I cant imagine it will be as easy as just not signing the memo. Sure you don't have to sign the memo, but I can't imagine they will send you to OTS.

Now if you are talking about the people that are already in UPT, then I can see how that could work. It will be a mess if a large majority say no thanks after already getting through the program. AFRC will have to decide if they are willing to loose current trainees and future applicants over this commitment.

I have heard there are people trying to get out of the commitment, through waivers I believe,  who have civilian jobs they do not want to lose. This might be the way out future selects as well, but just not signing the memo doesn't seem like it would work.

I can imagine its that easy. The reserve commitment that you sign becomes valid upon package submission to the AFRC board. They can't go back and time and make you sign a different commitment, which I think is why they've realized its not enforceable for any of the boards that have already convened. I think they're happy for anyone they can coerce into re-signing due to the language of the memo, but I don't think they actually have any legal standing to enforce it unless the original commitment you sign is the "new" one. That's at least the message they're passing down to the recruiters as well. So please, ask questions before you re-sign anything!

On a similar thought, is there any taboos about applying to multiple guard/reserve units at once?  How would you disclose that without sounding like a tool?  My background: I’m an AD Herk guy that won’t have a plane to fly in a year which coincides with my UPT commitment.  If I got out I would be looking to fly  civilian and continue to serve.  I’m not tied to airframes or location per se; however getting picked up would obviously then limit my options if my goal would be to base in an area where I can access both guard/reserve and the airlines.

My local base has three squadrons that I was rushing, and they all had different opinions on this. They all understood I would apply and hang out with people from all three local squadrons, but one chief pilot was of the opinion that if you weren't applying everywhere else, it was an indication you weren't actually that motivated to join the reserve. The other two CP's thought this was crazy and that if you were local/established in the area, believed in the mission, and got along great with the group why would you apply elsewhere (unless you were turned down).

I ended up not applying elsewhere, sticking to my guns on why I loved it there so much, and still getting picked up at the next boards. I strongly believe that everyone's background and circumstances are different, and as long as you don't act like a tool, you won't be seen that way.

Were you non prior service? I still haven't sworn in yet. Supposed to next week.

Yes, NPS. Was supposed to swear in last week and inprocess next week but was delayed a little with paperwork. They were ok to keep my September OTS and inprocess the week before I ship out- sounded like that was non-standard and they prefer 30 days prior. I specifically asked to be gained as quickly as possible; nice folks over there.

It's not an active reserve position, (AGR), it's an Air Reserve Technician position.

Technically the memo says AGR or ART.

Edit: The memo itself says ART, but I got a copy of the new Memorandum of Understanding applicants are expected to sign, and it says "I understand that if selected for Undergraduate Flight Training, I agree to serve a total of six years in a full-time status. This six-year period of service will consist of Title 10 active military status for the initial formal school training courses followed by a dual-status (Title 5/Title 10) term developmental Air Reserve Technician position or in the Active Guard-Reserve (AGR) program, based on the needs of the Air Force Reserve. This six-year period of service shall commence upon entry into the first formal school training."

For those concerned about USERRA, there is a clause in there that states the five years can be extended as required to meet service requirements due to training costs, I would guess this falls under that clause. Not saying it makes it much better, but it's something.

Has anyone recently selected from the June board been sworn in and received any dates?

I'm slated for September OTS (9/14 start). I just started calling around, the 340th desk number is available on Google.

What that means is that AFRC will probably lose a lot of applicants who have already developed extensive professional and leadership experience before applying since quitting a six figure civilian job with good benefits is more appealing than earning $40k a year with no benefits and being stuck there for 6 years.

    ^ This.

    Hear from squadron or recruiter?

I think they're sent to squadron commanders and recruiters, but maybe at different times? I have better contact with my recruiter, but she says they don't have any results yet, so I guess I'm stuck waiting on a call from the commander.

    EDIT:

Recruiter just called and she did get the email, I'm in! :D

AFRC's problem: Hiring and retaining pilots

Solution: Enacting a new program that makes it such a bad deal that nobody wants to join.

    Great job AFRC.

After talking with folks at my sponsoring unit, they firmly believe this is an OPTIONAL program. They are of the opinion that this is being circulated and misunderstood, and that AFRC shouldn't have the ability to make this huge of a change a requirement across the board. So I guess stay tuned until we find out more.

I guess I'm confused - but what does this mean? Current commitment is 10 years right? So isn't 6 a good thing?

As it stands, the 10 year commitment is for traditional reserve. This change requires you to hold an active reserve position (ART) for 6 years of your commitment. That basically translates to a full time job on base- 5 days a week.

Unfortunately I have not seen anything posted or heard any rumors. I want to call and ask my recruiter, but know he will call as soon as he finds something out.

As of today: "None of us have heard any board results.. It usually does not take this long."

  10. Well...

That really blows. I saw the memo from my recruiter and what last_chance says is true, it's for any UFT graduates after 01 Dec 2016. Pretty rough for those of us who have worked out commitments and return plans with our civilian jobs. Requires you to hold an ART position after training until your six years are up, and seems to be a kneejerk response to backfill instructors (possibly being lost to the airlines?) Either way, sounds like to me a way to dissuade people to join at all, especially if they see themselves less than 6 years from a job at the majors. I'm not an airline guy, but I definitely had an understanding of what this all would look like.

Seems like nobody is talking about the June AFRC board unlike years past. Is there a shortage of applicants again this year? Anybody hear anything back yet?

Still radio silence. Trying to follow all the excellent advice I've been given and not hold my breath, but its so... damn... hard....

If you all are referring to 16OT04, the package due date is next week. 24ish June. Which means we won't get notified until (more than likely) after Labor day. This info is from AD LO recruiters directly. This follows suit with the last rated board in January. Packages due at the end of the month and notifications coming out late March/early May.

I think most of the recent discussion has been around the AFRC boards. To my knowledge, they do not line up with the 16OT04 dates.

did any of you receive any notification that your package was actually received by the board? Or did you recruiter/sponsoring unit just submit and cross their fingers till results come out?

I assumed that was the case, but just ran it by my recruiter. Apparently there was a mass confirmation email that went out this week, you could probably check in to find out. Not sure if it went to my sponsoring squadron as well, or just the recruiter.

As the title says - thanks! Also, where can you find the results of the board?

Here's the limited info I have from my recruiter: For the June Board applications are due 18 May. I do not have the exact date that the June board convenes although I assume it will be the first Monday of June. Last year packages were due 31 Oct and Board results came out Dec 9, so following that pattern results should be out early July.
