WRT timeline, I had 10 months between my FC1 and OTS. 9 months from AFRC board OK to OTS. Once you in process in person with the 340th, you should be close.
If you’ve been picked up by a 135 unit, you’ll fly the T1. The only way guard/reserve go 38s is if they’re going to a fighter unit. Especially reserves, they have very very limited 38 allocation.

So I've been trying to figure out my pay during OTS, UPT, and as a traditional reservist. Forgive me if some of these questions sound dumb, coming from the civ word and still figuring out the mil pay structure. Wondering If any one still in UPT, or just finished could give me an idea to some of the questions below.
My civ employer offer's differential pay for long term and short term deployments. They consider anything under 30 days short term and over 30 days extended. They only pay dif pay for 12 months of any extended deployment. Question: Will OTS and UPT be separate orders? Or will I be considered "deployed" from day 1 of OTS until I become a traditional reservist? To take advantage of this benefit I need to submit a LES, is that the mil version of a monthly pay statement?
Also what is pay like throughout UPT? I've looked at the pay charts and know basic pay for a O-1 is roughly 36k a year. But what else it included, like Basic Allowance for Subsistence? or Aviation Career Incentive Pay?
Whats pay like for a fresh Lt after a 2 week TDY? For the dif pay stated above, they only allow 30 days of short term deployment dif pay in any calendar year. I suspect (or at least hope) I will be flying more than 30 days a year, so i'm trying to figure out if a 2 week TDY is comparable to half a months salary for me.
Thanks in advance for any input from the guys that have recently done this. I'm just trying to get ahead of what the situation financially will be before i step into training and start going full speed.
I see most of your questions addressed above, I think I can add a couple notes:
- As a Reservist, you'll funnel through the 340th. They'll do their best to keep you on orders continuously from the start of OTS to finishing B-course & SERE. I'd say not to plan to PCS or otherwise return home (holidays notwithstanding) till all of that is over. This is different than how it used to be and different from how the Guard does things.
- Remember entitlements are non-taxable (BAH, BAS, and flight pay). You won't get BAS at OTS. OTS you'll be paid as an E5. Your O1 pay starts after.
- I'm also a reservist and my company also does some differential pay. LES is all that was needed. YMMV

I'm going Reserve, off the street.
Interview Jan 2017
Hired Jan 2017
FC1 Feb 2017
FC1 approved March 2017
Package submitted to board April 2017 (Meets end of May, Awaiting approval)
The most recent timelines I've seen on here are mostly Guard, can anyone going reserve fill me in on their timeline after the board approves the package? My recruiter is saying the timeline he's been seeing lately is:
Board approval approx 30 days from meeting
Swear in approx a week after approval
OTS approx 30-60 days after swearing in
And says they are going from OTS to UPT without much time in between. (i'm IFT exempt)
His timeline seems pretty optimistic compared to what I've seen on here. What do you guys think?
It's hard to say, the timing will depend on several factors beyond your control. Mine was about a month from AFRC board passage to swearing in, then another 8 months till OTS. What I can say is that once you've gotten rolling (OTS), the reserves will do their best to stack you back to back with as little time in between as possible. I had about a week from OTS to UPT show date. You have to strike the balance between being patient and being ready to go on fairly short notice.

Thanks for the info! I'm happy as long as I can go home for a few days!

I know AETC goes on exodus over Christmas (10 duty days). What's the word on how that works for new studs who are pre-solo/pre-flight line? I start in one of the Nov classes. Will we be allowed to take leave and head home for exodus?
Thanks!

I don't mean to hijack but I have a question that may relate:
I'm Reserve and my wife will be staying in place for school while I'm in UPT. Everything I've heard to this point is I'll be in the dorms since I'm unaccompanied. Does anyone have details on dorm rules/regs? Will I be able to stay off-base in a hotel when she visits? I know she can't stay with me. OP may be interested also.

Just a word of caution, if you get an interview there is a good chance they will ask why you didn't attend the social. Good luck but just be prepared for a question like that. Source: It has happened to me.
This. If you want to join a unit, you need to do the leg work and make the necessary tradeoffs/sacrifices.

Currently I am a senior in high school looking at partcipating in NROTC or AFROTC in college. I have little to no doubt that I would get a GPA of 3.8 or higher in college as well as have stellar particpation in extracurriculars and perhaps a leadership position in ROTC. My only doubts lie in my vision problem. One of my eyes has 20/15 vision, with a refractive error of 0.00 diopters, while the other, is 20/400 with a refractive error of -4.00 diopters. As such, I have a rather unique vision situation and only wear one contact lens or a monocle when I need to correct my vision, which when corrected is 20/15 in my left eye and 20/20 in my right eye. I have spoken with my optomologist and he has said LASIK would likely be a successful option for me. Being a AF or Navy pilot is a dream to me that I do not want spoiled Junior year in college after I've already committed and then been told I can't pilot. What are my options? Should I get LASIK the summer before college or the during Freshman or Sophomore year? (i.e., what are your suggestions/routes you have taken that have led to success?)
You've got time to get this worked out. The delay after getting LASIK to being OK to take a flight physical is 1 year. You're years away from that point.
HOWEVER - before going down the LASIK path you need to make sure that you're compliant with the pre-op limitations. I'm not a doctor but the -3 diopters of astigmatism may be at play here. PDF below. There are others on this board who can answer questions regarding waiverability if you exceed the limits, I don't know.

The new process for Reserves, per the 340th, is that you'll PCS to UPT directly after OTS (with 6 days of leave in between). Then you'll be at your UPT base until your class starts. That's the best/most recent info I've been given to date.

I'll be sure to to inform the staff of what I will be needing. Just a few more questions.
1) What was your vision prior to the surgery? (Curious on how much of correction was needed)
2) Any complications? (I.e. Haze, halos, night problems)
3) Were you already flying before the correction or after?
Thank you.
1 - R20/200 L20/300
2 - No
3 - did LASIK a month after I passed my PPL checkride

Precise and direct to the point. I like it. Thank you. Any thing else I should take into consideration before proceeding with the correction?
Give a heads up to your surgeon's support staff. Get a copy of the checklist included in your file. Let them know you'll be coming in for more follow-up visits than they likely do normally. I got lucky, mine were totally cool about it and I didn't pay anything for the extra visits, they just did it and filled out the checklist. Speaking of which, make sure you get copies and do your homework on making sure it's filled out.
As far as type of surgery goes, I did Wavefront LASIK which from everything I've seen is the best option right now (doesn't mean it's especially expensive). I'm happy to answer other questions if you have them. I had an excellent experience and am 20/20 or better 2 years on.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for the most up to date regulations on PRK/LASIK surgery? I'm about a year out for applying for units and my left eye has apparently surpassed the maximum myopia error (-3.00 is the max and I registered at -3.25) at my eye appointment today. I want to get the ball rolling for surgery, but don't want to jump the gun until I know every detail.
Also, I would get the surgery done in north Texas and any suggestions for the area would be great. Thank you.

This is excellent financial advice, after UPT you can use your flight pay to cover the divorce.
does alimony count as a dependent?

You'll get BAH regardless on or off base. But if you're on base, they take all your BAH for "rent," which is why ARI said you won't get BAH. Get some roommates and live off base and pocket some $.
BAS is intended as food $, but it just lumps into your total.

This helps - thanks!

I've found my way to the '15 military pay tables, figure '16 won't be much different. The basic pay is straightforward but how do the allowances work? If I'm single/no dependent do I only get BAH if I manage to get off-base housing in UPT? What's the subsistence allowance? Finally, does all this get taxed normally or are some parts exempt?
Thanks!

part of me thinks that tracking down hiring contact info for units, the difficult to get ones in particular (NOLA), is an integral part of the experience.
Yep. It's also clearly part of the way squadrons manage their pipeline. I think it will be difficult to get permission to post POCs for lots of places. I've specifically been told if I post an email/phone # online, I'll make the insta-shit list. Everyone is different though.
-
Thanks. Hiring officer contacted me. Going to Wright Pat soon so will get dates after that (assuming I get approved).
Congrats! That's a very quick response. Nordo on my end so far, wasn't expecting anything until ~2 weeks from now.
-
Hey! I don't have dates yet but my squadron confirmed that 4ish months is the typical, but anything from 3-6 is the typical. I've been told that things are erring more towards sooner rather than later at the moment.
Roger that, thanks! AFRC response should be soon, hopefully.

Just got some dates. Seems like they are trying to get stuff going quicker.
Hire: April 2015
Swear in: June 2015
FC1: July 2015
TFOT: January 2016
Del Rio: April 2016
No waivers. No Prior Service.
you going ANG or Reserve?
-
What is currently a ballpark timeline from getting approved by AFRC to going to OTS? From what I heard in the past it was at least a year but now word on the street is that its 3 to 6 months? Anybody know?
Bump. You hear anything? 3-6 mos is what I have in my head but don't have much info to go on, that's more of a guess.

They converted older Form S scores to the new Form T. My pilot went up, Nav went down... Who the hell knows what sort of algorithm they used. http://access.afpc.af.mil/pcsmdmz/faq2_0.html#ONE
That's the weird part, I took form T and my scores still changed... Odd.
-
Did AFOQT scoring recently change? I went through and re-checked on the website and my scores are definitely different than they used to be... e.g. my Nav went from 88 to 97.
-
Since you asked twice, I'll take a stab.
They want to know you and why you did the things you've done. Example: "I finished college in 3.5 years" = Something you've done. "I finished college in 3.5 years because I wanted to save money, I enjoyed the challenge, and I was hoping to get deployed/hired sooner" = Says something about YOU and your work ethic and values.
Question that comes to mind is when they say "Tell me about yourself." They don't want ONLY want to hear about where you grew up, where you went to school, what jobs you've had, etc. Your resume tells them that, and they've already read that. They want to know what makes you you. What do you like to do, what are your strengths, what are your weaknesses, what bugs you, what motivates you, and so on. Sure what you do reflects on who you are, but it's not the whole story.This. Don't give info alone, give context. At least for me, I gave a history of my wanting to fly and everything I've done to get to the interview. Were most of those steps the same as everyone else? Sure. Did my circumstances (LASIK, time to completion, working full time while going after it, etc.) give me some unique story? Yep. Pick the point of the story - showed dedication, persevered through XYZ, etc. and then fill in the blanks.
I wrote my cover letter this way and more or less walked through it in the "tell us about yourself" part of the interview. Also show that you've thought it through and have plans (e.g. what will you do for civilian work if you're ANG/AFR) so they get that you're full-concept ready to rock.
I need some advice

If you go, go Guard/Reserve. We come from similar backgrounds and it has been incredible so far. Certainly stressful and full of bureaucratic crap but that’s same thing different day from civilian work.
