  1. Ran into this online tonight, it's the story of the Air Wing of the Greek Expeditionary Force and their C-47's during the Korean War. It's an interesting read, had no idea that the Greeks were in Korea.

13th Flight of the Royal Hellenic (Greek) Air Force in Korea

    by Elias K. Maglinis

    neptune.jpg

The legendary 92622 which was named "Neptune" (in English on the port side

and Greek on the starboard)in a break from operations, is serviced. RHAF

and Greek Army personnel pose in front of the aircraft.

In the center, wearing black flight jacket is Major Fragoyannis, commander

of the Squadron who was later killed in a tragic accident.

During their five years in country, the "13th Flight" lost 12 officers and NCOs, and two of their seven C-47s. They received a U.S. Presidential Unit Citation and nineteen individual Air Medals for their participation in the evacuation of US Marines while under heavy fire at Hagaru-ri in December 1950. Individual Greek military members, in the air and on the ground, were awarded 6 U.S. Distinguished Service Crosses, 32 Silver Stars, 110 Bronze Stars.

  2. Buying old, used up airframes and putting new equipment is DEFINITELY a tried and true method of producing reliable, modern airplanes that are in no way operationally restricted by their century old technology. I see no problem calling them new airplanes, just like going to the used car lot and buying that 72 Pacer is like buying a new car.... new to you that is.

Hmm.... there appears to not be a sarcasm emoticon...

You're right. I worked for a company that was subcontracted to do mods on several of the future E-8 J-Stars. Two of the aircraft, the former Canadian CC-137 tankers, were in beautiful condition, two of the others, sourced from African airlines were - let's just say, "not".

  3. I'm not sure that the costs quoted are accurate, but certainly a program that was WAY out of line as far as expenses go. Almost hate to see the Nimrods go from a historical perspective - as they were based on the Comet, they are the last flying link to the world's first commercial jet airliner to reach production.

I'll never forget my 'ride along' flight on Nimrod MR2 XV239. Sadly XV239 and her crew were lost a year later in 1995 during the Canadian International Airshow in Toronto.

  4. I hope we change it every 2 years so I can keep wearing my black boots and shirt with my flight suit.

Navy announced new uniform regs today. Amongst them:

The final set of changes announced in the update were regarding the manner of wear for the aircrew flight suit. While in the continental United States, the green flight suit will be worn with a black undershirt, while overseas, aircrew may wear tan flight suits with brown undershirts as determined by the Navy component commander.
  5. Perhaps a top secret Israeli spy falcon sent on a mission to destroy the Saudi Eagles.

Good to see that the "fact-finding committee" wrapped up their work so quickly - must have been a bit of luck to actually find the bird in what was probably a lot of desert. My first thought was that if it wasn't a strike, they must have interviewed the bird to determine the truth.

  6. Falcon forces Saudi F-15 jet to land

    By Staff

    Published Monday, January 24, 2011

A Saudi pilot of a F-15 fighter had to make an emergency landing while his aide parachuted to safety after their aircraft nearly hit a large falcon, a newspaper reported on Monday.

The aide, a lieutenant in the Saudi air force, ejected out and parachuted east of the southern province of Asir, leaving the pilot, a captain, to steer the jet down in en emergency landing, Wojooh online Arabic language daily said.

Neither the pilot nor his aide were hurt in the incident which took place during a routine morning flight over Asir near the border with Yemen, the paper said.

“A fact-finding committee was set up to study the incident, which it found was caused by a falcon,” the paper said, adding that the bird was later found in that area without making clear if it was dead or alive.

Las Vegas tourist sues for refund after sex act led to ‘tragic’ arrest threat

A tourist says he was traumatized when Las Vegas police threatened to arrest him after he complained about an act of prostitution in his hotel room.

Hubert Blackman of New York City filed a lawsuit this month against a Las Vegas company he identified as Las Vegas Exclusive Personals. The lawsuit says the business operates on Paradise Road.

Blackman, a college student, said in an interview Thursday that he was on vacation and staying at the Stratosphere on Dec. 17 when he called Las Vegas Exclusive Personals to arrange for a stripper to come to his room and dance for him.

Blackman said the woman, who appeared to be in her mid 20s, stripped and performed a lap dance for $155 and a sex act for another $120.

He said that the next morning, he called Las Vegas Exclusive Personals to demand his money back, saying he was dissatisfied because the entertainer didn't stay for the promised one hour and left after a half hour.

Blackman said he also told the company he was incapable of making an informed agreement with the stripper because he was drunk at the time.

Dissatisfied when Las Vegas Exclusive Personals didn't arrange for a refund, Blackman said he contacted Metro Police and was told he faced arrest for such conduct and was advised to contact the Better Business Bureau.

Instead, after returning home he filed suit in federal court in New York, charging "An escort did an illegal sexual act on me during her paid service to me'' and "I almost had gotten arrested."

Blackman said he now needs medical treatment for a mental condition related to the incident.

In the suit, which he filed without an attorney, Blackman said: "I would like the court to close the business. I also would like to get my $275 payment back and a $1.8 million verdict for the tragic event that happened."

In the interview Thursday, Blackman said it was the dancer who solicited the sex act -- but he acknowledged he was aware at the time that prostitution was illegal in Las Vegas.

The number listed in Blackman's lawsuit is used by Hillsboro Enterprises, which says it's been licensed for 17 years and provides adult dancers on a subcontractor outcall basis.

Officials at Hillsboro said Thursday they were unaware of the lawsuit or of Blackman's claims, but denied the company is involved in prostitution. They said if anyone calls looking to hire a dancer and indicates they're looking for sex, they're told prostitution is illegal in Las Vegas and all of Clark County.

  8. Why age it in an oaken cask, when you can get it in the can (STS)? Thought 4 Loco was fun? It's eight shots in a can...

I'll bet THIS is the good stuff.

The dram in a can: Scottish whisky the way South Americans like it...

    By Mark Howarth

Last updated at 9:12 AM on 17th January 2011

It is a sight that will have whisky connoisseurs spluttering into their drink – a dram in a can.

A Panama-based company believes outdoor drinkers would prefer to crack open a tin rather than lug round a bottle of their favourite tipple.

Now bosses at Scottish Spirits – which retains an office in Glasgow – is testing out the novelty on its Caribbean and South American markets.

Chief executive Manish Panshal said: ‘We are really thrilled with the idea – it’s going to be a part of every lifestyle and occasion.

‘The can is the perfect size to be shared between three people who can mix it with other things like cola.

‘It’s lightweight and portable and entirely recyclable, which is good news. It will be one of the hot picks for any outdoor activities.’

  9. Tough to say, but he did grow up as a cop, so that might have something to do with it. Not all shoes work indoors.

Have a friend who was there when they medivac'ed him out after getting hit on the convoy in Iraq that swears he's the real shit.

Who knows, maybe it was the Ranger training. Some Army friends tell me that the Ranger school in a lot of ways is almost an indoctrination into "ears on & brain off" discipline. While maybe that "don't ask questions" / "go take that hill" thing is necessary in the Army (or with Air Force cops?), I like to think that since we recruit from at least a little closer to the top shelf we might as well use some of the brains that the Air Force always brags about us having. Then again he's been trying to beat SP's into line for twenty-plus years, and that's got to take a little objectivity out of you...

French smoker creates commotion on plane

    By A. Pawlowski, CNN

    January 14, 2011 11:39 a.m. EST

(CNN) -- A brawling smoker who turned his trans-Atlantic flight from France into something resembling a bar fight is facing criminal charges.

Franck Lebrun was on a Delta Air Lines flight from Nice, France, to New York last Saturday when things became tense, according to a complaint filed at the U.S. District Court in New York.

  11. MK, if I remember right there were a string of positive tests in the late 80s from bases in FL. Come to find out it was cross contamination at the test site.

Well that would just about suck. At the same time, as I said, it was the Miami Vice days of the 80's and from what I understand there was a lot available if you decided "to partake". Figured I'd be better off to stick with the booze and at that time the 21 year old drinking age, well, let's just say there was some 'leeway'.

Our dorm made Animal House look like kindergarten. Thought that was over when we got a new hard-assed, spit and polish, First Shirt from the Hospital Sqdn - until a couple of weeks later when on a surprise dorm inspection found his daughter busy 'supporting squadron morale'...

  12. When I first arrived at MacDill in '87 as a shiny new crew chief there was a lot of really bad juju between MX and OPS in our squadron. We were understaffed (due to a random pee-test of everyone in the AMU a couple of months before that busted out a full 25% of the unit - and even more of the younger ones)(Hey, it was the Miami Vice days and we were in Florida...) and they were overtasked with young student pilots (especially as we in MX were having trouble generating FMC acft). We all had a feeling that something bad was going to happen, like there was a train closing fast and we were ALL stuck on the tracks.

What happened? A group of us younger crew chiefs ran into a bunch of our IP's out at a local chicken wing establishment on a Tuesday night. Everyone had a good night (nickle wings AND nickle beer probably helped) and it grew into an unofficial weekly event. Within a few weeks of talking over wings and beer, we both came to understand a lot of the "other sides" issues and priorities, and in doing so, a lot of those issues disappeared. Now the AF wouldn't have looked highly on this alcohol and chicken wing-fueled "fraternization" but it worked for us.

Never could keep LOX in the jets on Wednesday mornings though...

  13. Well, I agree with Natalie... and perhaps the 'celebrity' quote of the year.

Natalie Portman: Everyone Loves Lesbian Sex Scenes

    By Alison Schwartz

    Thursday December 30, 2010 10:40 AM EST

How do you get both men and women to reach into their pockets to see a movie? The answer, at least for the moviemakers behind Black Swan, was simple: girl-on-girl action.

"Everyone was so worried about who was going to want to see this movie," the film's Golden Globe-nominated star Natalie Portman tells Entertainment Weekly. "I remember them being like, 'How do you get guys to a ballet movie? How do you get girls to a thriller?' And the answer is a lesbian scene. Everyone wants to see that."

In Darren Aronofsky's dark spin on the classic ballet Swan Lake – which is already garnering Oscar buzz – Portman, 29, shares a bed-rocking sex scene with a rival ballerina played by Mila Kunis, 27. The surprising hook-up was just one step in her on-screen transformation into the graceful but troubled Nina Sayers, a role she says quickly became life-consuming.

"There were some nights that I thought I literally was going to die," Portman says. "It was the first time I understood how you could get so wrapped up in a role that it could sort of take you down."

  14. Anyone want to guess which State will be the first to allow legal medicinal nutmeg? I'm going to be pissed if I have to show my drivers license at the grocery if I decide I want to bake a pie.

    Teens Get High Snorting Nutmeg

A sprinkle of nutmeg in eggnog or a pinch in apple pie can add the perfect punch to a holiday dessert. But winter's favorite spice has also made headlines as an unconventional way of getting high -- it's called a nutmeg high.

Nutmeg contains myristicin, a natural compound that has mind-altering effects if ingested in large doses. The buzz can last one to two days and can be hallucinogenic, much like LSD.

"It's the flavor of the month," said Dr. Jeffrey Bernstein, medical director at the center. "But most people only try it once because they have such nasty side effects. The rewards are not worth the risks."

  15. Had never read the full text of the speech before - would have liked to have heard it in person.

I was one of the guys waiting on the flightline for the F-16 and pilot hit by the SAM over Baghdad to return - along with a second from that flight. Was a long day, almost can't believe it's been 20 years...

  16. The fact that the guy interviewed says he doesn't edit and is skilled in turning a paragraph of useful information into pages and yet his work seems to do well with professors is pretty damn telling.

Now if he could turn those papers into Powerpoint presentations, he might just have something there...

  17. Have to admit, as much as I'd have liked to see the tournament return to the US, I'm interested in seeing what Qatar can do with the World Cup - just to see the changes that have taken place since I was there twenty years ago. Our Wing spent seven months living in tents in a field at the little base at the Intl Airport. (When we were there the pyramid-shaped Sheraton was by far the largest building in the city.)
