  1. Years ago, in between the golf and the excessive drinking at SOS, I recall sitting in a briefing with some 3 star (who turned out to be a fairly good crud player). He said something along the lines of: How often have you watched or read a piece of journalism regarding an area in which you are a subject matter expert and saw all sorts of glaring errors in their material? So why do you believe what they put out when it concerns an area that you are not familiar with?

    This.

  2. Is this the right thread?.... I have a Ferrari I'd like to trade/sell. It looks too awesome and It's too fast and I've been picking up too many chicks. I'm looking for an early 80's Datsun or Peugeot. Preferably an automatic.

    Thanks

    Well done...

  3. Interesting, are they deployed as 62's? The only ones I've seen deploy were voluntary either as JCAT or random 16G billets. All I can tell you is I work with a bunch of 62s and they all think they are non-deployable....and our boss is on their DT and he says they are non-deployable.

They deploy as 62s...DCMA type jobs as well as what has been mentioned above. 62s/63s are on normal AEF cycles.

  4. Don't get overly excited about your discovery flights. By all means do them but keep in mind, flying a 172 around the pattern has about as much to do with employing an A-10/C-17/whatever as, well, it sounds like. You may fly once, hork your lungs out and have a miserable time. Doesn't mean you wouldn't grow to like it once you got past airsickness. You may love solo flying a bug smasher day-VFR but loathe flying heavy metal at night, crappy weather on the other side of the planet with a crew.

I work with several guys whose total flight experience is a few rides in a bug smasher. From that they have extrapolated a whole lot of theories of military flight that have zero basis in reality. A little knowledge ain't always a good thing.

I also happen to work with a lot of developmental engineers. Have you talked with any? The life/career of an AF engineer has absolutely nothing in common with the lifestyle of any form of military flying ('some' crossover in test world). Lemme give you two quick but major differences, you will work more with civilians than military and your AFSC is non-deployable. Also, hope you like Dayton. They work on really cool stuff but are not necessarily doing cutting edge research. Realize that engineers are part of the acquistions world, you're buying stuff contractors built.

This is not an attack on the engineer career field, guys I know are all good dudes and enjoy what they do. But you owe it to yourself to talk to some. The negatives you've read here have nothing to do with that world. Well...ok, they still have to wear blues and do CBTs but they only way they'll see Al Udied is on tv.

As for retirement, it's probably a safe bet you're right. My guess--as worthless as the rest--is that they'll keep the retirement but cut COLA. They can say you still get the retirement even as it becomes worthless. Regardless, don't sell your soul for the retirement, stay in because you like it.

Bad info, 62/63s (engineers and PMs) are deployable. Know a few dudes down range right now.

  5. Back from the dead? Who would have seen this coming - maybe it's not all about the budget, or even capability (because if you can get less capability for more cost, how can you not just jump all over that).

New recommendations will stop the USAF from retiring the Block 30 Global Hawks and the C-27J's.

Also will provide additional funding for:

    - 17 C-27J's (to a total of 38)

    - a continuation of the C-130 AMP program

    - 1 C-130J, 2 HC-130J's and 2 MC-130J's

    - 12 MQ-9 Reapers

    - 10 Black Hawks (National Guard)

    - 3 EADS Light Utility Helos (Lakota's? - National Guard)

    - 11 additional F/A-18 Super Hornets (to 37 from 26)

    - 1 additional V-22 Opsrey, one Bell UH-1Y helicopter, one Bell AH-1Z helicopter, five Sikorsky MH-60R helicopters and two Lockheed Martin KC-130J tanker transports

    - PAC-3 Patriot missiles and launch systems

    - $$ to keep the M1 Abrams production line open from a planned temporary shutdown

    - Upgrades to Bradley fighting vehicles

    - Army NG Humvee modernization

    - 1 additional Navy DDG-51 destroyer and $$ to retain three cruisers

And $$ for a Raptor "back up" oxygen system and $500 million in cuts to the F-35 program.

C-130 AMP has GOT to go. 12 years with 3 modified aircraft, which have major issues still to work through. Terrible

  6. Agree! No fly off needed...just put them next to each other on the ramp....Super T hands down!

I have heard that hawker's propsal could not result in a successful aircraft. Performance aside, Hawker is a nightmare to work with on the T-6...that alone should be enough to convince folks. On the other hand, SNC is probably the best defense contractor to work with, not to mention they have a lot of experience in buying CDA and modding them.

  7. The more people you have working for you the more shit you can get done for your boss. An O-6 can pull more people than an O-5 and on up the line. Flyers are generally better at stuff (to include satisfying bullshit taskers) so they are most in-demand.

As long as the bullshit keeps increasing like it has been, the Exec roster at all levels will get bigger.

Flyers are generally better at stuff, to include BS taskers? C'mon man.
