  1. Yeah, Sheppard sucks for those guys that end up in heavies. It was supposed to be an RC-135 but instead there was a picture of a MC-130 and it said Offutt AFB. It obviously wasn't done with any ulterior motives, just a simple mistake, but the most disconcerting part was no one from leadership or with a mic corrected it after it flashed up on the screen. It sucks enough to be one of the few that don't get FAIP/fighter (if you wanted it).

Duck is spot on, I think half of the leadership there thought that was a legit assignment.  It's dissapointing that by the time someone reaches O-5 can know so little about the rest of the Air Force (particularly when they are deciding the future of young Lt's).

  2. I've seen the 130 NAVs that bring their handy roller bag that they can sit on in the cockpit, any idea where to get those and if it is worth being identified as a NAV?

I think this is the one you are talking about http://www.zuca.com.  Looks like they have expanded their line quite a bit since the last time I saw them.  You can even get one with a unicorn and rainbow (requested by the nav community i assume), and IIRC they have one with rollerblade wheels that have lights in them.

  3. Honest question, why did you want to stay on the W with a chance to go to the U? I can't, while admittedly biased, can't see any reason to do so

    Think this was answered here...

Would you rather control the gun.. hit the button to fire.. or tell someone to do it?

  4. Right, I guess what I'm getting at is that there are smart people in that community and someone had to have done some critical thinking to realize at some point that the wavelengths seen through NVGs (to include IR pointers/strobes) are way different than what's listed for the Sniper IR range [in much the same way you wouldn't expect to see your IR laser designator in NVGs or TGP IR display], and then included it in training/pubs.

Or what about the hundreds of sorties flown by the Bone where they have never seen an IR strobe/pointer? What about the friendlies they were visual with, doesn't it seem odd you couldn't see their strobes either? I just don't see how this limitation has been overlooked for so long, with the various different platforms that carry this pod.

21 mins from 9-line to splash....doesn't appear that anyone was in much of a hurry. There was plenty of time to confirm friendly positions/unass the 9-line. 9-lines are methodical for that reason.

Agreed... Believe the investigation said they did three dry passes, before actually dropping. There was a discrepancy between BOT and BOC, plus poor comms leading to delayed clearance.

  5. Released investigation here:

13 years in this country and we are just now discovering the Sniper Pod cannot ID IR strobes, is this right?

There is a pervasive belief, held by all four members of the crew, other Air Force aviators, JTACs, and many ground units that Sniper Pods can detect IR strobes; relevant publications and references do not address this technical limitation

  6. Anyone do any Elk Hunting in NM? Seems like it would be worth the drive.

Depends on your area of interest. NM Game and fish post draw results and odds for each zone. Best areas are up north in the Lincoln national forest, or down further to the south near Ruidoso. I have drawn a bull tag two years in a row. I have not heard that vets go to the front of the lottery, but I do know a lot of people that drew out this year. I was not able to use my tag last year due to deployment, I could not get a refund and did not have better odds the following year as a result. They will let you transfer your tag to someone else though.

  7. Valid. But from my experience, the elbow pointing has gone by the wayside. Except for in the middle of a good game of crud.

Of course it has gone by the wayside you troglodyte. The only thing worse than taking yourself so seriously that you can't possibly say the word "head" or "box", or point at something you don't intend to kill is in fact playing a game of crud. At the Auger in no less!!
