Visited the forum from time to time, finally joined...

I'm an E8 nav heading to UAV's in November. Looking for some gouge on Vegas, Creech, the squadrons, etc. I volunteered btw, so no need for sympathy. :) my vegas experiences so far have been red/green flag related, so looking for info on N.Vegas, pace of life, anything you guys want to share. Looking forward to washing the isr stink off...Thanks for any info guys!

The northwestern suburbs of Las Vegas are not too bad and are about 45 minutes to an hour drive time to Creech. If I remember correctly there is a 'park and ride' for Creech personnel that live in Vegas - don't know if it is within Nellis proper or at another location. Certain areas of 'North Town' (North Las Vegas) are very low rent - don't go out there at night!

Gambling - the casino industry prefers 'gaming' - is EVERYWHERE. Off strip casinos are very much on par with Strip and Downtown but don't have the major traffic problem that is the Strip. Red Rock and Aliante are two of the nicest ones in the northwest corner of town. You'll find slot machines and video poker in bars, supermarkets, 7-11s, even laundromats! (In some places the slot route is a moneymaker, even though their main business ain't doing so great.) The days of slots and video poker machines noisily vomiting their coins in the hopper are pretty much gone in most casinos - they now issue printed paper tickets you trade for cash at the change booth. Life can be fast paced but it's not as ridiculous in Las Vegas (except on The Strip on weekends when the douchebags from Los Angeles come up to be seen as they lose their shirts on the tables).

While it's relatively easier to get around town from the far flung suburbs with the building of the 215 beltway, traffic can be a nightmare sometimes. On big holidays it's not unusual for traffic to back up on I-15 all the way to the California border (about 45 miles away as the crow flies).

Because of the depressed economy and high numbers of foreclosures, you can pick up a house cheaper now than a few years ago; just be sure the house you want doesn't have any problems.

Some of the other guys on the board can chime in about Creech and Nellis proper. Hope this helps.

I have been here a few months and went through the home buying process. Most of the Creech people live in either Aliante or Providence, which are around a 45-30 minute drive depending on how much you go over the speed limit. The areas around Nellis are sketch but if stick in the two areas I mentioned you should be good. There is a park and ride at 215 & 95 and the bus runs pretty often. Traffic does suck, especially if you are trying to get down to the strip. The housing market is still in the dirt. I bought a house for 131K that sold for 330K in 2006. PM for any Vegas house buying questions or for the name of a great Realtor. Creech itself looks like a deployed location but being able to live in Las Vegas isn't half bad.

Ditto on what the other guys said about life in Vegas. I go to the strip every other month at most. Zion, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, and Tahoe are all within a half day's drive.

By the way, you volunteered for drones to wash off your ISR stink? Let me know how that works out for you...

Stay West of Loosee along the 215 or west of 95 as far south as summerlin and you will be able to find plenty of ammenties to suit your lifestyle whatever that may be. Finding "bargain" houses to buy since January has been difficult for everyone I have talked to unless you are willing to pay a premium (20-30k more) for new construction and even then people doing that are having to wait two months for the houses to be completed before they can move in. One really popular option is finding a short sale that you can rent until the deal closes. Only problem is the deal may never close... The foreclosures that are available for the most part are being bought up by investors from California paying cash, so submitting an offer that is contingent on lender approval makes banks less likely to accept your offer even if you are willing to pay more. However if you are willing to rent though you will have tons of options.

Thanks for the info guys. We're coming out in July once I get back from the desert to house shop. I'm paying cash, so hopefully I can find something...As far as the ISR thing, well this will in all probability be my last PCS before I pull the handle so I was mainly interested in something other than RJ's & *gag* AWACS so I volunteered. I have no aspirations beyond 3-4 years. :)

What's the best way to find a rental property out there? Use craigslist?

I really need to figure out who's my sponsor
