  1. If you're at the Pentagon, I'd buy a big ass boat (lots of great ones for sale right now) and moor it for next to nothing in the Pentagon Marina. 8-10 years ago a slip at the marina was dirt cheap with unlimited water and electric.

Edit: I did a check on the Columbia Island Marina on the Pentagon Lagoon and while it's not next to nothing ($5k/yr for a 35' boat) it does have unlimited water and electric and I believe the rates for AD military are much lower, but I could be wrong. (It's happened before)

  2. Man oh man, could I tell some stories from the 80s in SAC and MAC when we had full up orderly rooms that did it all for you.

No there weren't finance specialists in the squadron; they were actually at Finance, where you filled out your voucher at the Travel Pay counter, sat down, read half a magazine article and then walked back to the counter when your name was called to be paid your voucher claim in CA$H.

It happened, not that long ago (relatively speaking).........

......<wait>, oh was I dreaming?? Wake up, grandpa, time for your meds.....

  3. While I agree with all of the "airmanship falling to the wayside" comments, I seriously doubt working on a Master's degree or performing additional duties contributed to this particular incident. Landing at the right airport falls into the putting the gear down or making sure the wings are attached before you take off category - either you do it or you don't. No training required, really. The SIB will probably be a human factors bonanza, but I'd be surprised if a lack of training/proficiency was causal here.

Look, I've spent a long career (that will end at O-5) instructing, mentoring and sometimes defending my "guys". Lord knows I've made a ton of mistakes and bad decisions and luckily I've never hurt myself or anyone else, in part because someone took the time to instruct, mentor and sometimes defend me.

You can blame this incident on whatever or whomever you feel you need to blame it on, but at the end of the day, it was caused by complacency and buffonery.

    Nothing more, nothing less.

Hopefully, we will ALL learn from it and this particular crew will survive and live to fly another day.

  4. Non-towered airports don't issue landing clearances.

    Exactly.

I wonder if KMCF tower (or any tower) cleared them to land.

Edit: Because they should have expected a clearance to land at a controlled airport, an AFB no less.

  5. I'm not talking about the obvious stakeholders.

There were decades when no one in the USAF outside the A-10 community wanted to even get a whiff of CAS on them. That's what I'm talking about.

Got it. I remember the IPs in UPT trying to talk guys out of the A-10. We had a guy in my class devastated that he got a Hawg and not a Viper.

    Just agreeing that it's cool.

  6. They (senior leadership) just don't get it.

Ours was on Friday, started at 0800 and ended at 1630 and then the base went straight into ATSO training until about 1830.

    This.

I'd like to punch the shoe in the face that convinced the old man to tack two hours of ATSO to mandatory suicide briefings.

We've had suicide standown days before. The best briefing I ever saw was my old CC having the exec thumb through the slides like he was taking the Info Security CBT and then shut off the screen. He looked at each one of us as he said (paraphrased):

"The reason I don't want any of you to commit suicide is because I care about each and every one of you and your families and I want you to realize the wake of despair you would leave if you took your own life. If you feel like you want to harm yourself, talk to someone, anyone, call me if you want, anytime day or night. Now go home to your families. If you don't have a family, start one." :salut:

    Good guy. That's leadership.

  7. As a female , I take exception to the sexually suggestive mini-movies that some member users are using on this forum- especially the "boob" ones! Why are these allowed?; I bet if I had a guy doing similar things with his private area on mine, it would be taken off...? Sure, some will say, if you don't like it don't participate in this forum. It's not just for horny guys is it???

Can you make me a sandwich?

  8. Damn, she's good. I have no doubt what Tom C. says is true, but as articulate and credible as he is, she turns it around and makes him look like a bitter, chauvinistic old fart to the uneducated listener. If you listen closely to what she says, she states that she 'excelled in training' (FTU), 'met standards', and 'passed a checkride given to her by her SQ/CC'. All technically correct, verifiable and cleverly spun.

All of us old guys who have spent half our lives in a flying squadron know the type of person MM is (or is purported to be), but these types of people, male and female, are political masters of spin. The everyday, non-pilot citizen can't follow what Tom was saying on the radio but those of us that have spent a career dealing with people like MM can. I've seen it several times in my career (maybe not to that extreme, with GOs and members of Congress calling the scheduler to check on her) and I could see myself in that exact situation Tom found himself in, with the same results.

I suppose the only thing you can do is not vote for her. I will say she has what it takes to have a long career as a politician.

  9. I don't have to say anything about her, any of you who don't already know her just have to look at and listen to her.

She said she wants to kick Rick Santorum in the jimmy. She thinks that's appropriate language for someone who will make important decisions for her constituents. Are you kidding me?

How do you think people would react if Santorum responded by saying he wanted to kick her in the whatever she has for genitals?

She is an embarrassment and brings shame on the military.

    2.

    Wow. Just ######ing wow.

  10. One (1) solitary lone soldier year old Miller Lite at the bottom of my ski boat's cooler. Found it after a three hour boat ride under an 18 pack of kid's juice boxes, some 6 oz Walmart cokes and two big bags of ice. Was so cold it burnt my hand.
