AMC is finally focused on the mission instead of 1206s.

As an exec right now, it’s more do all of this AND maintain “administrative excellence.”    If that means crush an MPC and then come back to the office for bullet wizardry, then so be it.

Any C-17 pilots out of Charleston on here? How’s the mission/family life?

The mission is in flux.  We are shifting to be relevant in the Pacific, and our training is modulating to accommodate, but the Bobs still needs their crap moved.  Everybody wants their piece of airlift, and the crews are left whiplashed between planning some high end near peer exercise one day, and then flying the garbage runs on their 6 month deployment to the Died the next.   Both can be great or sucky in their different ways.

Family life is #airforceanswer ...it depends.  We have three different crew qualification levels here between Airland, Airdrop, and SOLL II - and as you move to the right on this spectrum the home life tends to get better IMO,  but you pay your dues in upgrades and trips to the FTU.   Send me a DM if you are looking for more specifics.

It’s not just fighter guys, it’s the rest of the Air Force flying community that understands MAF is a laughing stock because of attitudes exhibited in your post.  Look, no offense, I’m sure you’re a great dude and pilot but we will never advance as a community if we don’t be honest brokers and push back against some of the queep in place of real training and readiness.  If you are nearing retirement, I can understand it is not your battle anymore and thanks for your service. To the young guys, it’s not okay to just be box checkers, build airline hours and roll over and say “well nothing I can do about it.”  What are you doing within your shop, organization, unit etc to make us more effective as a MAF and by extension the shooters more lethal?

As much as I don’t want to underestimate the power of a ambitious captain to “accelerate change.”  What we really need is the MAF to get on board to give us the tools to actually participate in the high end fight.   You know what the next C-17 block adds to the jet?  Better VNAV to help comply with STARs, a HUD whose primary addition is to make those ILSs even easier, a software improvement to eek out a little more efficiency in the autothrottles.   You know what it doesn’t have? the ability to build a threat ring on the glass with less than 36 keystrokes, the ability to display the jets bullseye location without mental gymnastics.  RWR? Pleaze.  Any datalink? Forget about it. So I have to tell our enterprising young copilots that training to fight near peer adversary means improving techniques to mark up their crappy bullseye chart.  I can understand why some get skeptical and want to primarily train in the jets core competency that AMC actually invests in.

  4. I think it’s starting to happen earlier in the first ops assignment than we’d like to admit, at least among my peers.  We see that most older guys are set on getting out and naturally less involved in the squadron than they would be otherwise.  This pushes more work/burnout on the younger guys which only exacerbates the issue.  I would estimate that 60-75% of the JrCGOs are planning on the airlines at the end of their commitment, given a similar hiring environment.

Strictly my opinion, but if you FAIP with the intention of being marketable to airline...fvck you.

I didn’t put FAIP high and I’m glad I didn’t get it, but I think anyone who gives 10 good years to the Cause is one of the good guys even if he isn’t a spec ops fighter pilot.  All of us choose our assignments on differing criteria, and  being good officer/pilot/powepoint god while maitaining a cognizance of outside opportunities are surely not mutually exclusive.  But then again, as an FNG, my millennial might be showing.

  6. 1806 at CBM definitely has MQ1 and RQ4 on its dream sheet on the T1 side (along with a B52).  Only saw the list in passing, so maybe there is a deeper story but it wouldn't surprise me for AFPC to say one thing and do another or for someone to get inexplicably screwed due to poor timing.

  8. Never heard from the 190FS like you guys did, and am still a bit confused about all that since the recruiter over there said they weren't reviewing them until April. But whatever, I just decided to wait it out.

Those are the only two I've applied to, sending my stuff to the 173rd soon, and will be sending to the 154th as well.

I never heard back from the 190th at all either. Glad I am not the only one. Congrats on the selection for an interview!
