I am a Captain and AH-64 pilot in the Army and have reached the point in my career where it is time to evaluate my options for continuing to serve and fly. I have visited the Air Force IST website and understand the procedural steps required to submit an application for a service transfer. However, what I really need to know is if it a realistic and feasible option to consider. I understand that a fixed wing slot is not an option and I am just fine with that, I love flying helicopters and want to continue to do so. If there is anyone on this forum who has direct knowledge of the IST process (specifically for Army rotary wing transferring to AF rotary wing) your input and advice would be greatly appreciated.

    My main questions are:

First and foremost, is this even a realistic option?

How seamless and/or convoluted is the process?

How does the training pipeline and aircraft selection process work for a rated Army aviator?

Thanks in advance to any and all who can provide guidance.

Totally doable, I had a buddy recently go AD Air Force from a 60 background in the army. He knew his aircraft and duty station before starting AD AF.

he got Huey’s and when the AF changes those over to their new aircraft he will get that as well.

    Shut up and color.

    Take your lumps and learn.

If you quibble, and it is quibbling, you may win the battle...but you may also lose the war.

And of course, the obvious answer, don’t fuck up the pattern and you won’t face this issue.

    pass me the crayons!

Thanks for the response. My plan is and has been to go and be a sponge. Adsorb as much as i can, put my best foot forward everyday, and help the folks around me succeed as well.

  4. Question for the group.

I have seen lots of posts about students shouldn't be hooking rides for the pattern-isms that are relatively small mistakes that can be corrected with table talk with their IP.

What would you all say to the student who is faced with this situation? What is the most appropriate way to address this? Is it even worth addressing?

Good info. I was curious about IFT. I have my commercial rotor wing license but zero fix wing time. My first fix wing flight could end up being in a T6. Might get some lessons here and there before UPT To somewhat understand the “flare” prior to touching down. In the helo world, we just come to a hover and land... I would rather skip IFT and go directly to UPT instead to having to attend IFT. Hope the rules haven’t changed.

Getting a couple hours won’t hurt but you would be surprised at how natural it feels still after all those auto rotations with a solid decel at IGE or a roll in landing in the 60

It's crazy how I just can't let this go.  I am so determined to do this and yet hate myself so much for my screw ups in life.

Just updating in case any gives a sh*t and of course I'm still open to input and advice on how to go about applying.  Anyone interested in reviewing my app??  Has anyone done the professional review by bogidope?

I can keep you all posted if anyone is interested to know how it turns out.

thanks for the updates! always good to see someone pressing forward against hurdles.

To answer your question, i did use the professional review by bogidope...and i highly recommend it.

  7. This doesn't directly help your issue, but i was in a lot of back pain recently and discovered some at home techniques that helped relieve quite a bit of the pain. I sent this on to a doctor to confirm that it would be safe, and they validated that this was a good technique. I hope this helps while you get all the other stuff figured out

It’s the blind leading the blind around here.  Reserve T-38s are for instructors in the 340th, spread around all the UPT bases and Randolph.  You (most generally) already are established in a major weapons system before you become an instructor in this unit.  I’ve heard of a very few (maybe 1) person getting hired with no experience to join the 340th.  Once in UPT you will be taught by these reserve Instructors when they are available but usually taught by active duty folks, there are way more of them.  The exception to all of this is the reserve T-38 red air bubbas, but they are not in the 340th.  Clear as mud?

edit:  the 340th also has T6 and T1 instructors.

do you know if the guard also has the same opportunities for folks to do short tours back at the training bases?

I think that's where I was mistaken. I thought there was a reserve t38 IP squadron or something. Got my thoughts all mixed up.

there may be, but i havent heard of anyone being hired for that role. thats probably more of a "after you have spent time at an operational squadron you can apply" kind of gig. im sure someone else may have better info.

Have you really? That gives me a lot of hope, though I feel as my age is really the biggest limiting factor. I'm hoping it can be overcome though.

It's not common, and I encourage you to consider @EvilEagle's advice. You are fighting an uphill battle. Some squadrons may be more receptive than others, but if you are only putting your eggs in one basket you may find out that you could have gotten a job somewhere else in another airframe sooner.

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking out on all fighters websites and contacting them to visit. I'm not letting anything get past me and hoping to put my best foot forward for each and every unit.

I've already taken it twice so I've exhausted that option. It is really risky because even if I took it again I'm never guaranteed that I would score higher. I've been told my PCSM, pilot, and GPA can thrust me through my other bad scores on the AFOQT. I just want to show up humble and ready to explain I'm ready to learn anything and everything and give it my best. My lower scores certainly don't define me as a person, I just hope I'm able to explain it well enough to get an interview!

boom...and this is what people are looking for. Don't be a douche and be the best you that you can be when you meet these folks or they will see right through the BS. I've seen people get hired at a fighter squadron with lower scores, but it's the whole person concept that will get you hired.

  12. numbers look pretty good. Have you spent time visiting squadrons yet? If not, that will be the biggest thing you can do to stand out in a good way. Also, dont limit yourself...apply everywhere and visit as many as you can...and dont forget to bring copious amounts of whiskey to every visit 😉 Good luck brother!

Meant as a joke, ok. I'm officially un-confused now.  What AF aircraft do you desired if selected for SUPT? Were you a Warrant or Commissioned?  If Commissioned, I assume it's a more difficult in going AD AF vs ANG/Res. Best of luck in reaching your goals.

its not more difficult. you basically are the same as an off the street hire in terms of training required (minus a couple items), but with a more paperwork (same paperwork hiring a pilot from any other branch). i had four interviews and two job offers as an already commissioned guy and it's been an awesome change. i know plenty of other former army bros WO and RLO how have been hired from everything from fighters, heavies, and RW. Opportunities are out there for sure.

That is pretty much what I’ve gathered. I’ve scheduled a AFOQT and just have to wait for my ADSO to run out and it’s game on. Hopefully I can make the change with any lapse in service. I have a few calls out to the local recruiters. I should hear something soon. Thank you for your response.

How much time is left on your ADSO? you will need to knock out a few things before you can make a quick turn around like that. Are you applying to Guard/Reserve squadrons or going AD?

I was a flt/cc is a squadron that was half enlisted aircrew. The amount of young kids that failed PT tests was surprising. Many of them were pretty thin dudes that I would have thought  wouldn’t have had issues. They just didn’t care or didn’t want to put the effort into physical training.

On another note, a got a brief last week from a new program AFSOC/SOCOM is standing up later this year. It’s going to be a staff of physical trainers, physical therapists, dietitians, dedicated to only aircrew. They are suppose to have their own gym, and biometric equipment for analysis of improvements.  Any aircrew on base can walk in and get help, and their services are suppose to be oriented to help aircrew better operate in their crew position. Having back issues being in the seat? Expect them to help get you on a training program to strengthen back muscles and focus on making it more comfortable. They were getting fam rides on the jets to become more familiar with our operating environment to better help us.  I walked in late but it sounded pretty awesome. It’s based off what the Army/Navy have for their spec ops teams, and the money is from SOCOM, so for now it’s only going to be a AFSOC thing.

To add some extra detail about those army programs (from a former army guy and also a DoD civ contractor who worked near one) those programs later transformed into what is now called an AWC. They are run by civilians and they contract allows them to see any uniformed members in any compo. So if you are near and army base that has one, stop by and they will put you through an assessment. It won't be geared towards your specific job necessarily, but think of them as case workers and they should be able to listen and tailor their recommendations appropriately.

Whats the deal with this bonus bros? Is the above applicable for UPT bound ANG?

Is big blue dangling the carrot for real? or is it a dog and pony show for the higher ups to look like they are doing something before their Friday afternoon T time.

Bonus is not for those going to UPT...and NGB cleared that up recently. Unfortunately for those who already applied and were given payment...they have to submit a waiver to not have the funds refunded back to DFAS
