  1. Letter not necessary if your 1288 is filled out with your gaining unit info. Can't hurt to have one I'm sure, but completed 1288 seems to be the key in getting approved. Unless you're within a year or your AFSC/year group is showing an overage, your functional will not recommend, but I'd say you still have a pretty good shot. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. My ISR said that the 2nd endorsement would not be completed until I actually get approved. I do have the unit, base, and position number on that section of the 1288....

I'll try to get a hire letter to attach with it just in case.

  2. Anybody else out there denied for FY14 VSP and applying for standard Palace Chase? While I wait for SAF/PC to make a decision, I'm just curious of what my chances are.

    2005 11B

2 yrs ADSC remaining (UPT and GI Bill Xfer)

Already hired by a Reserve unit (did anyone attach a letter to their application?)

    SQ/WG recommend approval

  3. An 11B T-38 IP at Laughlin got VSP. Don't know year group.

Just talked to my 11B T-38 buddy at Laughlin who applied for VSP. He got an email that said approved, but then it said disapproved and ineligible for FY14 FM. Final disposition - Disapproved.

Still appears to be zero 11Bs approved for VSP with UPT ADSC (awaiting year group info for the Exec at Minot, I suppose). One 11B approved for PC.

  4. Dear AFPC,

Please consider adjusting your communication process. A weekly (sometimes) update that reads like a staff meeting powerpoint slide to your superiors (ie processed x of y applicants with z ineligible) shows that you check the box for "communication" and "timely updates," but it provides marginal utility to those who NEED the information only you can provide. Likewise, any time you take an action that raises questions (like approving a bazillion 11M applications on one day while not processing others), you should consider releasing a statement then.

For example on Monday afternoon send an email/Tweet/FB post/Pulse, "Due to the variations in final considerations of Force Management numbers from different components of Air Staff, AMC pilot applications are being processed first. We anticipate Air Staff approval/disapproval for 11X applications by ____day, and will notify those members as soon as ____day. Additionally, we have updated the FY14 voluntary matrix based off of the applicants already notified. It is attached/available on MyPers. This information is also being sent to your local FSS and commanders. If you have any specific questions regarding your year group/afsc status, please contact your commander who will have direct access to their equivalent here at AFPC. Thanks for your patience, and may the odds be ever in your favor."

  6. My spit-ball guess is that the number of applicants vs the number of bodies to be cut is way more. On the 11M side, we had a bunch of folks sitting in an airframe that's going away... thus making cutting with an axe much easier.

Sure, the ratio of applicants to overages could be higher in the bombers, but only if the published metrics are all wrong. For 05 11Bs, we were about 11% overage (7/62). However, I would argue we have a much lower application ratio compared to the 11Ms. From 3 of the 5 bomber bases, I only counted two applicants in my year group (again, I don't have all the numbers).

Just using Dyess as an example, we had 5 total bomber pilot VSP applications for 2+ squadrons. However, we had 40 applications from the two 130 squadrons. That may not translate exactly across the AF, but I don't think we are applying at a higher rate than 11Ms, and our overages are fairly similiar for most year groups.

I do agree that losing an airframe would also help, but then there's the Altus C-17 IP exodus (airframe not going away). Based on the numbers I've seen, I still can't understand the difference. Especially since NO bomber pilots with UPT ADSC have been approved yet...

Maybe we're just too good at CAS :)

  7. Mish_Hacker,

I haven't heard of any movement at Dyess on the C-130 or B-1 side. Have you?

Nothing for b1 or 130 as far as I know, though I'm not really tapped into the 130 numbers. All I heard was that 40 dudes in the 317th applied on Feb 6. Silence since then. If I hear anything I'll pass it on...

  8. Mish_Hacker, can't think of any 05 11B from KBAD that applied/made it this far. Don't know if airframe is being taken into account but I'm obviously talking B-52. Don't know if you're B-1/2/52.

jsanto1, I'm B-1. I know of one other '05 11B that applied (another Bone guy), but that's all I've heard. Thanks for the info.

Have any Buff guys been denied? Or have not many applied? If you're looking for any other 11B numbers from the Bone, let me know...

  9. I'm actually leaning more towards June 1st. Multiply 1.25 times the cumulative years in service, subtract DEROS, divide by the greatest ADSC, add to the deployment return date (but only if it is the third Saturday after a full moon--otherwise, ineligible), and finally multiply this by the number of FY14 deadlines met by AFPC. Add this equation to June 1, and I get June 1.

Actually, conditioning has just taught me that the only thing I know to be true is that NOTHING will happen when AFPC says it will.

  10. Fantastic article! Forward this to your families, friends, news organizations, congressmen, etc. it's time for a congressional investigation into this nonsense. Thank you TC for being a discernible voice among us.

It would be nice if we didn't have to go outside the service to address the concerns of those within it. Is this what our organization has become? Thousands of officers and enlisted troops can't get resolution or straight answers on a 5-month program until T.C. updates his blog? I really appreciate what he writes and the attention it brings to our situation; I'm just disappointed our organization is either incapable or unwilling to address this internally. Perhaps this feeling of isolation is why so many of us want out.

  11. You can take this for what it worth. My Sq/CC said today that he emailed the head of separations at AFPC last week inquiring about VSP notifications. What he was told, via email, was that they were taking the rest of last week to clear the queue whatever that means. He also said they stated that VSP notifications would start rolling out at the beginning of this week.

Seeing as how it was Wednesday he fired off another email today to get an update because in his words “Wednesday is not the beginning of the week”. He said he had received a reply stating that they had gotten through the queue and that VSP approvals would start being sent out tomorrow and they would continue through this weekend. Disapprovals would start being sent out at the beginning of next week.

Take it with a grain of salt, but my CC is a pretty straight shooter and I doubt he would potentially put this out there if he thought he was being fed a line of BS.

So, Thursday thru the weekend, minus the Fri-Sat "down for maintenance time"

  12. Also, Sq/CC got clarification on being eligible for involuntary programs after applying for voluntary. If your VSP application required ANY ADSC waiver then the stipulation doesn't apply and you are eligible for the RIF and require a RRF.

I'm really hoping that we know by the end of the week...but based on their performance thus far i'm not counting on it. Logic would tell you that there needs to be results for FY14 VSP before the FY15 VSP window opens.

"If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. If you like your healthcare plan, you can keep your healthcare plan. If you apply for a voluntary program and are denied, you will not be RIFd. Period."

Hopefully, your SQ/CC talked to someone at AFPC that is not the person in charge of setting FY14 Force Management deadlines. Or maybe hopefully they did, and their info is as good as an AFPC deadline. Lots of fun questions for Commander's Calls now...
