  1. Why is anyone under the impression that we're not continuing to strike targets in Afghanistan every day like we have for the past 19+ years?
I have zero information, but I would be shocked to hear that at least MQ-9s aren't overhead 24/7 like they have been.
That's not even counting the three-letter agencies and SOF on the ground that may or may not be there. (Again, I have zero information)

Maybe we are, but these drones aren’t based in Afghanistan, aren’t coming out of Iran, and probably not out of Pakistan (but wouldn’t know). So where are we launching these drones from? If I need to fly 8 hours to stay overhead for 4-5 hours to fly 8 hours back, is it really worth my time?

It seems a lot like we are back to pre-9/11 thinking where we want to close our eyes and believe that a problem half a world away can’t touch us, or that there isn’t any problem a few cruise missiles can’t fix.

Not to say I wanted to ever go back there, or send my friends or my children there. I just don’t see a drone war conducted from however far away being a legitimate long term strategy to be able to keep a terrorist organization and it’s friends from reaching out and touching us.

  2. I don’t think there is any thought of retaking anything. Sad as it is, we need the Taliban to keep the airport, whether it is Kabul or Bagram, secure as the last plane leaves. So far from what I’ve read they haven’t attacked us at the airport which makes sense because they don’t want us to come back.

  3. Who made the decision to close Bagram before we had every "soft target" out of the country?
THAT PERSON is responsible for ALL of this. THAT PERSON needs to be named.
I am actually ashamed at this point.

The Bobs thought the Afghans were going to defend our retreat. A task it appears they were not very interested in (can’t blame them when we broadcast that they were just fighting to lose, in 3 months or less). That would have allowed us to continue to slowly draw down to where only 1-2 plane loads of people would need to be flown out before Kabul falls (~87 days from now by best estimates)

  4. The first amendment doesn't protect one from consequences. You're welcome to put anything you'd like on your Facebook page, but there's nothing saying you won't face consequences from doing so.
I think the "government monitoring" ship sailed back with the passage of the Patriot Act (a misnomer if there ever was one).
To me the real questions is why people type out their beliefs on social media anyway. Literally zero people care that someone is against kids in cages or that someone thinks the Covid vaccine is dangerous.
Edited to add: the Venn diagram of people who propagate/believe the Big Lie and those who hold extremist views is nearly a circle, and they're rarely shy about showing it online, so that makes this an easier endeavor.

    So to recap:

    Opinion

“why does anyone put opinions on social media, no one cares what you think”

    Edited to add: More opinion.

    lolz

  5. Problem is now people like Greene and Gaetz.  They truly do not care they're destroying any vestige of what was the GOP. You watch, they will burn this mf'r down not realizing the damage they will do to the country.

Romney, Cheney, Kinzinger, et al are eating poo sandwiches because people are still pandering to the whipped up base of ignorant voters Trump duped.

Where in the 75 Million do we draw the line on who is ignorant, and who is not? 40/35? 70/5? 65/10? just curious... I’d also like to see the same analysis done on the “more educated” Liberal voters. There are ignorant people on both sides of the aisle (reference any of the numerous man on the street quizzes).

The Republican Party needs to figure it out though, because the numbers no matter what coalition they come up with: Trump/NeverTrump/Moderate etc might still not be enough to win a national election unless there is a severe decline in voter participation and 2020 was an anomaly.

  6. AD at Edwards and commuting about 85 miles from LA.

As a single dude it's well worth the trade off of having a 90 minute drive. What made life infinitely better was finding someone to carpool with at least part of the way.

I know my commute is too long if I have to remember to pee before Ieave the house.

Also, 90 mins each way is 15 hours a week = 60 hours a month/2.5 days a month = 30 days a year in the car driving to/from work! Obviously not counting days of leave/holidays/tdy/deployment, but you get my point.

  7. Your points were all fair, it just astonishes me how different people can interpret assignments. I personally didnt like Germany as much as Korea, but I know many people would find that backward. I've never met anyone that likes Cannon though.

People don’t like AFSOC’s self-proclaimed premier CONUS installation?????

It always drove me nuts when people at the regularly scheduled ‘fix the AF CGO forum’ complained about assignments of three years being too short. It was always people from real horrible locations like Hickam, or name your base in FL, Etc. I wanted nothing more than for them to eat their words and spend 5 years at Cannon.

  8. What is happening now in major cities across this country has nothing to do with racism or George Floyd anymore.

Anarchy and a hatred of certain aspects of America would be more accurate now.

Token caveat that I hate that I have to do: the cop who kneeled on George Floyd deserved to be arrested and charged with murder. That was wrong on all levels. But that cause has been destroyed now.

Cop(s) deserved to be investigated, and based upon ALL the facts (which none of us are privy to), arrested and charged or not arrested/charged. That’s how justice works.

There are multiple sides to every story, and right now all we have are partial video accounts. I’d certainly be interested in seeing all the body camera footage if it is ever released.

The unfortunate reality in today’s America is that any high profile cases will be tried in the media courtroom long before the accused ever sees his/her day in actual court. The rules don’t apply and you are not innocent until proven guilty.

Not saying the cop was in the right, just saying I’d prefer our justice system (though not perfect) over mob justice.

  9. The supplemental withholding rate (rate DFAS uses for bonus payments) was decreased from 25% to 22% by the IRS in 2018 as a result of the tax cuts. Your last check might have been at the higher rate depending on your anniversary date. Should be pretty easy to calculate.

So we won’t get that 3% back when we file our taxes next april? Sounds like we are getting ripped off!

  10. Growing up we had a family friend who flew P-38’s in WW2. He said the requirement when he signed up was 2 yrs of college to become a pilot. I understand at one point they also had enlisted “flight officer” pilots. I’m guessing requirements shifted as the needs increased. Why not try dropping the requirement to two years of college to get a commission before doing away with the requirement all together.

Other than money, and the few who really want to lead the paperwork war,... why would anyone want to become an officer? It’s my understanding that O’s who are pilots in the Army get stuck as paper pushers, while the WO’s are the combat leaders in the plane/helo. I think we have a few people on this forum that could speak to the validity/invalidity of that.

At the end of the day, this is just another way for the Air Force to fix the problem by not addressing the real problem.

  11. Does anyone else feel stabbed in the back by this?
Instead of fixing the problems that make people want to get out, he wants to make it harder for his pilots to get hired by the airlines?
What a low blow...or am I reading this wrong?

I tried googling this and couldn't find anything. Anyone have a source on this?

  12. IMHO this covers about 69% of what most people would ever need to know:

I also enjoyed Predictably Irrational by Professor Dan Ariely. I'm a big fan of behavioral economics vs rational economics...the former seems to explain the real world much better.

100% tracking until the last one...

Wasn't Social Security supposed to be the "Social Insurance" plan? Instead it turned into a piggy bank and a government run retirement plan (Ponzi scheme)

As Reagan said... "The more the plans fail, the more the planners plan."

Everything else was very sound advice.

I've noticed the SNCO's push the TSP on our younger airmen now. However, when I ask them what they invested it in they have no idea. I think un-allocated funds go into the G-fund until you tell them where to go... one step at a time.

  13. Force shaped = no money

No money? I'm starting to wish I hadn't put all that stuff about my desire to be force shaped in my ADP.

I do think we would keep commissary and health benefits for 180 days though, which is great, but if I am working at wal mart, why would I drive all the way over to base to use the commissary.

I think it's so I can get cheaper condoms to use after the AF shows me the door and tells me to go f--- myself.

  14. They want to cut 1900 Enlisted Aviators (per Air Staff). I think a majority of those will be FE's.

I was getting the feeling that someone higher was going to "lean forward" on this one and we're going to lose a lot more than the 1900 fy14 total active force reduction the math was indicating. The longer they drag this out, the more times they are going to have to review each person's file= more wasted time (not that big blue really cares about that). A reduction of 1900 this year leaves an extra 3100 to spread out over the next 4 years ( figuring a 5k per year average reduction). The 14 odd programs also makes me think they plan on front end loading this in the first few years, then fixing what they've screwed up in the last few.

But what do I know? I just work here.
