  1. Google works great also or the AF E-publishing website. Second "Pro tip" the AF publishes all this stuff, third "pro tip" most if not all AFROTC regulations start with AFROTCI 36-XXXX.

The reg you are looking for is AFROTCI 36-2010

    13.2 Authorization for Orientation Flights.

13.2.1. The detachment commander is the designated authority to approve orientation flights for cadets, applicants, and institutional officials IAW AFI 11-401, Aviation Management, Table 1.1, line 14 and the AETC Supplement to AFI 11-401, paragraph 1.9.4.7.1.6.3. NOTE: Cadets under legal age (18 years in most states) require parental approval in writing.

Now I do know some buddies who called a squadron who they had heard gives incentive rides for a donation to the squadron bar, got their availability and then went to the Det/CC. Technique only, I don't know your Det/CC so that's your call.

Now to add even more confusion.

Orientation flights are different than incentive flights.

Orientation flight = an hour or so in a CAP 172/182 with a CAP instructor - You're only limited to 4 hours I think. At least it's how it was at my Det.

    Incintive flight = military aircraft

  2. A good friend of mine was talking about how he went to some shindig in RI for the all the military academy selects that was being thrown by a congressman who had given both of them a nomination. He was drinking a beer and she walked up to him and said "I hope you get that out of your system now because you will not be allowed to drink as a freshman when we get out there and there is an honor code and I will have to turn you in. In fact, I'm not sure if you are not in violation of the honor code right now since you are under age and consuming alcohol."

    You betcha.

Sounds like my 2nd PAS when I was in ROTC....

  3. I would have posted this in the Future Raptor Pilot thread, but it's closed. This guy might have been his roommate.

"I am unequivocally the most unflaggingly hard worker I know, and I love self-improvement. I have always felt that my time should be spent wisely, so I continuously challenge myself ... I decided to redouble my effort by placing out of two classes, taking two honors classes, and holding two part-time jobs. That semester I achieved a 3.93, and in the same time I managed to bench double my bodyweight and do 35 pull-ups."

  4. I have to admit, that might be one the better versions of the National Anthem I have heard in a long time.

I was thinking the same thing. When I hear the National Anthem at an event, I don't want the most famous person they could get singing it (who, if they're part of the Hollywood/LA crowd is probably anti-American commie scum anyways), I want it to sound damn good and sung by someone who cares.

Couples Having Sex In A Coffin That’s Buried In A Dumpster…WTF?

Apparently the mile high club isn’t good enough for some people. In San Francisco (obviously), a group of people decided to change things up a bit by having sex in a coffin, which was buried under a bunch of dirt in a dumpster. The group involved where making a statement against the lack of privacy in the age of the internet. You can get all the fine details over at SFWeekly’s Blog but first be sure to watch this interesting video below…

From the land of fruits and nuts!

  6. Not mine, but Brian Shul sure has a knack for writing...

I read his book, Sled Driver. I checked it out from my school library and went to my car to put it up and eat lunch. I decided to read one page of it and I found myself done reading it about two hour later, sitting in the passenger seat of my car still in the parking lot with goosebumps. It was hands down one of the best books I have ever read. He has such a knack for taking those memories and retelling them with all the details that you would have to be there to notice. Walter also came and spoke to my school and although I didn't get to catch his whole talk, it really put a lot of what Mr. Shul talked about in the book into perspective. The whole experience is amazing. I'm actually considering plopping down the $300-400 for the book before I can't get one for good.

  7. The last AOPA e-newsletter had a pretty cool story, it looks like he did IFS also. Maybe he was some of you guys' IP.

I always wanted to see how fast I could get an F-15, so one day I decided to use the extra gas that I would have in the traffic pattern for the Mach run. Mach 1.5 came and went. Then Mach 2.0. As I looked around the jet, I saw a beautiful sight of prismatic colors shimmering over the intakes where the sun was being refracted through the shock waves that were forming over the jet. My logbook entry shows a top speed of Mach 2.21 and a groundspeed of 1,384 knots, where I finally had to stop because I was running out of fuel and airspace. To help me slow down I did a zoom climb up to FL500 and received the best surprise of the day. Looking out toward the horizon, I could see the curvature of the brown earth below, a small piece of blue sky above, and above all that I could see black. I was looking into space!

Makes me wish I did some things different in my life so I could do it also.

  8. How many hours can you get out of the David Clark 13.4s? I am looking at a few used pairs that range from "10-20 uses" to "300 hours." I will use them for about 20 hours on the civilian side and possibly IFS (want to avoid other people's sweaty headsets).

They will last a long, long time with proper care. You will probably have to replace the gel ear cups after about 300hrs (that's how long mine lasted- $30), maybe replace the mic wind fuzzy thing ($10), and if anything else is wrong, I understand they have a 5 year warranty. I ended up selling mine for a higher end headset before I got to test the warranty though.

The problem is clearly the size of the A340. It's obviously way too large for that runway, much less the airport. I mean, for Christ's sake, the landing gear is over the edge of the runway, not to mention it retracts into the wing like the Dash/Q400 aircraft. Now that Fox News gave me an animation, the A340 is so much larger than the 777, I don't think the pilots would feel it, maybe a bump on takeoff.

A quick Google Earth calculation gave the LH plane about 6700' till the offending a/c.

    From the NY Post link

"The FAA rated the incident a “Category C” runway incursion, and says “there was ample time and/or distance to avoid a collision.”

    More media sensationalism.

    wtf news media?

  10. Does anyone have recommendations for books on civilian pilot training? I am foregoing ground school (for now), but would like some literature to read about what the instructor is teaching me. They suggested a $100 textbook and I would appreciate it if some of you know cheaper alternatives.

I taught using the Complete Private Pilot by ASA because it was cheap. I liked it too. <---my fav self teaching book

    http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Private-Pilot/dp/1560276118/ref=dp_ob_title_bk

This is the industry standard though. It's a little more expensive, but you can get a cheap used copy.

    http://www.amazon.co...25529242&sr=8-2

Oh and I almost forgot. The books published by the FAA are free and they are really good also. Just google "Airplane Flying Handbook" and "Pilot Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge"

  11. Seems they're flying again (no surprise). I wonder what they've been using them for. It would be neat to seem them in person again. I remember being at an airshow and one did a low pass and you could not hear it till it was right on you. It wasn't even moving at a really high speed either.

  12. Some of you are probably going to laugh at this setup, but woot.com has a Mr. Brew starter kit for $25 today. I went on and ordered it since I've been thinking about getting into brewing. Even if the beer isn't great, it will be a cheap way to get my feet wet before I go all out with the expensive stuff.

  13. WOMAN STORES UP SEMEN FROM USED CONDOMS TO GET PREGNANT W/O MAN'S KNOWLEDGE

Careful gentlemen! It's a crazy world out there.

And then I found another article that is even crazier.

    http://www.topix.com...76UD289PGQSGSCN

May have to rewrite some TTP's for egress.

    Best quote from that.

Oral sex eventually resulted in pregnancy, which is obviously impossible, and testifies to premeditated fraudulent intentions of the woman, the court said. The judge added, however, that it was not correct to accuse Irons of sperm theft. Ejaculation was a gift of the plaintiff. Furthermore, there was no agreement that the original deposit would be returned upon request, the decision said.
  14. Sounds pretty cool to me. I don't know much about the water/hail ingestion limits, but aren't all the current storm chasers turboprops right now? Besides the facts that they are all well proven airframes, I wonder if it has anything to do with the intakes?

The A-10 replaces a T-28, a small, single-propeller armored plane that flew into storms for 35 years before it was grounded in 2005.

That sounds nerve wracking in a single engine piston aircraft!

  15. It's ok, they'll fly again soon.

    As targets. :)

    http://www.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123219224

The first QF-16 is scheduled to be delivered in 2014. The QF-16 will replace the QF-4, the third generation full-scale aerial target drone.

I imagine that they will be pulling the F-16s from DM for this unless they have some stored somewhere else. Anyone know if they are going to Mojave to modify them like the Phantoms? I saw one of the QF-4s taxing around at MHV a couple summers ago and it was a neat sight for sure.

  16. So...

Last August/September, I signed up for AFROTC as an AS250. While filling out the paperwork, I wrote down that I had smoked marijuana 10 times. I did not have a drug problem, no desire to ever smoke again, and this in no way affects me whatsoever, etc. I also have never had any traffic violations or any criminal/legal/financial problems at all. Well my Det commander (my whole cadre was new at the time) signed the paper, "waived" the prior drug use, and said it was all good.

During the past year, I've dedicated 110% of my energy to succeeding in ROTC. I've spent 3+ hours, several times a week, commuting to get to ROTC classes, LLAB, FTP, and whatever extra training I had to attend. Not the bare minimums, but I attended every single event that my schedule allowed me to. About 5-10 times, I've slept on the couch at my detachment so I could be there early enough in the morning for the PFA, or mandatory parade practices because public transportation wasn't open that early. I joined MECT and have gotten over 95 on every PFA. I've gotten 4.0s in every AS class and have a 3.22 GPA overall, with two majors and a minor. I got an EA last spring, likely being ranked towards the top of my class. I won several awards at the end of the year and got DG at Field Training. My PAS told me that what I've done in ROTC was "inspiring" and I know my cadre supports me. I also had to decline an internship last summer, so I could attend Field Training, which pretty much would have been a necessity for me to be competitive in my civilian career field (finance).

Anyway, I drive 4 hours to my Det a few days ago to officially contract. As my NCO is putting together all my paperwork for the enlistment, she realizes that MJ use over 5 times has to be waived by HQ, not the Det commander. So she sends up the packet, I wait around, and my commander makes some phone calls hoping to get it approved the same day, since I'm scheduled for PRK a couple days later, which I can only do after I contract. After waiting around for a couple hours, my commander finally gets a phone call saying that not only was I not getting the waiver approved the same day, but that these waivers are denied 100% of the time, and that I shouldn't have been allowed in the program in the first place. My commander tried explaining my situation to but basically got laughed at and told "tough luck".

    So, I'm being dissenrolled...

I hope I don't sound like I'm bitching or I'm some douchebag, because I'm not. I'm not even really angry, I'm just pretty much in shock and disbelief at the situation. Is this worth an appeal? If this doesn't work out, do I still have a shot at OTS/Guard/Reserve or will their policy just be the same (I'll try anyway)? Would appreciate comments or suggestions.

Pretty much the exact same thing happened to me, but two weeks before commissioning. I'm going to turn in an appeal, but I just want to appeal the "Definitely not recommended" box they checked on the separation form. I've talked talk to Navy, but they haven't got back to me a month later, so I think I'm probably DQ'd from fed jobs. Appeal it, but be ready to move on with your life.
