/153 Majs (Wg/CC)

    #1/2 Majs (Div/CC)

    #3/7 Majs (SES)

    #2/10 Majs (SES)

    --11x FOGQ and 2x FGOYs

zero negative indicators ever (pt, DUI, anything)

I'm not sure what they are looking for strat wise.  even when they have changed all stratifications to exclude the 2nd and 3rd tier strats, i don't even have any of those; i thought i'd be "good to go".

Tell me the system is still broken without telling me the system is still broken.

  8. Does anybody know how much weight a DP actually gives your record to the board? Everything I’ve ever heard/been told is that a DP is a golden Beebee in all but the most extreme cases of adverse records.

Does a DP add X points to your total board score? I guess what I don’t understand is how there is any justification for promoting any record with a P over a record with a DP (again, excluding records with negative indicators…but again, somebody gave them a DP so…)?

I will be very interested in seeing the RAW data for this promotion because I know they always promote at least one APZ record with a P. So how would the board justify promoting a P APZ record and not a DP APZ record (not that any board will ever be held accountable for any decision they make)?

Any insight is welcome because I don’t think I have ever received a clear explanation on what a DP really does for your board score.

The answer ID 50695 (board results) appears to indicate they are still using twice passed over for continuation.  When do you get official word if it’s offered?  This is my first board, but comparison of the guys that were unfortunately not selected, I don’t stand a chance.

    TIA

I wouldn’t use any of us (if that’s what you are doing) as an indicator of you getting selected/not selected.

I fully believe I didn’t get picked up for personal reasons, not professional reasons.

Edit- to answer your question, I received an email saying I was selected for continuation and to talk with my Group leadership about the next steps. I signed the paperwork in my Gp/CD’s office a few days later.

You should get the option of continuing to 20 or 24 years, but it isn’t an ADSC, just an option. I chose the 24 years but I am getting out in 24 months.

Me as well.  WTF is the point of the board being directed, "You shall not consider # of APZ looks or Year Group....and here's a DP, Airman - congrats" then a big "GFY' from the board.  Seriously?!  Also looking fwd to forgetting about this downward spiral of a career choice.

I agree that it is head scratching to not get selected after an MLR has already boarded your records. Last year (at least for my board), every single DP was selected for promotion.

I do wish we would get a better explanation of the thought process behind scoring records than, “Well, sometimes it happens.”

  11. Found out I was not selected.

DP from the MLR as a 4x APZ. Board went against a BG(s) recommendation.

It is a relief to know that I only have 24 months left in service. I am looking forward to finding an employer that actually wants me as part of the team and putting all my Air Force stuff in a box and forgetting about it.

Best of luck to those still waiting to hear!

Tomorrow’s a Federal Holiday? I did not get that memo...

    ~Bendy

POTUS signed Juneteenth into law as a federal holiday that falls on 19 June. Since that is a Saturday, OPM announced that it will be observed Friday, 18 June.

O-5 Board update: Reported into USD on 4 Jun.

If it follows the last boards timeline (13 working days from USD (P&R) to public release), that would mean:

    DepSecDef: 4 or 7 Jun

    Public Release: 23 Jun (Wednesday)

So notifications out between 18-22 June (that is a Friday to Tuesday)? Not sure when the list is sent to the Wings...If that timeline follows, should be next week, right?

Sorry, no morale slide for this step-brief.

*Note...I have no idea if it will follow the same timeline, but it looks like we should definitely know before the 4th of July weekend. Also, feel free to check my work/math in public, probably missed something.

Just bumping my own assessment #nailedit

*I did miss the DepSecDef date, which was 8 Jun

  14. O-5 board updated.

Public release established as 23 Jun. I would assume notifications were supposed to start tomorrow and will get going in earnest on Monday.

Edit: The results will be released 90~ days from the date the board adjourned (23 March to 23 June). I Don't think I have seen an O-5 board move that fast in 5 years I have been meeting them.

  16. The O-5 board has been updated. Air Staff approved it on 29 Apr 21. I am assuming SECAF will be this month, so maybe a late-June release? Hopefully it goes faster than last year. If not, I would guess results might not be released until late-July/early-August.

  17. So I got my PRF back for the upcoming O-5 board.

Keep in mind that I am a 4x APZ, but I got the following on my push line:

    #1/2 Eligible, #5/24 O-4's, Def Promote

    I also got a DP

I checked last years stats and APZ, w/IDE complete, and a DP was 15/15 selected (for my board).

But, it would be really on-brand for me to be the first ever (under the new board process) APZ w/DP to not get promoted. So that is what I am expecting. But, who knows.

MEMORANDUM FOR SECRETARIES OF THE MILITARY DEPARTMENTS

    SUBJECT: Promotion Selection Board Guidance

This memorandum provides guidance for your use in preparing instructions (precepts) for promotion selection boards convened under your authority in accordance with title 10, United States Code.

As indicated in the National Defense Strategy, China is leveraging military modernization and predatory economics to coerce neighboring countries to reorder the Indo-Pacific region to their advantage. As China continues to seek economic and military ascendance, it will continue to pursue a military modernization program that tries to displace the United States to achieve global preeminence in the future.

Recognizing this challenge to U.S. National Security interests, the Department must grow an officer corps that includes strategists and leaders who excel in their knowledge of the political-military affairs and U.S. strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific region.

You are directed to review and revise promotion selection board precepts and convening orders, as applicable, to emphasize the importance of having senior leaders with Indo-Pacific region experiences. Provide copies of the revised documents to the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness. This memorandum will be effective for promotion selection boards convened on or after January 1, 2021.

This is actually pretty funny. My five most recent OPRs that met the most recent promo board were all from my time in Hawaii (those were actually my best OPRs in my career too...including a boarded position). Why do they even bother putting guidance like this out? The board never follows it.

Looking forward to going back to Hawaii in a few years, after retirement, and getting that sweet GS job and not dealing with this stuff ever again!
