Yaounde, Cameroon - The Yaounde Hilton was a dump! There's a nauseating smell in the air, inside hotel, and your room (I think it was the locals). The rooms are clean and free of insects, however, the water IS NOT potable and the water color is light brown. Two nights were spent here, the first night the water ran clear after 15 minutes; the second night the water stayed light brown. Disgusting!!! The restaurant in the hotel is suitable. There is at least something on the menu an American will eat. Bring bottles of water from the jet for consumption and brushing teeth. Do not consume drinks with ice cubes. I highly recommend you do not leave the hotel due to force protection issues unless you are with embassy staff. Do not use your personal credit card anywhere .. only use the GTC. The drive from the airport (FKYS) to the hotel is 30 minutes at night (no traffic) and up to an hour during the day (traffic). Your bus driver and other drivers on the highway are going to scare the living daylights out of you. Enjoy. Bring a Verizon world-wide cell phone, it works better than the Iridium. The hotel only has internet in a business center with limited hours. It is extremely slow and will take up to an hour to download crew IMT papers at a cost of about $60. We tried using the hotel fax and business center fax for crew IMT papers, but they never worked. The embassy might be able to hook you up with this.
