    Hey all,

I was selected for UPT by a Guard unit and was wondering if anyone could give me some thoughts on where my timeline will go from here, how long to expect in between. Some background, I'm currently in the Naval Reserve with my DD-368 being processed. Fwiw I took the AFOQT back in 2014 as well, retook it summer 2018.

    Sept 6 '18-  AFOQT

    Nov 2 '18 - Interview

    Nov 6 '18 - Hired

    Dec 11 '18 - DD368 Submitted to Program Office

Jan '19 - DD368 marked for approval by program office - off to NAVPERS for approval.

    Feb 2019 - FC1

Some issues with FC1 sitting on desks and paperwork to be gained, but eventually:

    Jan 2020: Gained to unit.

The way I hear it is all IFT/UPT dates are fall-out as this point, does anyone have any recent news on this front? Would prefer not to have to wait 8 months, but also would like more than 3 days...or a weeks notice.

    IFT: ???

    UPT: ???

    Possibly SERE/aquatic survival before?

    Thanks everyone.

I am on the same boat. My application is still floating somewhere in NGB land looking for approval. I can’t swear until I have ARB approval at NGB. My 368 has expired 3 times while sitting on somebody’s desk.

I should start a new tread that reads “bastard child from another branch” and what you should expect during the process.

Are you Navy fighters going Blue? If so, you have an advantage vs us dirty army guys going heavies. Fighters are priority all across the board from what I understand (NGB & AFR). Their applications move faster thru the process.

Oh well... get after it fellas. Staying proactive is the key for sure.

    Cheers 🍻

Ah this doesn't give me hope...I'm sure my 368 has expired by now..

It's tough to believe I was hired a year ago and am still going through the process, but there's light at the end of the tunnel finally.

I've a buddy who got hired in Sept 2017, our Naval IRR unit didn't get his 369 submitted until Dec after they released that Navadmin saying Navy wouldn't release anyone. He finally got his FC1 done late April '19....keep pressing.

    Timeline for guard heavy unit.

    UPT selection board - 28 March 2018

    Selection notification - 9 April 2018

    FC1 - 27 August 2018

    FC1 stamped - 10 October 2018

    Dates received - 15 April 2019  (TFOT 30Jul) (IFT14Nov) (UPT?)

Any idea why it took 8 months post FC1 and 6 months from the stamp for your dates?

I'm 3.5 months out from FC1, unofficially told I passed 2.5 months ago and now radio silence.

I don't need TFOT, so hoping to get IFT dates that start in Nov or Dec..

As long as you have your ATP with 1500 hours, you’re competitive.

The airlines currently are able to keep up with the retirements but that will soon change and they all know it.

United, for example, is continuously adding new classes and they currently are having classes with 30-40 new hires in them.

Unless something drastic happens, all pilots will have job security.

I'm gettin ahead of myself as I'm waiting for UPT orders, not sure if I would want go airlines yet but it's nice to look into options. There's a lot between now and then of course.

But, out of curiosity, does the 750 hours mark mean nothing for the airlines? And you mention the amount of new hires being brought in. How long do you industry guys foresee the hiring going on for? Another 5 years, say? A lot can change in that time, I'm just trying to form an idea of what my future may look like as a future part time guard guy.

Sitting wide body reserve, I went for 105 days without flying at 76 hours paid per month although I normally averaged 1 trip per month.  This month, I'm working 12 days (4 trips) for 91 hours.  Just depends on what you want to do.

As someone heading to UPT for the guard at some point soon, if I decide to change from my engineering career...this is what I would want haha.

Heh, not the best place for this comment to drop in given the current discussion

Hey all, just trying to figure something out about what all I need to do before the MFS...conflicting info from a recruiter (seems to be the norm here). I filled out my DOD2807 when I went to MEPS and marked down a few things like getting tonsils removed, wisdom teeth, having contacts, etc. Do I fill out a new 2807 for the MFS? Or do they use the same one? And do the records that MEPS creates go to Wright Pat? Just trying to figure out if I need to get those records again (NBD since I was a dependent and Tricare's online records are great) or if MEPCOM even talks to the folks who do MFS.

I had my recruiter tell me to not list anything but the above at MEPS, but since Wright Pat has Tricare records, am I screwed? Will they come after me for not disclosing the random sore throat I had at age 15 at MEPS? Or the time I had bronchitis and they put the words "chest tightness"?

Flying is my dream, so I want to follow the right process and not screw it up.

    Thanks in advance.

You're going to fill out a new DD2807 and send it in a week or so before you arrive. Just stay congruent is my advice. I believe the folks at WP will have access your Tricare and MEPS (ime in the reserves they had some stuff but not everything since I'd commissioned into another branch so I'm really not sure) but they're only going to pull the applicable ones. My suggestion is obviously to not outright hide anything, but some things aren't necessary to share and to be honest, they don't want to deal with more paperwork for something minor if they don't have to. If they have found something they're interested in then they will ask you about it during your med background interview while you're there. But they're not going to grill you over it and nothing you said seems disqualifying.

Don't overthink it. They want you to succeed.

I believe he's saying there has been a massive overall erosion of the quality of a Guard/Reserve career in the last 5 years. It will not get better.

Older folks are seeing fewer good deals (Coronet Oak) and fewer opportunities to augment their paycheck.

    Increasing mission/currency/training/deployment requirements. Decreasing manning/funding.

Every aspect the of job is increasing in complexity at exponential rate. What were once simple tasks are bureaucratic nightmares that depend on technology that doesn't work.

That said, it is possible to Heisman a lot of BS. As a new guy, please enjoy the fact that you will get to fly. Be competent, current, and safe, but do not become overly invested in anything outside of manipulating the controls of an aircraft. It will not pay dividends. Spend your ambition and energy building a solid life/career outside the AF/ANG/AFR.

Thanks. I needed to read this. I've been trying to envision my future with my civilian job and balancing that with UPT coming up and then seasoning and of course UTA and deployments and then trying to balance my personal life, if I start a family etc. Obviously one step at a time, but it's nice to have insight. Career ambitions and goals and what's important evolve as an individual does and I like to have a rough plan ahead. Your last paragraph helped put things in perspective for me, just need to figure out how to balance it all.

Thank you for your response!  It definitely is a "how bad do you want it" type of deal.  Just gotta eat the costs to hope to be in the same position as you one day.

You can also just wait until you're at a better spot in your life. Idk what your situation is but there's never going to be a perfect time where everything just lines up. But there are better times than others to make something happen if you want it to. Just something to keep in mind.

Is it a bad look if you reject an invitation visit a unit?  Due to my proximity, it's just not financially possible for me to make two round trips (assuming I get an interview).

I wouldn't say definitively either way but me visiting my unit before I submitted my application almost certainly helped to get an interview. I may have been given an interview if I didn't visit because of my resume but I can't say for sure and I don't regret going for a visit beforehand. Yes, it absolutely sucked financially to schedule two round trip flights while working on my PPL. Was it worth it? Well, I'm waiting for UPT so that's up to you. My advice is to search one-way on google flights (incognito so cookies don't raise your search dates) and find the cheapest flights not on the same carrier both ways. I was able to piecemeal like that, hell I took one airline to a connection and then another to my destination but that's a dangerous game to play...

It’s sad to have seen the foundation of this process being laid out around 2013-15 time frame. AD pressuring the the Guard with a full court press in so many areas we couldn’t keep up (we’re undermanned in staff on so many programs vs Big Blue) and our higher leadership distracted with so many events to let the whole enchilada slip by. Gov shutdowns, Sequestration, limiting flying slots to the ARC as barter material, C-130H units left to hang out in the wind fighting for mission sets, niche missions being pressured, overtaken or dissolved, Long term Caribbean/South America missions being shared/dispersed to the AD, Afghan flight training, mixing of ANG assets from keeper jets to in the pool, etc, etc, etc, it’s “divide and conquer” even though we had the edge politically on many fronts which has been eroded significantly every year. States with more than two or even one unit were and still are under attack. ANG leadership did pushback, we workerbees concurred and promised that a max exodus would ensue at some point if we could not plug the dam. Too many holes, not enough plugs, let alone anything useful to turn the tide as I can see now. Anthrax was one thing, this is another where feet will do the talking unfortunately... I went to an AOC in 2015 and as I was leaving in 2017 the deployment billets which they had always been protected from started to come down.

Foundation of wood and rebar constructed 2013-15, cement churned and laid down over units periodically 2015-2017 (backshops) and now the cement is beginning to cover and harden as the new normal 2017-2019. Typical 5 year plan. Sorry we were unable to change hearts and minds of our Leaders which leads to voting by feet.

Concur: 20 years and over will split, those with 10-15 years or less depart if they can and 15-19years have the hardest decision to make.

Mind explaining what this means for guys just getting into it? I know quite a few like myself who have a few years in from another services (reserves) and just got picked up in the last year for UPT. How will this effect us? I don't understand half the acronyms thrown around here but everyone seems sour and it's pretty concerning. Especially if what we were sold on (deployment lengths) is going to be pulled out from under us.

@Insert name, I'm in a similar boat as you - waiting on my med to get stamped so I can swear in, sign my DD368 and send that in, and then finally get dates. How long ago did your phys get sent in?

I completed my medical late Feb, got a call last week from my unit I had passed but that it still needs to go through the paperwork drill before it's approved and then my packet gets sent to NGB so, similarly to you, I can be gained and then get dates.

Will be interesting to see how this goes, have you heard anything about lead time outside of what we've seen on the forum here?

  13. On 3/15/2019 at 12:06 PM, JustHangingOut said:

I would say 6-7 months for school once you are gained in the unit. I was gained in late december, received IFT dates in Feb for a May date and UPT dates for October. Other guys in the pipeline with my squadron have closer timelines where they are all back to back. Make sure you also check with the security manager that they have started your TS paperwork as well or NGB wont let you swear in until your investigation is open (not complete or even started...but status of "open"). That was a big head ache for me towards the end that added some time to the whole process.

Ok, thanks for the info. Haven't started any TS work yet, but I'm also not gained into the unit yet either. Med has been passed but not stamped/approved and sent through the chain. Was your unit able to request IFT and UPT dates at the same time for you, or do you need to complete IFT before getting UPT dates? At this point, it's looking like I won't get into UPT until 2020 or possibly later if it's 8 months lead time?

Also, in the guard, could you help to clarify what happens between parts of the pipeline? My understanding before was you go back to your job. But, speaking with my unit they said they were going to cut orders for IFT-UPT-and individual aircraft all in one go. I can't see this all being back to back, is there any word what you do in between, I heard mention of being stashed at headquarters, would this be NGB in Arlington?

    Thanks again for any info!

    • 25 Feb 19: School Dates Received (starting UPT fall 2019 and bypassing IFT)
      • hoping for a shortfall to get a sooner class date...anyone want to trade

Hey, congrats on getting the dates and through the process, it's pretty grueling...quick question for ya, if you don't mind.

We're looking at 6-7 months out for school dates, now? I'm waiting on my med to be stamped, then need paperwork sent to NBG and then gained by my unit (transferring as O from other reserve branch.)

I still have to go to IFT as well, any idea if the wait for IFT is the same amount of time? And to my understanding UPT can't be requested until IFT has been completed?

    Thanks

I’ve had some really great years out of the 23 I’ve been in. But these idiots have no idea what they are doing. None of the people in charge have ANY idea of the TR’s life and commitments to family and other careers. That’s criminal, negligent, and may end up costing us the AFRC we knew and barely tolerated.

We are just starting to hemorrhage pilots and the airlines are just starting to hit the huge retirement numbers. And AFRC says, “hey AD, hold my beer!”

Glad my retirement papers are in and ~3000 under me at the other job. But I’m sad for those that are stuck as ARTs or those still entangled in commitments. Many of my best friends are wondering ‘what now?’ and ‘why?’

GET OUT or change jobs before you get tasked. These people don’t care about you, your family or your life.

As soon as the unit hired me my recruiter  started MEPS paperwork and got the scroll stuff going. I think it took about 4 months. I’ve heard of it taking up to 9. And you can’t swear into the reserves until the scroll is done. So I’d expedite getting that rolling. Got a bro from the navy who was navy IRR, selected by an afrc board, stuck awaiting the scroll and had to give up his original UPT date and get a later one because the scroll wasn’t done.

What is scrolling? I haven't run into that term before.

I'm not sure exactly how you are getting yours done, but I scheduled one recently. However, I am Active Duty already and was able to schedule it through my local clinic. They were very busy though.

As far as the government shutdown. The DoD had been funded already and the shutdown did not affect us at all. So that shouldn't be the issue here.

Thanks for the info. I'm going through a Guard unit but currently in the Naval reserve, so I'm unsure if I have to wait for my conditional release before I can get medical dates or not and if there's anything I can do on either end to push things along.
